I leave them at room temperature for about 10 minutes at least and then I cook them with cold water. In that way, the outside will warm little by little and you will have a good hardboiled egg ( or soft boiled if you take it out sooner).
My grandma said that the time to took a hardboiled egg well done was to pray 3 Hail Mary´s from the time they started to boil. I think this is rather primitive
, but I would say 3 to 4 minutes would do al well.

I add a bit of salt and that keeps the eggs intact. Try that and see if it helps you. Good Luck!
