Did You All Have A "Normal Christmas Dinner"? Well, I Sure Didn't!!!

Hey All! Opal Here! Well, It started out as a nice normal Christmas Day! I got up, started to get the turkey ready to cook, but it just didn't look quite right, but trying to be optimistic I seasoned it and put it in the oven anyway! There was something about one of the wings that bothered me! Well, the turkey was cooking for about 3 hours and not smelling turkey like~not smelling at all, which is just not normal! So, finally after it is done, I took a good look at it and said to my boyfriend, we can't eat this bird, there is something definitely wrong with it! It is not looking the way a turkey should look cooked, it doesn't smell at all after cooking for 4 hours, and I don't want to die! So, I had to cancel my Christmas Dinner at the last minute! The damn bird was rancid! I will be calling my local grocery store tomorrow to tell them that they ruined my Christmas Dinner! I have cooked enough birds in my time to know when I have got one that is a "sick bird"! So me and my guests dined on "Take Out Chinese Food"! Did anyone else have a Christmas Dinner Disaster? I hope not!

Hi momma! It could have been worse! We could have eaten the bird and gotten deathly ill! I know I made the right choice to throw it out! It definitely was a sick bird! That was one of the red flags too the fact that it didn't look right, it didn't smell when it was cooking! I'm glad you had a great holiday!

Opal,That is the kind of luck I usually have but with me it is in buying "things". If there is a defective piece of equipment or a toy on that shelf....my little hand is going to go for it like a magnet. I'll bet your glad that it is all over and you can hopefully kick back and relax now. phew!

Of all the days it happened on christmas day. I hope you get refund for your turkey. I had a very successful open house and luckily the food was enough for lunch and dinner. I cooked randomly as I really can't figure out how many people are coming. I cooked 10 different types of dishes for the day much to the delight of our guests who made double helpings on the foods. Glad it is all over and am back to mylotting.

Glad you found it before anybody has the chance to eat it. It will make your Christmas dinner a lot worst 2 times. Chinese take out foods is not that bad...actually they are yummy. But I really understand how you feel. You even exerted an effort to prepare the turkey the best you can do but sometimes things don't come our way the easy way...right?

Hi lyzabelle! I just didn't like the way the turkey looked from the beginning. I cooked it and the fact that it didn't have that wonderful turkey smell and it just didn't look like all my other cooke turkeys looked was just too many "don't dare eat it" signs! "When in doubt, throw it out"!

Rancid turkey! Sorry to hear about that. It's a shame that had to happen to you. Dinner here? Fresh pea soup, and not rancid, PTL. Dorcas made it this afternoon. For fun, after the second cup I added instant mashed potatoes, salt, and a dash of pepper.

If you had served it and everyone got sick it certainly would have been worse all the way around. I am hungry for some butternut squash soup.

Well the turkey must be tenderized and also you can do is if you don't know how to cook a turkey then you should look for a ready made turkey so that it will be the best Christmas of the year

Hi Opal, I feel sorry to learn that you had encountered some problem when preparing your last Christmas dinner I think you might do the marketing rather in a rush therefore you never had a whole checking before purchasing the turkey. Or might be you trust the vendor for you are his regular customer. Yeah, it’s rather disappointed that the not fresh and defective bird had spoiled the Christmas Eve dinner atmosphere for sure. Anyway I believe you had had a pleasant and romantic new year eve dinner a week or so back with your loved one. I wonder whether the owner of the grocery store given any compensation to you later. I’m not a Christian therefore I don’t prepare Christmas dinner. But I enjoyed watching the countdown ceremony live tv broadcast to welcome Christmas. I will prepare more delicious dishes on Chinese New Year Eve dinner for my family for sure. It’s still five weeks to go before the Chinese New Year. It seems that there is not much time left for me to deal with all sorts of things to welcome this festive day. Happy posting

Hi lkbooi! I love Chinese New Year! Did you see that what we did have for our Christmas Dinner was Chinese Food and that is my very favorite! The turkey was a frozen turkey bought at a grocery store where I always shop and unfortunately, I was the only person to have this problem! But, I got my money back! And like I said I ended up having my favorite food anyway! Where I live there are a few Chinese Restaurants that I know the owners and I love to go there for Chinese New Years! I have become friends with them over the many years and it is such fun to celebrate their holiday too! Happy New Year to you and your family in advance!

Hi Opal, at first I thought that you didn’t have sufficient time to go for your favorite restaurant anymore. Therefore you just simply picked whatever food to serve as dinner in that very moment. You live in united state right? It’s out of my expectation that people there like you do love Chinese food. It’s so nice to know that you are a Chinese food lover. No wonder you chose Chinese food for Christmas Eve dinner then. I’m glad to know that you have got your money back. The owner of the grocery is really a nice person. It sounds that you are not only regular customer of these chinese food restaurants you are their friends as well. Here in my place there are thousand and one diverse Chinese foods available here and all of them are respective delicious. The price of them is low as compared to those in big town and cities. We like to take our relatives as well as friends to the nearby seafood restaurant to enjoy the fresh and yummy dishes served there when they visit us during Chinese New Year. This outlet is famous of its seafood. It is located in a fishing village and we can reach there by spending just about a twenty minute drive. Take care and have a nice day!

Since I live with my mom, we had a simple Christmas dinner of chicken macaroni salad and ham sandwiches. We had our family traditional get together early where we dined out, but I have never experienced any Christmas dinner disasters. The only disaster in terms of cooking for guests would be the live tilapia that I wasn't finished grilling by the time my guests arrived a few years ago for my birthday. Since the tilapia was alive and kicking, I had no idea how I could grill the fish let alone kill it so that I could clean and cook it.

Not this year, but a long time ago, maybe even before I moved out west, the family got together at my mom's for our Christmas get-together. My sister-in-law was responsible for the turkey that year, but the darn thing wouldn't defrost and by dinnertime still wasn't cooked enough to eat. We ended up getting a bucket of Kentucky Fried... not quite the same.

No. Mine was fine. Sorry to hear about yours. Too bad you couldn't have done something earlier to replace the bird. I wonder how it got rancid. I sure hope you have your receipt. Haha. How did you dispose of it? Ugh! I would definitely give the grocer a piece of your mind! And I would be very certain to check things from then on.

Hi celtic! I called the store's Manager first thing this morning! He was very nice and said to bring my store card so they can print out the receipt! They will "make it up to me" which I guess means return my money! Great! How about the money for the dinner that I had to pay for to replace the rancid bird? Yeah, right! I threw the turkey out because it was making me gag! I am still upset! I was going to get another one, but bf said "no way"! So I will either get some lobster tails or a nice cut of steak for New Years instead with the refunded money!

Hiya, Opal! *S* I am sorry your bird was bad and your planned dinner scrapped but, at least you found some place open, right? I've only had one disaster and that wasn't even a meal I was in charge of. We had Christmas lunch at my daughter's in-laws one year. All the food was ready, except for the turkey. When they went to get it out of the oven, they discovered the heating coil had gone out and the turkey wasn't even close to being cooked. You would think they would have noticed early on, wouldn't you? Fortunately, I had one already cooked for our dinner the next day. So, I ran back to my house and got it and "fixed" the meal. That left me with trying to figure out what to do about my dinner the next day. It all worked out even though it wasn't our traditional Christmas dinner. We had plenty of food and the best part was we had a fabulous time with our friends that year.

Ack! That is awful. I would be at grocers for my money back, too. No, we had a good Christmas dinner...stuffed pork loin roast, homemade breads, peas, mashed potatoes and gravy, salads, and apple pie. My youngest daughter spent a couple of days with us, so that was a great treat too. I'm sorry your dinner was ruined :( Karen

Sorry about your rancid bird Opal26. I had a normal Christmas Dinner. I guess normal now means just us, and without the extended family. We got through it, and I even had a little buzz before I went to bed. I've never had take out Chinese food on Christmas before. But that's an idea! Instead of all the preparation that we had to go through, it'll just be as easy as picking up the phone.

Hey bounce! I really loved having Chinese Food since it is really one of my all time favs! But, it was the principle of it all! I cooked all day and had to throw out the bird, and the sides! I spoke to the Manager of the store and he said that they "would make it up to me"! So, I guess I will get my money back! I wanted to get another bird, but my boyfriend said "no way"! So, I am thinking about getting some nice lobster tails or a nice cut of steak for New Year's Eve instead! And nice to meet ya! Sent you a friend's request!

Oh no! Did the grocery store refund you or make amends? (i'm alittle pokey responding) Our christmas dinner was pretty normal. Turkey, potatoes, stuffing, carrots, cranberries...the only thing different was...Rather than being at my mom's or grandmas and them cooking it...my Sister held christmas and she cooked dinner.

Hi opal, I hope you've kept the offending turkey to take back to the shop with you. That's terrible that they are willing to sell gone off meat and as you say you can always tell. I've been getting any meat recently from a butcher in one of the supermarkets in town and the other week I asked for some beef and he refused to sell it to me as said it wasn't fresh, but they were still selling it on to others as supermarket policy. It certainly means I'd never buy any meat from the meat cabinet as I bet that's the first thing they wrap up to sell for convenience. I so wish we could have had Chinese food, they don't have any places over here except way over in Athens. We ate roast chicken yesterday.

All I needed was my store card so they could print the receipt. I guess they will give me the money or another bird! I don't want that store brand bird, but I think I still want to cook my turkey! Oh, Opal! I'm so sorry this has happened to you and your boyfriend! What a waste and especially on Christmas! I don't blame you for wanting to call the grocery store tomorrow to tell them about it. You worked so hard to have a good dinner and found out you couldn't eat it.Luckily, I didn't have any disasters. I usually eat Christmas Dinner with my sister, her husband, and family. However, her family didn't come home this year so I had a pretty quiet Christmas by myself. I ate my Christmas Dinner at Ruby Tuesday's tonight and I had a turkey sandwich. That was my turkey, lol, but it was good. I hope next Christmas will be better for you. Hugs! Kathy.

Hiya Opal, What a Christmas Dinner I only hope the Chinese Food was really good to help you and specially you forget that bad incident. Meat that has gone off usually gives off a really awful pong. Was it a frozen turkey that you had to defrost first? Just thinking because a fresh turkey would surely give you the warning signs if it was off. Shame that but at least you could call the Chinese Restaurant everything here closes on the 25th of December full stop. Hugs. Sue.xxx

Hi Sue! It was a frozen turkey, but it didn't look right! And it didn't smell at all when it was cooking! A healthy turkey smells wonderful when it is cooking! Also, the carcass had a "sick" look inside! I have made too many turkeys in my time to know that this one wasn't a healthy bird!

Hiya opal, He or she should be giving you your money back and pretty quick. Perhaps being frozen it´s gone over the date and that´s why it was so tricky to tell the difference. Anyway did you have the Chinese Cookies with your Chinese Take Away? Hope they were full of good tidings Opal.
