Have you ever published on Lulu.com?

I am writing a lot - mainly articles though as they are easier to sell. I have a few ideas and drafts for books though as well. As I know how hard it is to get published, I consider using Lulu.com for self publishing.
Have you ever used the site? What are your experiences?

I haven't used the site, but it's like any other publishing site. You must drive traffic to your product. If you're not able to do that you won't sell very much. I know several people who have items for sale at Lulu.com and their only complaint is that they don't know how to drive traffic to it. I know one person who was able to promote his product successfully and Amazon and Barns and Noble picked it up.

You are exactly correct thebeaddoodler. Promotion of any product will be up to the writer for the most part, except in rare occasions. However, promotion does not have to be all that difficult, especially for a writer. Press releases, taking the time to meet with local newspaper editors - especially weekly and smaller newspapers, talking to local radio personalities, and even setting up booths at conventions that are relevant to your book subject can go a long way in promoting your product. Never forget how important it is to let friends and family know and ask them to tell their friends as well. Write and submit articles and use your bio to your advantage.

Thanks for the feeback. I am thinking of publishing there myself. I wouldn't expect massive sales, but it would be nice to sell a little bit. I have a blog already in the topic so I'd use it to promote it.

Thanks. Good luck to you as well. I find Helium quite easy - it doesn't take too long to write one article. But a whole book just takes a lot more time...

I'm a little torn, whether to publish my book physically or publish them at Lulu. Lulu has a lot of advantages in that you do not need to keep stock of the books yourself. But it would also mean that buyers would not get their books immediately.
If I have the books published physically, I would have to find a place for storage and it would also mean that I have to find an avenue to promote my books to various organizations myself. I may have to compare the profit margin.

I use a site called triond for self publishing. I'm not sure if lulu pays more but triond is very diligent with their payments and have a low payout amount of 50 cents.

Thanks for the idea. I am always sceptical with sites with such a low payout - it usually means that you find it hard to earn more within reasonable times. I write on Helium and it is okay to earn there.
