Does zero-calorie/zero-sugar kind of food products can help you lose weight?

I believe it was 2 years ago when these two giant softdrink company released their zero-sugar and no-calorie soda drinks...since then, I never bought a single "regular" softdrink or soda, either in can or bottle. I always choose the zero-sugar/zero-calorie sodas. Then, it was just a month ago that I totally stopped drinking any softdrink products because, I wanted to lose some weight. After reading an information about zero-sugar products, I learnt that they contain "aspartame" like most artificial sugar products has...which can cause obesity and other side effects. It's most likely their substitute to "sugar" but, in the end may cause you unwanted health results.
Do you believe in products such as that?(zero-sugar/zero-calorie) Or would you go and try products that doesn't have any artificial sugars in it?
Happy mylotting!

neither, both are bad for your health no matter how low in fat or sugar.
I like to drink unsweetened tea =]
drinking unsweetened tea is actually recommended more than drinking water alone.
sodas do not only contain high sugars, but high sodium also.
sodium (salt) is the number one unknown cause for high blood pressure.
I won't go in depth, but basically, salt expands inside your arteries.
the more salt you consume, the higher your pressure goes. this is not instantaneous
but with a lot of salt consumption comes bad side effects.
high blood pressure causes many other problems, and so on, the combination of salts and sugars, plus the syrups and carbon dioxide, make soda very bad for you.
it wont necessarily kill you, but it will make you worse off.
to digress, cut soda completely.
after you stop drinking soda your body will slowly fix itself, you won't feel the difference because the change is slow.
but when you start again, you will feel it.
try this, substitute soda for something like juice or tea, sweetened or not.
do this for about 3 to 4 weeks, then start drinking soda the way you used to.
you can FEEL how bad it is for you =]

Awesome input! You are right, soda has sodium but I never thought about the effect it has on our blood pressure. Oh!! I like drinking tea, so I'm happy to hear about that. Though tea is quite bitter..haha! Anyway, I have stopped drinking sodas and I hope I can continue doing it. Water and natural drinks such as tea, fresh fruit juices are way better than sodas.

i don't believe products that claim that it has zero/no sugar/calorie they are not telling the truth i prefer product that has less sugar/calorie...oh by the way long exposure in 'aspartame' has seemingly endless side effects like brain tumor, headaches, vision los and other neurological problems, abdominal pain, anxiety attacks, arthiris, asthma, burning urination, hair loss, hear palpitations and many more..

you are definitely right Bart! i'd rather choose products that has sugar in it than getting zero-sugar/calorie type of food. Oh yes, aspartame is so dangerous to our health, you have define most of its side effects.nice!

hi,
It is really serious problem that if any product does nt contain what it exact has to or what it states. Most of us believe that zero sugar do not contain sugar at all and take it frequently with an intention that we can control our calories. I do believed like that until i didnt read ur post but now after knowing that i definetely will nt use.

I don't know if can help us to lose weight I heard that too that it is very bad for our health too. The best way to lose weigth is to avoid drinking softdrinks instead drink more water. I don't believe that it is sugar free because it is still contains sugar.

Oh yeah! I thought by consuming zero-sugar/calorie food I will be more healthy and I will avoid getting unnecessary calories that will make me fat. But in the end these products can actually cause some health problems.

It might help you loose some weight. But I think it will be more effective if you burn some of the piled up fats before you started your diet on non fat foods and sugra free foods.

I see. Well they say that it has artificial sugar/sweeteners with it. To lose pounds in an instant is what I call surgically removed fats. And yet you still need to exercise and pound those unwanted skin off. "THAT IS IF SOMEONE CAN". Most of the time when you undergo liposuction you will also undergo skin removal surgery. \
In short the easy way to rid off fats is the longer way. WHY? Because you have to earn lots to lose lots this way ahahahaha

hi boyet! Yes it still better to exercise and at least loose some weight before starting to take those fat free food. But with sodas/colas, it is said that it isn't good to choose it, over a regular drinks or products that has natural sugars in it. Because it will make you more fat.

Zero calorie diet foods are just easy fixes, that usually don't work out in the long term sadly :( Plus aspartame can give you cancer among other health risks. I just stick to foods that are healthy and that aren't empty calories. Like vegetable, whole grains, fruits, etc. Eat healthy and you won't have to worry about the chemicals or gaining the pounds!

well these food can surely help a person to get on a diet and prevent getting weighed. but for being thin enough, tough exercise is needed and its not easy enough for any person or by taking these sugar less food.

i dont really believe that those non zero products can help lose weight but rather add more to health problems due to its chemical preservatives. it has always been a marketing strategy for these companies to help boost their sales. i'd still go to healthy options like balance diet such as eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercise to lose weight. happy mylotting

hi drake,
Yes, same here. I sometimes think that zero-calorie products has more chemical components that may cause harmful effects on our health. Maybe it is their strategy to boost up sales, you may be right there'. Happy Lotting too!

In my opinion, these things are good in moderation. I really think that too much is just REALLY bad for you; almost worse than excess "normal" sugar. I've heard that aspartame, the main ingredient in fake sweetners, is REALLY bad for your metabolism - and also causes you to crave carbs. Maybe that's why all of these "diet" products don't actually end up helping us lose weight. In my opinion, I think weight loss is ultimately up to portion control. Eating the same foods (although obviously more naturally-occuring things like fruits & veggies & grains), but limiting portions to a reasonable amount.

I believe if you want to lose weight all you have to do is watch what you eat, when you eat and exercise. I love Splenda and I do use it in my coffee and tea but as far as soda goes, they say some of the diet/no calorie are no better for you than the regular, they say they can actually be worse. I've been trying to get healthier and more in shape than I am and I just watch what I eat and try not too have too much sugar or bad foods and exercise, it's the more sensible thing to do. I prefer water when it comes to drinks considering it has no sugar, no calories, is great for you and it quenches my thirst more than anything else.

hi sashports,
Good for you! I always want to lose some weight and it sometimes tricky what is best food to consume and which are not good. Water indeed is the best drink and we can't substitute it with anything.

I also prefer drinking sodas stating "no-sugar" or "zero-calorie". But learning from your discussion about "aspartame", well I don't feel drinking anymore any kind of sodas. I am glad that you were able to open this topic. Always go for Health wise.

hi there,
Oh yeah...I too got informed recently about the bad effects of consuming products that are zero-calorie specifically sodas. Some of them used an artificial substitute for sugar (for us not to consume the calories that sugar has) but in the end may cause more serious problem.

I have a friend that once was working for a famous brand of soda and I asked him the very same question.
What he made clear to me is that, by the time there is really no lot of sugar in such drinks, they have to somehow keep the same or as same as possible, flavor.
What they do is to substitute sugar with other sugar-flavor ingredients which in fact are MORE unhealthy and ADD MORE weight than poor sugar.
Other than that, some of the side effects of these ingredients are REALLY bad for our health and give us: insomnia(!), headaches(!), growth of hair in funny places(!!!) etc.

lols...that's scary.."growth of hair in funny places"..hahaha! I don't wanna get those. hihi! Kidding aside, it still better to choose real sugar over processed no-sugar-flavored zero-calorie beverages.

These calorie-free sweeteners come in different names that can be confusing to us consumers. I have stopped taking these sugarfree stuff - drinks and candies since I learnt about their many negative associations with health problems. You may be interested to refer to this article on these artificial sugar substitutes: http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/sugarfree.html

good gosh please everyone STAY away from artificial sweeteners,,they are worse for you than sugar itself...look into STEVIA..its a natural sweetener you can find at a health food store from a plant and it lasts forever!! you only need 1-3 drops per drink...

I am always on some kind of diet. I don't drink many soft drinks as I was told to stay away from caffine. When I do drink them I try and drink the no calorie kind. Artificial sweetners aren't good in your diet at all. I drink a lot of water instead of soft drinks. I don't know if they help you lose weight or not. Some people make up for the calories in other ways and eat more because their drink has no calories. I guess the best way to lose weight is still to do more exercise than the calories you take in.
