hello everyone, i am just watching a tv show a while ago, i don't know if you are familiar with the show "ang pinaka" in QTv...well what they've got tonight is the 10 most embarrassing filipino traits and here they are... 10. fond of gossips 09. lack of discipline 08. ningas cogon - we don't have focus on what we are doing, we are just good in the beginning and easily lose interest 07. racism/regionalism 06. colonial mentality - we don't usually patronize our on products, there are still some who thinks that products from other nations are better than ours... 05. sutsot/dura/ihi just anywhere - i think this can also be included in lack of discipline 04. short memory - we easily forgets those issues that's happening to us specially with the people in the government 03. filipino time - being late 02. mañana habit/procrastination/ laziness 01. crab mentality what do you think fellow Filipinos? do you agree on this list that they have given? in my personal opinion, i think those traits are really embarrassing but its sad that it is still seen in most Filipinos... but no matter what, i know that not all Filipino are like this and i am still proud to be a Filipino...

Hmmmm, lol, with the exception of number 6, sounds pretty much like us, (americans) too. I have to ask though, on number 5, what exactly is "sutsot/dura/ihi"?

hehe...hello xfahctor! sorry i didn't translate it... sutsot - there are some people here when calling someone, they don't call them in their names or they don't call them properly, instead they just call them by 'pssssssssssssssssst!' hehe its difficult to translate... but one thing for sure its kinda rude at times dura/ihi - spit / peeing just anywhere...huh! anyway, thanks for dropping by...

Lol, yeh, sounds like us too then. With us often it's either "hey dude!" or something to that effect. As far as the peeing outside....lol...yep...more in rural area's though.

nah! i think that 'hey dude' is much better than our 'pssssssssssst!" coz its really sounds rude, seems like calling an animal...just like that... well at least its in rural areas, unlike here, even on cities you can see men peeing on posts or wherever...

I just agree with everything you say about us (Filipino). Lack of discipline must be the number one for this. That's why we need a president that will not lead us in words but in action, meaning to say, We need a president that will enforce/act what is in the constitution and Law. Another thing comment on the number five, Even there is a sign, most filipino don't read it, and they don't even care.

hello jmsmontecillo... actually those were not from mine, i just saw it on tv but i also agree in everything coz its just so true...and embarrassing. well i am not that clean coz i admit that i am guilty in some of those embarrassing traits...but that spitting and peeing just anywhere even if there's a sign written! huh! so disgusting...as if they dunno how to read or they just dunno how to understand or just rude & no discipline? i wish there's a more strict implementation of law with regards to this matter... and i hope those offenders will learn...

I was able to watch the show too, and for me the worst is the dura thing. Imagine if there is an epidemic and people just spit as they please. I don't know why Filipinos can't seem to hold it and would just pee anywhere (guys, I mean). Girls also have a need to pee, but have you seen girls just squatting in a remote corner of a building or street? As the guests said, it all boils down to discipline. You know you shouldn't but still persist on doing it.

yeah, that spit thing is disgusting that's why i like what they have done in marikina where spitting is not allowed in public places...huh! yeah discipline, i think that should be the number 1 embarrassing trait...lack of discipline and hat is worst is that even there's a sign saying that its not allowed! they still do! i think there should be a bigger punishment for those offenders...so that they will learn... thanks anne

I do agree with these list and colonial mentality should be put in number three because Filipinos in the modern world are very much westernized, sad to say, most of our "kababayans" patronized products which are branded where in fact it is not in the brands that emerged the real self but on how to carry the product. I remember one of my friends who really cringed when I prefer to buy the Marikina made shoes than the Italian brand, I find it ridiculous in the first place because I find the local brand more durable than those foreign brands. I always look for Filipino brand even in toothpaste and softdrinks. This trait really is very embarrassing.

hello jlamela! very true! and its just sick that some of our dear 'kababayans' are really proud and feel so popular whenever they are using imported brands! huh! what other people don't know is that we actually produce those products that are in great quality... its good to know that you are really patronizing our locally produced products...that will be a great help for our country... thanks jlamela!

Speaking of products... which one do you prefer, Jollibee or McDonalds? Which one will you watch, a Hollywood movie or a local one? I eat at Jollibee not only because I like their products more. But I seldom watch Filipino movies because most of them are trashy ones - I am not after effects, I am more on good, original stories acted out in the silver screen. What I mean is that, sometimes it's not about whether a product is imported or not. It's preference. But I do agree that many of our "kababayans" are going gaga on imported products while they have much better local ones.

Hello ckyera, My dear amiga, considering all these bad traits...i am proud to be a FILIPINO. And if given a second chance to choose to live again...i still prefer to be born again as who i am now.(Filipino) All those traits being enumerated above,we can also find it to any races, and much worst than we think/know. hello jaiho... yeah, me too! i am also proud to be a Filipino despite all those things that they are saying... maybe other races do have those traits as well, but its just been noticeable to some of our fellow filipinos , sad but true. the program just catch my attention coz it shows reality, all though not all are like that, still those were already attached to our name...huh! and as if the people involved has never changed... but anyway, as you said, its not only us who have such negative traits...we never know that other might even worst than us... and yeah. we should still be proud to be pinoy...for we also have much much positive traits that we should be proud of...

@albert, that's an individual behavior/attitude. There's more race who are more racists than us,reminds me of the typhoon "ondoy" where other races called us "monkey, brown monkey etc "(comments from youtube). And how about the WAL-MART incident?...that voice from costumer service area asking all black people to vacate the place? I can say,it's an individual pride...celebrity/singers...it's their ego...we never knew,i never knew since i am not a celebrity(how they are being treated, for acting or saying such words)

I'm guilty, guilty, guilty... it the truth and it hurts but i guess this is not limited to the Philippines. I guess we have it in each and everyone of us at time. I'm saying at times becuase we may have this trait, we don't do it all the time. For one, i hate number 10, but it's good to hear gossip sometimes especially if it concerns the bonus, you know what i mean, and it's Christmas! 9. I tried to be a law abiding citizen, my only guilt of breaking the law is not segregating my waste into five, we have it here in taguig but it's not being followed. 8 is i'm guilty, i guess we need a tap on the shoulder to get going. 7. i dont think so. 6. i love my own, in my own little way. 5. sutsot, i'm guilty but i dont dura but i made ihi in cases when i can't see any toilet near me. 4. Short memory, i'm guilty of this too. 3. filipino time, that's my time. 2. i'm guilty of this too. 1. slightly .

hi ybong! very honest answer! haha, and what can i say? you explained yourself already and i must agree that most of us do have these traits at one point of time... but i hope that you are not one of those who cross on the street even if there's a signage saying that' bawal tumawid, nakamamatay' haha, and hope that you are not one of those who throw garbage or pee even there's a sign of 'do not...' well anyway, thanks for your honest response and admitting that you are guilty of them at times...but ht is more important is that we are still doing our best to correct these things and change for the better...

Well, i'm a law abiding citizen. And yes, i don't cross the street when there's that sign. I've learned my lessons when i was issued a ticket for jaywalking and that's the first and the last. And i pont pee in posts, i pee only if there are bushes so i do it only when i'm in the province. And i usually carry candy wraps or plastic wrappers with me at home. It's one way of teaching the kids on how to be good citizens at an early age. Cheers!

When I was a kid I was too idealistic myself, I see a lot of mistakes around me. Fortunately, I was able to see and visit lots of places and I saw the difference between developed and under develop countries in the world, and everytime i come home, i felt awful what our country has to offer. I happened to lived in japan for two years, i saw their beautiful cities but i have seen people living in desperate areas too, i have seen all those malpractice that they do. I have seen poor areas in US and India maybe the worst in cleanliness. What I realized was condition of living of people differ totally when being poor and being rich. Normally, rich and beautiful areas people behave properly, whereas, poor and desperate areas behave all critics you mentioned. I have been in Singapore where it was declared to be the cleanest in the world, but in Singapore there is a place called Gelang and all sort of people are there, the drunk vomit everywhere and act the same you observed on the street. Education is very important in such manner, but people who live in the street dont care about education and they behave like animals. Who will discipline them, but they dont care about their lives anymore. Which means that we have a long way to go and it needs a rich and strong government to implement them. I am proud of being a Pilipino. Cheers

hello edujccz... what a good observation you have there and i think i agree with you that education also have something to do with this...but not in all those traits, maybe in terms of discipline yes. coz there are some negative traits that even an educated man possess...like that laziness, hehe but i think its not unique to Filipinos only coz i believe that even people from other nations do have this negative trait... i just recall what i saw this morning, while on the jeepney, i sa a man from the other jeepney and he looks fine, he looks decent and educated..but oh my god... he just spit from the jeepney! eiw...i feel so disgusted with what i saw to think that we are in a business area here in my place and we are actually in the heart of the city... but anyway, thanks for your beautiful share and like you i am still proud to be a Filipino for i believe that we do have lots of positive traits that we should be proud of...

lol =D Mommy, dun worry, filippino traits are still far much better than what we have here!! lol =D We dun like 'filippino' time, and thus, we tend to be over eager, by rushing down to queue up for things, OVERNIGHT!! lol =D Be it rain or shine, there are bound to be tons of ple camping there, just to be the first few.. And even if they are not interested in whatever products its there, they just wanna be part of it.. lol =D As for lack of discipline, we have lack of manner here.. We dun give up seats to elderly and children, or even pregnant woman!! If we see them, we will pretend to be sleeping, while leaving them to stand and manage on their own!! Typical singaporeans!! haha

YEah, it's just so true, to whatever u said here.. U can ask your singaporean frenz too.. lol =D BUt i'm definitely not one of them, for i'm a unicorn.. lol =D WHat's worst is that, they like to take their own sweet time to eat during pack lunch hours, and if they see ple standing around, they will be eating even slower, and even chatting with frenz!! PLus, in order not to lose their tables while ordering food, they will be 'reserving' the table with a packet of tissue paper.. lol =D YEah!! With fines, everybody here seems like a fine person.. When we are overseas, with no fines, that's where our nature self appears!! lol =D

haha...what the....huh! well, here we do reserve our tables by putting something there or leaving one person there...but what? when they saw many people waiting instead of eating fast, they will intentionally do it slower? huh! and what are they thinking? are they just being selfish? greedy or just ill mannered people! huh! i think some of that kind also exists here but very few... really? but what if you get caught in other place? hehe was that really the nature of singaporeans? your fellow citizens might rally against you for hat you are saying...

really? haha hmmm, so are you one of them? typical singaporean? huh! base on what you have said, people here are far much better than people there... coz even if we sometimes lack of discipline, most of the time we still have good manners... and up to present there's still many men out there ready to give their seat to the elders & pregnant women...even i, i am willing to give my seat to an old man/woman or to a pregnant woman...hehe but at least your country is known to be the most disciplined in the world...hehe but i guess its only because of the fines you are paying...hehe just kidding!

while its true that we have all those bad traits, im proud that we have uniquely good traits as compared to other countries. like 1. the use of PO and OPO as a respect to elderly. 2. being hospitable to visitors. 3. being able to smile and deliver jokes even at the worst time of our life. 4. caregiving for the elderly. 5. our famous bayanihan. and im sure there's a lot more! while others are still practicing these bad traits i believe that more filipinos have already learned to change and work on improving themselves from these ugly image.

Well, the show gave a good list but I don't think not all of those are exclusively Filipino. Other Asians, Americans, Africans or Europeans do gossips too. Racism/regionalism broke out from time to time anywhere around the world. Colonial mentality is common among subjugated countries. But anyway, whether Filipino or not, those are indeed embarrassing traits.

hello there ckyera, I never deny these traits are the bad seed that's coming out of every single Filipino in any place in the world. most specially number ten, nine and eight. frankly, am a bit of number eight but i don't know why maybe lack of motivation to go on or continue. i don't know if i can scroll and see myself in one of those ten traits but i do have some of them. that makes it bad for everything else for others.

Hello ckyera,I did'nt watched the show, but i think i agree with you ,all those in the list are really embarassing filipino traits. It shows the totality lack of discipline by a person who does such bad thing. It shows how they are as a person in their daily life.Alhough all in the list are embarassing but the most of it is Sutsot dura.I dont like to see a person spitting everywhere or peeing anywhere. Any way, only few filipinos were doing like that. Most of the filipinos are responsible enough in following rules and discipline implemented.I am a filipino and i am practicing a good filipino traits and behavior, including my family as much as we can to be a good citizen in the Philippines. Thanks,Have a great day!

philippines - proud to be filipino
here are three more you forgot to mention, but as with feeling great as a pinoy, there are lot of filipino embarrasing traits that one migth think of, i'm still trying to find out whether it is indeed unique to filipinos or we are just folowwing the tiede of other culture...CRAB MENTALITY-i believe this is quite to most filipino, this is attitude of bringing down someone when that someone is progressing in whatever he/she do...UNJUSTIFIED THRIFTNESS-filipino can bring a very noble trait to extreme and hide the generous filipino inside, in business for instance, giving to gain will never be a motto in some filipino business outlets...PROUD-yes, we are proud to be filipino as with the other cultures of other nation but sometimes, too proud that we forgot to look back where we came from (which makes this uniquely pino, i guess) and forgot that we are still on earth-humbleness or even an idea of it escape one's mind..

hello bart! yeah, with crab mentality, i wonder why there are some people who can't be happy with the success of other people...instead of being happy, they become jealous and envy the good fortune of other people and because of those feelings, they tend to do something that can bring that person down! huh! is it correct to say that we don't like others to surpass us? or to be better than us? or we just want to be always on the same level with everybody? haha...maybe its because of the crisis the world is experiencing now? haha that most become stingy...hehe yup! that's also common to some...being too proud! sometimes even they just get a small fortune, a little luck...their head becomes bigger, some also boasts and yeah forget where they came from! i guess, most of these traits are really something that has something to do with our past...many nations conquer our country and each one of them leaves those negative and positive traits that we have now...i guess what we have now is a mixture of different cultures...

Actually, I had responded to a question posed to me by a Filipino on one of my answers to him on SearWarp. He asked how marriage evolved in the process of evolution? And, I answered him from the Indian point of view, as how marriage started in India. He shot back with a question which did sound racist to me, asking, "Are Indians evolutionists too?" I was pretty much offended with that question, and I told him that it's not proper, and sounds very racist and he must rephrase it. But later I regretted if I had made a mistake, but now that you have mentioned that racism exists in Philippines, maybe his question was a bit racist to me. Otherwise, I have pretty good friends, especially women, who are very sweet and haven't been rude to me though. They seem to be more open toward people of other cultures. I never had the impression that filipinos are racists. Maybe the men are a bit rude and arrogant at times.

I agree to all (the TOP 10). I mean, i've witness them all happening in our daily living and guess what's worst? "I've been also doing them... except for some that i rarely do. And I strongly agree that i think, the worst traits that we have is the, "LACK OF DISCIPLINE!" I mean, all those other traits being mentioned above... all falls for the lack of discipline! So, i guess, instead of putting it at No. 8, it should be the first one that we should start changing...and the rest will follow. And in my own opinion... the best thing we should do, is to start changing our self... we might not totally change it, but at least, we could minimize it. It's a hard thing to do because it's part of our culture... it's who we are, "FILIPINOS".
