Do you re-use gift bags?

Gift bags - for re-use - Re-use gift bags for other presents

It is easier to put presents on gift-bags instead of the usual box and wrapping it with gift paper. So when you receive one, do you recycle it? And by recycle I mean not putting them on the bin to re-use the paper. I mean do you use it put in your own presents for other people? Not only Christmas presents. This year my son got a few birthday gifs on gift-bags which I've taken the time to neatly fold and store in the garage. The next kid's birthday party we go to, will have our present in one of these gift-bags.

For the gift I got my sister , a gift bag was far better than a box. In our family we reuse gift bags and boxes all the time. They get stored with all the other Christmas stuff and we bring them out and use them Every year.

Tis the season. Now that it is over, on to more hockey.

That is very nice. If it is already understood within the family. And that it gets reused every year. It does emphasize that it is not the wrapper or the gift bag which is important, but the gift itself, and maybe the thought itself. Thanks for dropping by sarahruthbeth22. Even thought this discussion is not hockey related.

I re-use gift bags all the time, everytime I get one, I neatly fold it up and put it away. I don't think I had to buy any gift bags this Christmas, I just had to go look in my stash and see what I had, hey, some of those gift bags aren't cheap, so why not re-use them.

You are absolutely right that some of them are not cheap. Sometimes it takes up some of the expense that should have gone to the gift itself. Thanks for responding walijo2008

I like gift bags a lot! I use a lot of tissue paper so it is not easy for someone to peek in and see what they have inside!! I reuse them every chance I get, it doesn't make sense to me not to reuse them! Throw them away? no way! They're made pretty sturdy and easy to store after you fold them down. If there's anyone here that don't like reusing them, I'll gladly take all of their extras!! I'm sure I would find a use for each and every one of them! I collect and reuse the gift boxes you get when you get clothes....easy to fold and store. I'm not usually at a loss to where I have to go buy new, if I do, I go to discount stores where these things don't cost very much at all.

Hi mz663. Glad to know that if anybody here does not recycle their gift bags, you would gladly take them off their hands. But surely, you can't get my extras because I reuse them myself.

Yes we do use the bags again, why not? It's easier, and that way we won't have to go to the store and buy up a bunch last minute when a gift we want to wrap would be to obvious, so would need to go in a gift bag. Oh and of course any time of the year, but I think mostly people save the Christmas ones as there's more Christmas presents then Birthday Presents usually.

Oh yes, the tissue paper takes no time to be put in, a twist at the bottom, a fluff at the top, or just a "cram" in the bag sort of thing! lol! Walmart, the one stop shop!

Hi someCowgirl. Not only are the giftbags good for too-obvious gifts, but like you said, it is also good for last minute wrapping. When my kid gets invited to birthday parties, often times the gifts are afterthoughts. So we just pop in a walmart, get the gift and prepare the gift at stoplights going to the party. It also helps that the paper-tissue can be stuck in crumpled. Thanks for responding.

Yes, I reuse gift bags. I used to reuse gift wrapping paper, but I quit that. The paper was getting too tattered from being used so many times. Also, it was getting smaller with each use, and I wasn't giving or receiving many jewelry box size presents. Kidding aside, I do still recycle gift bows.

At most, you can only reuse gift wrapping paper one other time. Unlike gift bags, which can be reused and reused. Thanks for responding bellis716. And here's hoping that your next gift will be in a jewelry sized box, wrapped in a recycled gift wrapping paper, and inside a reused gift bag.

I try to recycle gifts bags but sometimes they still end up in the trash because either some stain got on them or the cats tear them to pieces lol. Luckily where I get my gift bags, it really doesn't cost much. I spend anywhere from fifty cents to a dollar on bags and a dollar on gift paper. I do agree it is much easier to put gifts in a bag than trying to wrap them up and also less of a mess to clean up.

Well that was one time I got a bag for fifty cents at a local dollar store but this time I spent a dollar on each gift bag by getting them at this store called Dollar Tree. How much are they usually at Walmart?

Hi BinaryKat. Where do you get these gift bags that cost you only fifty cents? I get them at Wal-Mart, and still they tend to be expensive.

we reuse as much as possible. So we reuse gift bags, tissue paper, and bows, if possible. It's better for the environment and well, more economical.

If gift bags and wrapping paper have been wripped, torn, or badly marked up, I won't re-use them, but if the paper or bag is still in great condition I will re-use it. My grandfather has been known to pen gifts with a jack knife, to save the paper. Not a bad idea in this age of recycling.

I don't use gift bags usually to put presents for other people, but I use them some times if I have something to pass on to somebody. I haven't gifted anybody anything in a very long time..... So maybe when I have the need or chance to do it, I may do that. I don't throw them away, I keep them safe too, in case I need them.

Great thinking of keeping them safe for future use. It does make a good impression if you use gift bags to pass on some things to somebody. Thanks cobradene.

I am keen on clutter clearing. I have been given a pretty gift bag with a snowy scene and some polar bears on it. I did think of recycling it or using it as a gift bag for a friend's birthday. It would be a friend that was born in the winter. It is so lovely that I might keep it and use it for storage purposes.

I will certainly re-use gift bags if they are in good condition. Why use it once and waste it if it still looks decent? Plus, it saves money. Gift bags can be expensive.

we recycle the bags...not paper that would be too time consuming but if we get anything in bags we save them and use them for other occasions. Its good because you dont have to buy any, and most of the time they are really nice bags! why would you throw away a bag that looks really expensive! lol

Sometimes they just don't look expensive, they are really expensive. Add to it the paper-tissue that goes with the present, and the small to/from card. And to think the kids who get these presents just discard it away after getting their gifts. Thanks for responding brit_200!

I love to find gift bags on sale or reduced price after the season. Sometimes they even come with their own tissue paper. It is a chance to get them inexpensively. Of course I reuse the ones I receive. I also reuse the decorative gift boxes, too. I have learned to be picky about where I put the tag, so it does not damage the picture or decoration.

Hi there. Yes, I've done it before. But only if the gift bag is still in shape and doesn't have any labels, markings or (gasp) gift tags. LOL. I did this before because I was in such a hurry and have no time to wrap my present. But I don't have any qualms about doing it again. :-)

Nice to hear that you also do this. Considering that it is relatively cheaper to buy gift bags at where you at. You should see the prices of these gift bags here! If you add up the tag and the paper-tissue, sometimes it is more expensive than the gift! Thanks arystine.

You would be crazy not to. Bags and giftwrap are a huge expence if you give many gifts in a year. With a large family we are always giving something to someone. Everyone in our family recycles bags so I am sure that I have some that are a few years old. I save the comics from the sunday paper to wrap kids gifts in too. It's fun and free. I was reading a blog the other day and the author uses discount wallpaper that she gets for a dollar a roll for wrapping paper. My theory is if you can save on the wrap you can spend a little more on the gifts.

Hi terrile. Thanks for responding. The sunday comics for kids wrapper is a good idea. The kids don't really mind what their gifts come in. They just want to tear it out and get what's inside. So, why not use something free? Thanks for the tip.

I love gift bags! I have my own collection, I even save the ones from stores that use the same kind of bag. I put a lot into making gifts look pretty and personalized. And a gift bag is a great way to preserve the wrapping itself instead of tearing it to shredl like paper. I have been known to personalize a shopping bag, like one from Victoria's secret, and make it look like something totally different. You can tell if you have fooled the person you give the gift to because if you haven't they will say, out loud, "is this a Victoria's Secret bag?" So you have to get really creative. I've made logos to cover up christmas pictures for someones birthday even. I don't think I have bought a bag in a while, I just save the ones I get and the ones that other people don't want. One of my friends kept a gift bag I decorated because she loved the thought and the work I put into making the whole gift something she would love.

Hello tawny! I think your on to something there. Is this something you could do professionally? Maybe your looking into a business here. I've seen people using ordinary gift bags to place their lunches, so maybe this could be a market for your personalized bags. Just thinking...

YOu know that is a good idea! I wonder how well it would do? I love making collages and scapbooks and photo albums. Maybe, we will have to see? Would you like to see what they look like? I could make you one. I use photos and clippings, glitter... very fun. It would be difficult to personalize a whole bunch of bags and make it profitable.

I have never reused gift bags although I probably should. We realy don't get that many gift bags which is probably why I have never reused them but I know even the few times that I did get them would work well for the few times that I give them out...I would just have to worry about making sure they keep and not get damp or something....this is something that I will have to remember =)

Yes. I used to buy bags for the presents but I have so many bags at home that this year I decided to use them, instead of buying new ones. The funny thing was that I almost gave a present to a friend with the bag she gave me few days earlier. I am happy that I figured it out on time :)

Nice save! That could have been embarassing. But I bet your friend does the same too. Re-using gift bags. I think it is a common practice, based on the responses here in this discussion. I guess the only guideline about gift-bag recycling is to let a few days pass by before re-using them. Preferably months after, so as just not to make a mistake, similar to the one you almost did!

I don't see anything wrong with reusing gift bags, especially if the bag still nice, yes, i do re-use gift bags, just like you,.whenever my son got presents i usually keep the bag so we can re-use it when we have to attend kid's party., last time i remember we attend party then i use the gift bag that ive been keeping for how many months, but when i ask my son to reach the gift to the celebrant he strongly said " no, this is mine! " funny because he really thinks that it's his gift which he got from his godmother last christmas. so, what i did is...i simply get the stuff inside the gift bag and gave it to the celebrant.,my son brought the gift bag home again:(

Hi myramae19. Well, that's one way of recycling the gift bag. To just give the present and keep the bag for yourself! Thanks for responding.
