Do you eat locally grown foods?

Many of us, distracted by daily affairs, forget that the profound pleasures of eating go beyond simple sustenance. We eat foods that are convenient or we eat unconsciously, snacking on whatever happens to be on hand. Anyone who have ever shelled and eaten garden-grown peas or bitten into an apple freshly plucked from its tree, likely understand that there is a marked difference between these foods and those that are processed and stacked on supermarket shelves. Food recently picked contains more of its original life force and so has a greater store of energy and nutrient. When possible, it is always best to eat foods grown in the area where we live. The local Farmer's Market is often our best choice if we want to eat healthy. What has been your experience?

We have a small garden. I like to leave the produce in the garden as long as possible. Our small plot is right out the back door, so I can go get what I want at the time I want to prepare it. However, my husband just seems to like to want to pick. As soon as something is big enough pick, he will pick it. It does not matter whether I had planned to use it that day or not. How do I get through to him?

Fresh from the farm, that is the best kind of food we should consume to be healthy and remain healthy. But sad to say, these foods are also contaminated with pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and artificial fertilisers.

Changing my eating habits has been a priority to me since is important to set a good example for my kids. Eating more organic vegetables and fruits has been a struggle ,but I'm trying hard to shop from the Farmer's Market because eating healthy prevents you from getting sick.

Hi Pose, almost everything we eat is local as I don't buy expensive imported foods. Most of my fruit comes from friends gardens and the fishermen give me fresh fish and lobster. I've just been making jars full of homemade marmalade with oranges and lemons fresh from the trees as oranges are at their best right now and really are so much better when just picked. If the weather improves enough this week my friend will come over go do my olives for me and then I'll take them to the press and have fresh extra virgin olive oil and there's nothing better than that.

We are very fortunate in that we have a big garden where we grow a lot of vegetables and fruits, what we don't use we freeze so nothing gets wasted, but there's nothing nicer than going out in the garden and being able to pick the fruit straight from the bush or tree or plant. You can't get more organic or fresh than that! Knowing there are no chemicals on them we can eat them without having to wash them. Vegetables are much better for us if they are eaten raw and that's the beauty of growing them yourself you can eat them without worrying and you are eating all the goodness and more. We also have a big farm where we are where all the fruits and vegetables are grown on the farm. I also buy a lot of fruit and vegetables in the winter time from market stalls rather than from supermarkets.

My husband and I always try to eat locally grown foods. When we were in the USa, we got a lot of our grocceries from a wonderful organic groccery store next to a coffee shop that I liked to visit. Now back home in Canada, we live right next door to a fantastic Farmer's Market, where he goes every week to get all kinds of wonderful locally grown and prepared meat, produce, and cheese.

Yes, I do or at least I try to. In the winter it's very difficult because nothing grows in New England in the winter except beets and onions. I'm sorry I don't plan to eat beets and onions only from October to March I think I'll die. If I live somewhere like California, I would prefer to eat more locally, not just for myself, but more for the planet. As I said, I wish I lived somewhere I could seriously work on reducing my food mileage. One thing I've decided not to do is buy tropical fruits in the winter. They're not even from America. They're probably grown in Chile and picked by some seven year old. I don't need that on conscience.

Hello Pose. I eat mostly our local grown foods as I think that it is fresher, cheaper and it tastes better. The local food is easier to get. I seldom buy imported fruits as they are expensive as always, more than triple the price and I don't think that it is worth it for that high price. I love our local foods.

Yes I love locally grown food .In fact when I go to market ,I make sure I select those which are locally as those are the best kinds .The imported foods sometimes have hormones ,pesticides residues and other contaminants that may not be good for you .The only thing locally grown foods may have is pesticide residues

It is advisable to eat locally grown foods. That's far from ingesting GMO foods. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMO's pose some health risks still unknown to science.

Our hometown recently added a farmer's market and we couldn't be happier. This fall we especially enjoyed the harvest season because of it. A favorite vender was a local Amish man who sold the tastiest sweet-corn and we purchased from him every time we went there! We bought tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchini squash, honey, onions, peppers, sausage cheese bread, cookies and peaches throughout the fall. It was wonderful!
