Has Christmas lost it's true meaning?

Well its about that time again where we put all the effort into going to almost every store to get the lowest prices for things on sale. The time where we run up our credit card bill not thinking of the after effects for next month, yup its the holidays. The holidays have changed so much in the past years. People just spend without thinking and place all their efforts into moments that really don't last. Most people have forgotten the true meaning of christmas and the holidays. They just think its that time of the year when everything is cheap and they get time of to rest. What about the times when have a family reunion and tell them how much we miss them? and the time when people use to put out effort to give to the needy? we as people have really lost the true meaning of Christmas and the holidays don't you think so?

I don't think its just Christmas that's lost its meaning. I think most of life is losing its meaning- in this day and age everyone is so caught up with making money and buying things. We're forgetting how to make real connections with the people we come across. :/

yes i agree but Christmas is apart of life and therefore we have lost out on it. We have totally forgotten where we are coming from and how much we care about people.

Hey dude , what you have discussed up there sure sounds like the white man's version of Christmas , In Africa people go hungry over Christmas , not only on the 25th but throughout the season as a continuing trend of food shortage for the whole year. It's not all over the world where people get to spend and buy things , most of the people on this planet are usually struggling to get by at this time of the year (Given Africa as an example). Perhaps Christams has lost meaning in the west and more developed countries but for the meek and less fortunate , Christams is the only time of the year they can get a break here , people are usually very charitable here during this season. :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Not only Christmas but all festivals all over the world have lost their meaning and have become atificial and devoid of meaning.Nowadays such festivals have become commercial andpeople go on money spending sprees and are completely conned by shopkeepers who throw big discount sales while people rush to them even though they know that the prices have been raised and then discounted without the shopkeepers losing any profit. The real spirit of Christmas comes when you help the poor and needy and those who can`t have a proper dinner everyday of their lives. Helping those who are sick and the maimed selflessly and seeing to their welfare shows the real spirit of Christmas rather than setting up a Christmas tree and buying expensive gifts and throwing parties where drinks and food flows like water.

That is exactly what i am talking about my friend and how i feel. All festivals have lost their meaning. We as a people no longer help the less fortunate, all we do is party like their is no tomorrow. We need to make a big change and bring back the real meaning of christmas

I don't think so. Christmas is about giving and a lot of people do that. Above all christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ who came to save mankind. That we should not forget

i think my friend that we do less giving and more wanting in Christmas time, u may not agree but its a fact, there are less people spending time thinking about Jesus and more time partying.

yup like when u turn on the television as early as November there are commercials about early Christmas sales i mean come on they need to do better and stop using the birth of Jesus as a way to make more sales.

Yes, i do agree. Most of the time, we just spend our money buying for the ones which satisfied our lust but not our needs. For me, christmas means spending much time with our family and also giving ourselves a break for a year of working.

exactly most people think its about financial gain and not about anything spiritual. we need to make changes in our lives and start giving back, doing more charity and spend more time with our families.

Hi Andre, I agree with you that we tend to spend more during Christmas and yes, most of the time our savings and credit cards get most of the beatings. But I still believe that the true meaning of Christmas hasn't been lost, or gone. Christmas is about the birth of the child Jesus, and for Christians this is big as he will redeem the world later in his life. The spirit of Christmas is giving, sharing, forgiveness and love, and I want this thing to be remembered by my kids even after the holidays.

totally I agree with you ,the festival seem to has turned out to be a promotion way for the business man to sell their products ~ people has seldom mentioned it's original meaning .

Christmas unfortunately has become very much about materialism. It's sad as what it really meant was spending time together with your family and loved ones, and it had a religious meaning too, for those who are religious. Now it seems the only thing that's important about Christmas is getting everything you want on your list. The holidays are supposed to be a time of happiness and love, and instead it's turned into a huge stressful thing where you have to go and spend mass amounts of money on people or else you feel guilty. I think kids should be raised to know the real meaning of Christmas, and that it's not just about Santa Clause and presents.

I dont think that Christmas has lost its meaning. It depends on how YOU make your Christmas, not how other make it. Why do you care what other people do or how they celebrate? I celebrate the same way every year and I enjoy it to the fullest every year. But I enjoy every other important ocasion I have. Holidays ARE what you make them.

I don't think that Christmas has lost all of it's meaning. In my opinion, not from a religious stance, Christmas is about getting together with family and pretty much appreciating each other. If you're asking if we have gone overboard with all of the shopping and gifts, then yes I would definitely agree. But with my family we all still get together and give presents, but we puts caps of like $20 on the presents so we don't get crazy with all of the Christmas shopping.
