Right now - at 6 a.m., its 23º - that's like -4º for you C type people. GREAT if you are in Canada or Alaska, but we don't have the CLOTHES for this in TEXAS! Now, why am I up at this crazy hour of the morning (not because I have to be up - but because I had so many cats in bed I couldn't get comfortable after they woke me up a few hours ago... I have one sock on and one off - going to have to go put on socks... I set a new, all time HIGH for cats in bed - 13! They are pretty good bed warmers, but when you are talking that many cats - you are also talking about over 100 POUNDS on the top of the covers! Hard to put an Elic under all that! So, I had to come in here and tell you guys about it - send warm thoughts to those of us in Texas, we DON'T know how to handle this much cold! This is Elic, signing off in freezing Texas - and after all that complaining about the 100's and more last summer I feel like I should keep my mouth shut, but - where's all that global warming?!?!

Hi Elic, that's cold, even for us crazy centigrade types. It sounds like you go from one extreme to the other, a bit like here. Today we have an extremely beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine, I'd imagine it's up in your 70's. The longer it lasts the better, as last winter was hell. On the down side we are once again without water.

Last year this time I posted that it was 82º - that's really nice - kind of like your days and we were out enjoying it and cleaning the car - no outside this year! Sorry you don't have water - we actually have had enough rain since September to break the worst of the drought - but the lakes are still on the low side.

Hee! Thea, I'm grinning because a local well-known science fiction writer once wrote a novel about a huge planet which had the peculiar set-up that caused it to have ice ages for one year (which were really looong years, like maybe a 1000 of Earth's), & then brief transitional seasons, & an equally very hot long Summer. So half the time everyone was freezing & just trying to survive, & the other half saw scientific advances & growth, but again, then the trick was to survive the heat! As you say, "from one extreme to the other!" The Winters were named Paatra, & the Summers Baank, & the planet was known as Paatra-Baank! I'll give you 3 guesses as to what inspired such a place, & the first 2 don't count! Maggiepie HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY (& a somewhat warmer!) 2010!

Even though we know that there is cold weather to be had, we don't like it! The winter months are not my favorite. Even the southern most states are experiencing colder temperatures. Freaky.

yeah, and Texas isn't used to this cold, sure, we got up during the day to the 40's yesterday (Sat) and its already 40 today (Sun) but those 20's we are not used to! Bring on the sweaters and hot tea!

I've heard of a Bear Hug,before..but That many moggies on top must be like the feline equivalent! Don't you get into the bed before they do? I only had the one cat,but when it was cold, sometimes I'd wake up with a furry Hat,and I KNEW I didn't go to bed with a moustache!

I've heard in some areas of Texas as having snow as well. But wow that IS unusual weather for Texas...We're supposed to go into the deep freeze beginning tomorrow with temps not much higher, and the wind factor will of course make it feel colder--it wasn't unusual for me to have that many cats on my bed when I used to have more...as it is with just two they feel like a hundred pounds each---And yeah, where's global warming???

I was 7 degrees when I got up this morning in Ohio. We got 4 inches of snow yesterday and will probably add an inch today. Wind chill factor is 2 degrees! All that global warming is ridiculous. Still, sorry you are cold! How do you make that degree sign?

Burrr. I think for once I must agree--I could use some of that hot fantasy Algore has about the earth heating up, myself! I'm freezing (even wearing my fuzzy slippers & wooly cape!), but I refuse, after finally getting my electric bill cut by $30(!), to turn on the heater! I meant it when I asked if I could rent some of your furry herd!!! BRRRR! Even I can get too cold sometimes! Maggiepie HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY 2010!

Well, if you read my latest discussion - we could need some of your cats here to warm the house.. Actually, it has been pretty warm indoors, but -30C is really cold outdoors - and the air gets so dry that even the toilet paper gets electric... At the moment we have about -3C, that is really warm for being in January..Global warming is on again..

Yup, we have rather warm houses and we are used to warm clothes and know how to use them - A cold weather is not a big surprise here.. We live quite close to the North Pole and the ice bears.. -20 is a comfortable temperature if it is not windy..

burrr !!! -30ºC I'm complaining about -3ºC!!! The night the wind was blowing the house just wasn't well enough weather stripped and it was cold inside - now that the wind has let up, it is better. see, we just don't know how to build for the cold!

I know global warming is a myth - I'm making fun of them... I have gloves and scarfs, but still need ear covering - ooo that wind hurts the ears! I was only out for less than 10 minutes at a pop - and most of that time was in the car, getting it to warm up!

its finding the way to get under the covers with 100+ pounds of cats on top of the covers! Those cats were warm and they weren't moving - heck, I even pet one of the feral kittens because she wanted to stay on the bed more than she wanted to get away from me!

Scarlet, if Elic doesn't give you Best Response for that funny little post, I'm going to open all the doors & windows next time she comes over here 'til she sees it my way! You are definitely a primo cat person, & "get" them completely! There's not enough room in Elic's house for a throw rug, let alone a second bed, but I do understand. And yes, they would still sleep with her! About the only hope she might have to lure them off her would be to get them their own electric blanket, & spread it out over the other furniture in her room! If she does, I want to see photos! It would resemble a multicolored fur carpet! Maggiepie HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY (& a somewhat warmer!) 2010!

I feel your cold, Elic! Honest! When it gets down into the single digits here, I want to climb in a hole and hybernate until Spring. I guess you're kinda lucky to have all those cats for warmth, though. I know it's uncomfortable in bed when you can't even roll over but that's better than freezing! I've been sleeping with 2 dogs and one LARGE kitty squeezed up as close as possible to me. Actually, the dogs prefer it under the covers with me. As for global warming, I think it has forgotten about us, at least here in the U.S. I hear it's also exceptionally cold in the U.K. right now, as well. This season sure has been an award winner for being the coldest ever! I have to go buy a pair of mittens today. I have plenty of gloves but my left hand now has a huge bandage on it with only my index finger and thumb exposed so I can't wear a glove on that hand and my exposed digits REALLY feel the cold! FYI, if the cold gets right into your bones, take a hot shower or, even better, a hot bath until you can't take the heat anymore. That'll keep you warm for awhile.

yeah - saw you hurt your hand - glad it wasn't that cold the couple of Marchs ago when I got bit by Mitten - I had a honking big bandage on my right index finger - and yes, I'm right handed... if push comes to shove, tonight I'm getting the roomie to help me clear off the bed long enough to get IN!

LOL...what are you complaining about? It was 6 degrees here this morning in Oklahoma. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 11 in the morning, and Sunday we're supposed to bask in 26 degree warmth when we arise. Our cats are too nocturnal to sleep with us, but our chihuahuas are like little hot water bottles. Infortunately we only have two, so maybe we should consider 11 more. We'd certainly be able to do away with the alarm clock with 13 of them

I heard one time that global warming is any extreme weather, if that's the case maybe "warming" isn't the best name. It sure is extreme right now. I live outside of Pgh. Pa. and it's in the 20's here also, but we are used to the cold. I feel bad for the people that live in places that are supposed to be warm but are freezing. Someone said it was warmer here than in parts of Fla. I hope it warms up soon. Maybe we'll have a heat wave in the 40's. Our weather here in November was warmer than usual but we sure are making up for it now!

When it gets real hot up here (which isn't often) the media always says about heat exhaustion and what to look for and check on older people etc. But your right, up north we are more concerned with frost bite and hypothermia. It is supposed to go into the single digits tonight and the wind chill will make it worse.

I don't buy this whole global warming stuff - after all, Erik the Red settled Greenland with the Vikings during a warm spell during the end of the first millennium - and where were all the cars and stuff warming it up then - the only thing that can affect the weather is the sun - it makes ozone, it shines hotter or not as hot due to its own weather - and we have no way of affecting that.

According to some people, global warming has leveled off and some even think we may be reversing things. How to handle the cold: wear layers of clothing. Put wood in a wood stove or if you have a space heater, turn it on. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you.

Not that it's cold ALL year round...but who says we here in Canada, "like" the cold weather? I live in Toronto Ontario, and our weather here is more or less the same, as that of New York City. More the same than less, actually. Only those that live farther north or in the middle provinces, probably like this kind of weather, since it hits them the hardest due to the jet streams Arctic air flow, and the fact that they're used to it. But not me...I for one can't stand it. I say, bring on the summer, and heat me baby!!!!! That's what I say. Cheers; cdrxo

Yeah, call me crazy, I know. But what can I say? I was born here. Sure, I should be used to it by now...and sure, it was great when I was a KID. But truthfully, I'd rather be in southern California or the Bahamas right now...or ANYTHING closer to the equator...either coast! I'd come back to Canada only for the summer. Summers here are absolutely wonderful. Well, except for last year. Too much rain, and it didn't really arrive until mid August. However, that was highly unusual, and very rarely if ever happens. cdrxo
