a rice cooker is very popular in asia because rice is our staple food. but this cooker can be turned into a multi-cooker if it's the only thing you have and you need to cook something else. on my birthday a couple of years ago, the stove burst as i was about to cook spaghetti. in short, i ended up cooking pasta and spaghetti in a rice cooker and fried the chicken there, too. what dishes have you tried cooking in a rice cooker aside from of course, rice? enjoy mylotting!

i used to have rice cooker but i gave it away to my cousin, i was advised by this e-guy that having this kind of appliances (rice cooker, hair iron, oven toaster, bread maker) eats up alot of electricity because of filament in it...

you are correct! any heating appliances (rice cooker, electric stove, electric iron, electric airpot, etc..) will consume more electricity compared to non heating appliances. also, cooling appliances (aircon, ref, freezer, etc...) consume lot of electricity.

hello and thanks! electric bill is perhaps expensive in your country so you decided to give it up. in thailand it's cheaper so most appliances are electric including frying pans, pots and almost everything.

Normally i will use rice cooker to cook steamboat food. The vegetables and meat will cook when you soak it in the soup. The rice coker definitely is a good utensil to cook porridge. This is very easy and convinient. It is very popular in Asia country.

The rice cooker or slow cooker is great at preparing other foods too besides rice. I have tried to cook many different things like stews or other kinds of soups. Its really handy if you have to be out all day and then the meal is fully cooked and ready to eat once you get home.

I use mine strictly for rice. I was told that if you cook anything else in there, it will ruin it for rice. By the way, I love my rice cooker.

Hello! I didn't know that there exists such things like rise cooker what is it like? is it like a boiling pot or something like that? I like rice as well but I make it in a simple boiling pot. I guess in that cooker it would be much faster Have a great day!

Cheiyen, I have used it to cook my favorite Chinese desserts like Green Bean Soup, Red Bean with Lotus Seed, White Fungus with Rock Sugar and many more. There are also occasions when I will cook soups like Ginseng Chicken Soup, Chinese Mushroom Chicken Soups, Black Chicken with Wolfberry Soup, Lotus Root and Pork Ribs. It is also a good steamer where I can steam fish, eggs and even minced pork when I cook my rice. I am just glad my cooking days are now over and relinquished to someone more capable and knowledgeable than me. My lifetime Domestic Engineer, I think you have a close idea who she is. Take care and have a nice day at the kitchen.

I love my rice cooker and make rice all the time now, but I have yet to cook anything else in there, I did add some chicken in the rice one time though, I chopped it in small pieces and it kind of steamed cooked in there with the rice. It was nice and tender and tasted good, but I don't know if 20 minutes would have been enough to cook the chicken had I put it in there whole.

Right now im currently debating on investing in my very first rice cooker, simply because im getting tired of the rice always beeing stuck or close to burned in the pot. And you can easier keep the rice warm for a longer period compared to when cooked in a pot. But it sounds interesting that there is other options for cooking other kinds of meals in a rice cooker :)

hahahaha, it's funny that you opened up this discussion. a friend of mine cooked noodles, fried eggs and sauted corned beef in her rice cooker. it's actually cool that it has so many uses. filipinos have a very resourceful way of thinking, wont you agree?
