I think we all get in those situations at times when we mindlessly sit in front of the television and/or computer and eat certain foods. Not really out of hunger, but just because it's there and we can eat it. The thing that I eat all the time is Reese's peanut butter cups. I could eat those things non-stop and it wouldn't bother me one bit. I actually have a few empty wrappers sitting next to me at this moment where I just ate a few of them. I know that those things aren't necessarily healthy for me, but it's kind of hard to break the habit of eating junk food, even when you're not hungry. So, what is your comfort food? What is it that you eat when you're watching tv, working on the computer, or something that you eat just because it's been a rough or stressful day?

If you love chocolate then you might want to try nutella. You can find it at most grocery stores in the same isle with peanut butter. It is milk chocolate hazelnut spread. Imagine warm chocolate with the consistency of peanut butter on waffles or pancakes in the morning, or frosted all over some cake, or a little dollop inside of a crescent roll. Even when you want to eat something healthy like a slice of whole wheat bread or some apple or pear slices. It is sooo flippin good!

I am also a lover of chocolate. I like both white and milk chocolate, but never cared much for dark chocolate. Something awesome that you should try sometime if possible if you like chocolate is Oreo truffles. You take Oreo cookies and crush them (after removing the cream center). Then mix in cream cheese and blend well. After this, roll the mixture up into little balls and dip them in either white or milk chocolate. Let them sit in the refrigerator for a little while to cool and they will be ready to serve. My wife and I made them for my family's Christmas dinner. They were very easy to make and delicious!

For me comfort foods are pizza and brownies. For some reason, I find these foods comforting after a long day or getting news that I just did not want to hear. The other strange one is waffles. It seems like when we are stressed or feeling down we turn to those high carb foods that are just so comforting. I wondering why it is foods high in carbs that are comforting?

Carbs do make you feel good huh? I think that comfort food is waaay different than junk food like candy and chips. Comfort food is all about warmth and that fuzzy feeling. Pizza can do that. Brownies can do that. Heavy cream, bread, they all feel so good when you digest them.

Just like the comforting hug that you need so much. I think that when we do not have someone else support and understanding for what we are going through it is kind of instictually that we turn to food. The food makes us feel better when nothing else or no one else is there to comfort us. I think it is interesting how when we are the most vulnerable we turn to the one thing that we know will not judge us - food. We might know it is loaded with calories or be thinking of our budgets, but in the end we give-in to comfort foods just because we so need to feel better in that moment.

I love comfort food. I think I have probably made ten different macaroni and cheese casaroles. Now that there is four feet of snow blocking my escape into the outside world all I can think about is chilli and cornbread. Chilli for me is comforting because it is thick, and rich and filling. It is warm and spicy. And it can be made with anything. Vegetarean, chicken, beef, all beans. All chilli is good chilli. If you want outstanding chilli, even if it out of a can, you know the kind that goes great with chilli dogs (mmm chilli dogs.....), then you gotta have sourcream and cheddar cheese and corn bread.
There was a chili cornbread shepherd's pie thing that I had at a family function. It was like chilli baked with the cornbread batter on top. I later tried this same thing for a party and everyone liked it, I hope they did because there were no left overs.
And the other great thing about chilli is that you can make a HUGE batch of chilli and be set up with some frozen for later, which means you can be lazy later on, and you can use chilli on so many things. I've made my own chilli cheese burritos, nachos, I've put chilli inside puff pastry and baked it for h'our dervs. Chilli can be a condiment or a star or breakfast.
To me comfort food is what you eat when you want to enjoy what you are eating, or recapture a bit of your childhood or relive a favorite memory. It is something that you make for your friends and family so that they know that you love them.

I used to eat sunflower seeds all the time, and still do from time to time. My favorite was the sunflower seeds in the shell. I always thought the flavor of those was so much better than the plain old sunflower seeds. A lot of times when I am traveling somewhere, I will stop at a gas station and get some sunflower seeds and Mountain Dew as a snack to have going down the road.

Ice cream is a must have comfort food...there is just no way around it! There are so many types of ice cream that I love too! I am beginning to love a new soft-serve that you can get at Sonic fast food restaurants in their new milkshake. It's peppermint soft serve and it's addicting. I know peppermint flavored ice cream is not everyone's cup of tea, but I love peppermint flavoring anyway. Other than that, I would have to say that my favorite type of ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough. What is your favorite ice cream?

Believe it or not, I don't go for the junk food, I go right for the cheese everytime. It was my favorite thing to snack on when I was a kid, and I guess I never really grew out of it.

There was a time that I would never even consider eating cheese. As a child, my aunt (who was also my babysitter) would cook macaroni and cheese all the time. It got to the point that I couldn't stand the smell of macaroni and cheese and quit eating cheese altogether. I am getting to where I will eat cheese more now. I will eat cheeseburgers, tacos with cheese, cheese fries, and other things. However, I still cannot bring myself to eat macaroni and cheese, the smell still makes me sick!

hi scott!
it really depends on the situation but the one food that comes to mind when i think of 'comfort foods' is chocolate. it can be the branded kind like m&m's, toblerone, or cadbury's or it can be the local one's that we have here in manila. when i feel stressed or i'm not feeling my usual self, i take chocolates and i fell better. i know it has something to do with the chemicals in the chocolates that stimulate our body to make it feel better. i also know that chocolates don't really rank up high as one of the best health foods but i think taken in moderation chocolates can really be good for me. lol!!!
by the way, welcome to mylot and hope to see more of your discussions.
cheers!!!

I love sweet stuff so it would have to be cookies or vanilla caramel ice cream.
But nothing wrong with having a handful of potato chips either.

Ha, I've been definitely known to do this. What with having already had one Christmas celebration earlier this week, I have TONS of left overs that include mashed potatoes (YUM!) and lentil soup (YUMMER!). I pretty much feast on these every chance I can get!

I hear you on the mashed potatoes! I love potatoes just about of any kind. My nephew cooked some cheese mashed potatoes for us the other night and they were amazing! And of course, I am a sucker for Texas Cheese Fries from Chili's so I just had to learn how to make them myself and I did just that a couple nights ago. I cooked the fries on the stove top, then put them in an oven-safe dish, poured shredded cheese and jalapeno peppers and bacon pieces all over them and put them in the oven to melt the cheese. Sadly, I ate all but a small portion of them. I'm sure all that cheese and those peppers didn't help my stomach...but I love them!

CHEESE!!! it's my downfall! My favorite food in the world is pizza and if I have some available will tear into it, if not, I make my own out of whatever I have on hand...as long as it has cheese on it! Just a few nights ago I was pretty stressed out over the holidays and was really needing something to just pig out on. The night before I had fried some potatoes and onions and I knew I had just bought a block of colby/jack cheese...so I decided to shred some and slather it all over a plate of those potatoes!I popped the plate in the microwave for a minute then topped it with a bit of hot sauce.... It was heavenly and made me feel better, at least until the next day when I realized how much I had eaten LOL!

I'm with you on this one...there aren't many foods that I dislike...especially when it comes to junk food! I've never had much to do with anything flavored with or made from sweet potatoes. However, there is one type of food made from sweet potatoes that I LOVE. My wife's aunt makes sweet potato pancakes a lot and they are awesome! I have always loved pancakes, but never had anything other than the usual type of pancakes until she made them out of sweet potatoes.

I love non-veg food and love good food. Eating good food makes my day especially that of the hotel. Home cooked food is quite boring as everyday the same.
There should be a change always.
I too love junk food and control over it ,in other words I am addicted to it.
