My point is this:
Every day we hear about countries try to reach a stage where they can develop nuclear weapons to safeguard themselves!
But who is going to tell them that it will kill people and everything else around them. This discussion is for those who have a concern for people around the world!
Please feel free to write in your points!

I share your point of view that why should we spend billions of dollars for things that are just perceived to be threats, never to be actually used? It would have done a world of good had we used those funds to address issues like global warming and alternative energy sources, which would really help people around the world. Just building an arsenal so that it helps some people make a lot of cash and others fearful is a total waste of time, money, energy everything.

Nuclear weapons scare me! I really don't like it that there are people out there with the power to wipe out whole countries! I think that they are unnecessary, but it has become a case of 'if they have one, we need one too'. I don't think that all the countries are going to agree to disarm their nuclear powers, as all countries want to have more fire power than the others as it makes them feel more powerful. There is also a lot of distrust between some countries and some people think that countries such as Iraq may be hiding nuclear weapons, so they are not prepared to take the word of other countries saying that they have no nuclear weapons. In an ideal situation, I would like to see all nuclear weapons safely destroyed, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime, unfortunately.

Many country that can afford to do this is trying to tell that they are a nation to contend with. Having that capability means that you can easily destroy a nation that would threaten them. I think having that capability would mean that country will think twice attacking or messing up with you.
Although I really think that without greed around there would be no need for this weapons around. If only people would learn to be tolerant of each other and respect each others space then weapons is not necessary anymore. But, since greed is still existing in our world then we tend to fend for ourselves to ensure our existence in this world of ours.

Hi Bionicman: that's a funny answer. I actually think that if alliens exists they will think we are a stupid civilization that destroy themselves and that it's not able to stop its own wars. Sounds like we have a lot of problems on earth. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

My dear friend! if you are smart enough to think that aliens exist, then you should also be that smart to guess whether or not they have a better thing than nuclear weapons with them. They surely do not have to worry about our nuclear power! Do they?

If every country treat with other countries equally, there is no need to have any weapon. But this will never happen.Back from our history,we can see that some strong country always like invading other poor country. In my opinion,Developing nuclear weapon is not good for human life and our environment, but some poor countries have to develop their nuclear weapon in order to safeguard their country and also can get a equal dialog right with the developed country in the world.

the thing with having nuclear weapons is they are a weapon one doesn't actualy have to use. Just having them is deterent enough. Think about it, In alk the time they have been in existence, only two have ever been used and that was almost 65 years ago. whatr scares me is the thought of one falling in to the hands of someone who WILL use them, not a nation, but an individual nut with no reguard to the longer term remifications of doing so.

I think most usually countries do it for their own safe guard to keep the numbers of threats down from other countries. Not that they'll necessarily use the weapons, but to let everyone know that they do have a defense system up and ready "just in case"

Yes I agree with you ,nuclear weapons are destructive to not only people but all forrms of life around them.Consequently it makes no sense to have safe borders but everyting including food supplies are destroyed and no one outside to interact with and sell your products.I think instead of nuclear wepons to protect your borders simple principles like love of neighbour ,doing unto others ,respect ,that are found in the bible may help to prevent conflicts

If every human loves each other, there won't be a need to have any weapon. Reality is, that doesn't happen. As time goes on, more lethal weapons will be developed because these countries want to dominate the world, and want to show the world that they're great. Nuclear technology should be used to support life better, but instead, it has been highly abused by the people who have personal interests. The result is, nuclear weapons. These people have no conscience - they claim that they're protecting their country -but it could well be something else.
The nuclear threat will never end as more countries from Asia to the Middle East join in to build nuclear reactors / weapons. Poor humans.

Hi manojach: I hate it as much as you do and as you said nuclear weapons won't make us safe, on the opposite, nuclear weapons put the world in danger. There is not a rational reason to support these kind of politics but i don't think this is going to stop in the near future just because every time a country starts their nuclear competition there would be another that will feel a menace on it so they will start another nuclear project and the story repeats. In my opinion the governements of the world don't really want to stop this. Thanks for making this important discussion about a topic that concerns everybody no matter what is their country. Have a nice day.
