Do you check reviews or IMDB ratings before going out to see a movie?

Do you? I RARELY check reviews because I often find that I don't agree with them and therefore their opinions don't stop me from watching the movies I want or like to watch. But it some cases, it seems like reviewers hit the hammer on the nail - or whatever that cliche is. Doesn't it, though? Sometimes I wish I wouldn't have wasted $10 at the movie (plus popcorn, which is another $6) on a movie that ends up being really dumb, unoriginal, and pointless. *sigh*. How do you feel about this? Do you make it a habit to check ratings and reviews before seeing a movie? Or do you just go see whatever you want, with little regard to reviewer's opinions?

Yes, I do check them and if the rating of the film is really low (below 4) I never watch it. However, there are movies with bad rating that worth seeing, but not these with rating below 4. I've seen a lot of bad movies just out of stubborness and now I am more careful when it comes to picking a movie to watch

IMDB seems like it has a very harsh bunch of raters though. A lot of my favorite movies are in the 5-6 star range!

Yes, that is what I meant. I don't consider the rating important if it is about 5 or 6, because there are many good movies within this range, and I have watched movies with more than 7 that are no good for me. So, it is enough for me to see that the rating of the movie I am about to watch is more than 4.

Well, in most cases. Just through previews/casting/basic storyline plot I can pretty much tell if it's going to be a good movie. I also always consider the person directing the movie and weigh it kind of a bit based on how their past movies were. Such as let's say one person made about 50 flops and 1 successful movie since the start of his/her career, I wouldn't put too much hope into it that the new one whatever it may be would be any good. So to answer your question, no I don't check the reviews at IMDB, however. I do check the place to figure out who's cast, the director, and to get an idea of the storyline. Possibly even to watch over any trailers they might have released. I mean, if I followed people's opinions for half the movies I watch I would have missed out some pretty A+ movies. The only opinion I like to listen to is my own when choosing a movie I would want to watch.

i don't check before...but I love to look up the movie after I watch it on IMDB and check out all the trivia and errors. I really get a kick out of that...guess that goes to show what a nerd I am lol

That makes two of us. I will sometimes watch it again, to see some of the more blatant mistakes. I read some of the reviews, but more often I use IMDB if I liked a movie, performance of specific actor or script, and then go and find the body of work of that person.

I check the ratings before I see movies most of the times, and there are some times that I agree with their rating but mostly, people give such poor ratings to good movies- I guess people's tastes really vary. The ratings help me decide whether a movie is worth a watch or not.

People who review and rate on imdb don't know that much about movies really. l found that l disagree about most stuff with them. l just see the movies l think will be interesting and don'r care what others say.

Sometimes I do because I can read a review and then decide that I would like to see that film. Sometimes though, if it is a film which I have already decided to see I tend to avoid reviews because I do not want to be influenced by them.

I see reviews in my newspaper and on Rotten Tomatoes more than on IMBD. But the critics are rarely the decider of whether I see a movie or not. I usually decide whether I want to see a movie or not by watching the previews, knowing the story and looking at who made the movie (directors, actors, writers, etc).

I always check IMDB for the rating they have given the movie. Since the ratings come from real people, I think they like the genre the movie I want to watch. Which in turn gives them a respectable view about the movie and rate accordingly. At times when I'm not too sure about the movie, I check its plot just to make sure that the movie I want to watch will be entertaining. Checking reviews is not a must for me but I do look at some sometimes. Just to inform myself that the movie is going to be all that, none of this and some of those elements.
