Anything in your home that is strictly yours?

United States
December 13, 2009 10:25pm CST
I grew up in a large family and then had three daughters of my own, and seldom, if ever, was anything strictly my own...including clothes, as someone was always borrowing them. These days, though, no one had better chew the last piece of gum, eat the last piece of chocolate, or mess with my computer. If you have family, or if you live alone but do have visitors at times, is there anything in your home that is off limits to others and strictly yours?

Hi Karen! Interesting post. Except my identity, my clothes, my shaving kit, my tooth-brush and my shoes are mine...........lol! rest of the things are shared between the family members. There is nothing as such which could be called exclusively for me. When one lives in a family with better half and children most of things are shared and one cannot help it. Have a great day! Deepak

My dad. He is strictly no for any other girl. I am not good at sharing parent. :( Funny, I was always match making for him when I was a kid. But the moment he appreciates another person, I am green with envy. I just want him to think I am the best. :(

Vandana! If you had a sister, I think your mindset would have not been the same. Probably, you would have learnt to share the love of parents since your childhood, because your mind would have been conditioned by your parents that you need to share everything with your siblings.

Hi deepak, just wanted to know whether everybody is like that, or is it only me? :) I am sure if I had a sister, she would have had ample wounds to show around. :)

LOL, I wanted that last piece of gum to. I got a kick out of your discussion. I guess everything in here is mine. I have never put things up from the grandson, he had to learn to leave glassware etc. alone when he was young. My son does get on my computer sometime but i don't care. I don't have near the company that i use to. I use to cook alot & invite people over but don't feel like doing alot of that anymore . People don't seem to visit like they use to, everyone is busy. U behave yourself now & share your gum. lol

LOL, hi Jo. The only time I think I really had all things to myself was when I lived alone, and even then, sometimes my daughters would ask to borrow clothes or books, which I don't mind as long as I get them back lol. Like you, I don't have company very often any more either. Yup, everyone is awfully busy! I'll share my gum, lol...unless it is the last piece. I suppose I might share half of that :) Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, IN fact, in my home, everything belongs to us, including my both the sons, who have their own homes with their spouses and children, but they do belong to us. o body has right to claim. But feeling your sense of irony, I would flatly and with strong words say that my hubby is only mine, rest any thing can be used by anyone in the family. Wishing you a very happy New Year-2010. May God bless You and have a great time.

LOL, my friend. Yes, one's hubby should belong you the wife alone :) Most things in a family are shared, but for a very few personal items...but when all of my daughters were home, even my underthings would sometimes go missing from the drawer lol. I wish you the most blessed of New Years! Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, Well, nice that you shared your private and entirely personnel relationswith your daughters. But In our case, we have never used any under-garments so far. My hubby is presently using shirts/T-shirts/Swetors only discarded by my sons as they became out-dated for them. Even I use sarees hanging in ward-robes of my DILs. I know, they hardly use them. But, off coyurse, we have only common soap in bath-room, and all sanitery items are seperately used. May God bless You and have a great time.

There's not too much that's off limits from my kids, but they don't really go into my things, they usually ask. My husband is slowly learning to be as well behaved.

Hi Dawnald. My kiddos, when young, DID tend to get into my things, but I was always finding better places to keep those things. It was mainly clothes when they got to be teens. LOL about your husband! Now, though I gladly lend or share a number of things, some are just for my own use! Karen

This is one thing you learn about marriage, nothing is just yours anymore. This includes your body. But over the years I have managed to take back a little of what was only mine. The way I do it is to hide it. Just some old school pictures and correspondence.

Good for you for tucking a few things away. I think especially moms and wives need a little something that is still theirs alone :) Karen

I have to say most of my things are off limits because I hardly lend people my clothes nor any important thing I have. My laptop is also something that is off limits because I intend to have somebody ask me if they want to use it first before it is shipped off to somebody's lap. I grew up having my own things and so I make sure everything is accounted for so that nothing gets lost.

Hi Sublime. That is probably a good policy. I still loan out some things, but not my most important or expensive things, as I need them and they are too hard to replace if something happens to them! Karen

I have always been possessive about my things, though i was brought up in a situation like yours. I do get anygry on those who mess up with my books, or art work. Otherwise i don't personally mind people using my things :)

Hi Joanna. Earning our own money and buying what we need or would like to own is a nice feeling. I share many things, but not the ones I mentioned. I will share gum and chocolate, unless it is the last piece of either lol. But not my computer! I used to and I had to many bad experiences with that. Karen

Hi, I live with my husband. So we share everything i think except for clothes. So i can say my clothes r strictly mine. Before marriage i was living with my parents and two sisters. Me and one of my sisters are of same size ,so we used to share our clothes also.

I grew up as an only child so I was fortunate in that there were many things that were strictly mine. However, my parents did pretty well in ensuring that I knew how to share so I have no problems sharing to this day. Most people who meet me for the first time think I grew up with a huge brood. :) At present, there are things that are mine that I don't share cos my hubby doesn't use my girly things and my daughter is too young to share anything I own, except food perhaps!

Hello to you. One of my daughters has an only child, but he is good with sharing as he has a lot of interaction with others. I have no problems sharing most things, but some are too expensive and too important to my life or earning a living to loan out :)) Karen

Each item I buy is my personal item that means no one can use even borrow it without my permission. When I was a kid and still one home with brothers and other relatives, I often fight with my brothers and sisters just because they use or borrow my stuff without permission. Maybe I'm including those cheapskate but I do not like people do not appreciate my efforts to purchase goods

14 Dec 09
Hi Advokatku. I think that is part of why my computer is exclusively mine. It cost money, money I earned the hard way, and it is my livlihood! So while I will share or loan many things, some are purely off limits, especially to those people who've disrespected my property in the past! Karen

Yes my bed is off limit and I call it a no goal zone.No one place with my bed. Some people prefer a particular seat or sofa or even a particular plat.

Now that you mention it, Mkings, you're right. We do tend to develop our particularly favorite places to sit, etc., in our homes. And kudos for making your bed and no goal zone :)) Karen

I am too sensitive when it comes to my personal belongings like all stuff in my bed, I hate to see them arranged or disarranged not by me. My personal coins and different countries currency collections are also included in my watch list. I do not like someone using my bath soap and shampoo too.
