Don't we hate it when we accidentally knock down a glass container/bottle/cup?

Yesterday ,I was about to switch off the light to go to bed ;just before going to bed I accidentally knocked on a medicine bottle of mine and it broke to pieces. .Of course , I had to sweep and clean up the place because we ourselves would step on the pieces. It was qute irritating however . One incident was brought to mind.Long back, when I was in a small town I was living upstairs , in a rented place.THe place had a mango tree in the backyard and the leaves and branches were also sprawling on our parapet wall. One day, at 9oclock at night , a monkey came in through the backdoor hopped on to a shelf and picking the big glassbottle that was there, hopped back and sat on the parapet wall.THe moment I saw it , I just took a step forward .Sensing danger, that little devil dropped the bottle down with a bang.It scattered to a million pieces on the downstairs backyard [the landlord 's family was residing there in the downstairs portion] and this was the area where the sump was and we used to take drinking water from. Can you imagine my distress and the laborious work it involved? I went downstairs and cleaned up the entire area lest someone should injure the feet.[Many people walk barefooted there] Have you accidentally broken glassware ? Isn't it very irritating? Do share.

Hi Kalav! How are you? Welcome back to mylot! It gets really very disturbing when a glass container/bottle breaks into tiny pieces. We just feel very bad and start cursing ourselves for our carelessness. I can visualize your agony of clearing all the stairs so that others did not get injured. Few weeks ago while pulling out ice tray from refrigerator my better half dropped that metal tray and it fell on the glass cover of fruit/vegetable basket which was at the bottom of the refrigerator. The moment ice tray, which was full of ice cubes, fell on the thick glass, it broke into several tiny pieces and scattered all over the refrigerator and are around refrigerator. It was really very troublesome to get rid of those numerous tiny pieces of glass. And the irony was it was our neighbor who came and requested for the ice tray. In her hurry to give our neighbor the ice tray the mishap took place. It took nearly one month to get the new glass cover from the company because the same size glass cover was short in supply. After that we remain doubly careful, while pulling out ice trays from the refrigerator. Have a great day! Deepak

Hi DEEPAK! I am fine and all things went off very well.Getting back to normal slowly. If you had been in Mumbai I would have sent you some shaadi sweets. They were marvellous[some special southIndian caterer called PATTAPPA]. And coming to the discussion, how annoying would it have been! I can well visualise it and so much for our good intentions to help the neighbour. My mind boggles at the thought of cleaning up the place.Did she do it all alone or did the whole family help your wife in sorting out the mess?

If you have little kids running around with barefoot, then you would have very little glassware at home.Isn't it?Or do foodstuff come in glassware alone?

domino effect - The domino effect is a chain reaction that occurs when a small change causes a similar change nearby, which then will cause another similar change, and so on in linear sequence. The term is best known as a mechanical effect, and is used as an analogy to a falling row of dominoes. It typically refers to a linked sequence of events where the time between successive events is relatively small. It can be used literally (an observed series of actual collisions) or metaphorically (complex systems such as global finance, or in politics, where linkage is only a hypothesis).
Same here. I really dont like knocking things off. Falling objects just have that uncanny way of engaging a domino effect. Like on the dinner table, when one glass is knocked down, the liquid in it spills to the table, food, utensils and people, the food gets ruined, and the people get wet, frustrated and upset spoiling their appetites. Everybody would have to help in cleaning so that there could still be some food salvageable. You're right that we have to clean those up as soon as possible cause there are times when the place it shatters has a high level of activity. It could be the stairs, the doorway, the middle of the room, etc. We could never risk injuring ourselves and other people because we delayed cleaning it up. We were Christmas shopping this afternoon and a glass flask of some sort interested me. I grabbed the top cover thinking that it was secure, only to find out otherwise. Good thing I was able to catch it before it hit the floor. If not, my Mom's wallet will hit the floor. Yes, it was that expensive. Close call huh?

Thank God !You were lucky to catch it . At home , we are doubly careful lifting a jar by its lid[especially wehn it contains some fluids like ghee].IT is terribly clumsy and difficult to handle.

I don´t usually break things now but last week I broke a dish. It just fell from my hands: I still don´t know how it happened. What I do know is that I had to sweep a huge area. I don´t get how a small plate can have so many little pieces and how they can travel so far away. It´s almost summer in my country and I walk barefooted many times inside the house. My grandchildren do that too. So it was sweeping and moping so that not a single piece of glass remained on the floor. And yes, I hated it and I hated myself for being so careless. Fortunatly those things make you angry for just a little while, while you are cleaning up. Then you forget about them as they are not really important. Happy posting!

Oh! Kalav, my sentiments. :) Irritating and annoying. :) I too dislike anything so upsetting. :( Well, it is all the more annoying if the maid does it, isn't it? LOL. It gets higher value, we tend to forgive ourselves a bit, even though we are not too pleased with ourselves. I have broken plenty of glasses and objects that I wouldn't have wanted broken.:) So recalling and sharing one...:) I remember when I was young, in 7th or 8th standard. I was staying over with Dad's friend for vacation. :) We used to wash the glasses. And then bang the inevitable happened. :) Well the sound was not much. So I just placed the glass in a corner, hoping somebody else would accidentally knock it off and take the blame. But the old lady there had seen smarter people. So she asked me when it happened. I just didnt have the guts to deny. Luckily, no bangings, or scoldings. But since it is not my home where I broke the glass, I still remember the episode. :(

Mothers would naturally get annoyed if glassware is broken at home.Apart from the value attached to the glassware, the pain of sweeping and mopping up the place littered with glass is greater than any other value attached to the ware.

I usually LOVE it when I knock over glasses. The best is when I knock them over when im going to sleep or when they fall places that are really hard to get to. Then I get to clean it UP! My favorite is when the glass breaks in dangerous, upward pointing shards. The challenge is the best part! I like when the glass was containing a large amount of red hot marbles as well.

Yes, and because I'm spastic I do this more often than any human being should at my age. But, I've accepted it and moved on because there are more important things in life than how many classes you break. This, of course, applies only to regular glassware. If I'm in a situation where I'm forced to handle fancy glassware at some event, all I'm thinking to myself as I pick up the cup or put the fork down is, "don't shake, don't shake, don't shake." This is counterproductive because the more I think about it the more likely I am to do it.

I am sorry and I can well imagine the tension you would have when handling fancy stuff.I would feel the same way though I am without any external problems.

What a cute story. Yes, I am clumbsy and break things. In fact, this morning my soup "exploded" in the oven and I just got done cleaning up the mess. When this happens, at first I feel a brief twinge of anger but then I remember that everything happens for a reason and that it is probably life telling me to slow down and just enjoy the miracle that life is. Then it is no longer annoying. I love to be barefooted when the weather allows (sometimes it is too hot and sometimes it is too cold!) and you are right, just a little sliver of glass can be quite a bother.

And drannh! there is even a cuter story. In the same house , one day a monkey hopped in and marched away with a bottle of raisins.THe landlord's wife on hearing this commented "Ah good! it is your offering to the Lord AAnjaneya"[Lord AAnjaneya IS THE MONKEY GOD in Hindu mythology who plays a very significant role in the Hidu epic RAMAYANA.

I have never had the experience of breaking the glasswre and then the ordeal of picking the pieces.I did break a cup and once a plate but that was within the sink .So clearing that was not such a hard task though the thought of losing an expensive crockery was pricking me.

I think its sooo irritating to break glass especially because not only is the glass itself destroyed, you have now opened up the possibility of getting a piece of it stuck in your foot. So you need to make sure to sweep up all of the pieces.

I hate it when I break a glass container, not only glass item, it can be anything. Recently, I broke a timepiece of my friend, who is my room mate. I felt very bad after the incident even though she has not taken it as a serious issue. I hate to break and loose things. I feel very sad to loose things compared to breakig things. I will be extra careful when I borrow and use others things.

rIGHTLY SAID.I too feel terrible when I lose something out of carelessness. It makes us feel very guilty.AS for this it is a real big nuisance to clean up.And to lose others' things is a real burden on our mind.We can even excuse ourselves if it is our own thing but we generally feel terrible if we llose our friend's or anyone else's.I can well understand the feeling.

It's rare for me to drop things like glasses and mugs, and then break them. It only hapens if I'm absentminded, but it gets annoying when people drop glass on the floor and it breaks into pieces. My brother opened the fridge one time and the glass container of relish fell on him, (somehow) so i helped him cleaned it up, and i could've sworn we got every piece up there. A day later, i was walking barefooted and my foot stepped into a piece of glass, it sucked, i had to take it out. 2 days after that, my mother had HER hamd caught on glass, (i don't know how that happened) So its really frustrating.

Hi, Kalav. I had been accidentally know down a glass. It was really troublesome when we need to clean it carefully. The pieces of glass is very dangerous once it thrust into human's skin. When the small piece of glass (micro size) flow into the blood and follow the circulation of the blood to our body. So it might causing fatal. Once injured by pieces of glass it should be go to see doctor immediately. The wound also need to clean properly. Other than that we need to clean up the place carefully as Kalav said. It is a tedious job to clean up the broken glassware. It is better to use those pottery type of glass and bottle. Pottery won't broke into small pieces, and it is not sharp. Have a nice day :D

Wow, I can’t imagine a monkey coming through the back door! As a matter of fact I can’t imagine anything like that coming through my door! The last time I broke something made of glass was last week actually. I was very angry because, not only it made a terrible mess but it was an annoying waste of money! You see, I went out of my way to go to a different shop to buy my favourite coffee which happened to be on sale resulting in a six dollar saving which I thought was substantial. I put my new unopened jar of coffee in the cupboard in front of some plates and of course as soon as I needed to get a dish out of the cupboard I knocked the entire jar on to the floor resulting in one entire jar of expensive coffee wasted and glass and granules everywhere inside and outside of the cupboard! Grrr!! These things happen...SIGH...
