Why is it so hard to find the right tenant?

My parents are looking for a tenant to rent out a room to, since they have a spare room, and could do with the extra cash. Recently, there have been a few people who responded to my online ads. There was a girl who was quite interested, and came down to view the place. She said she liked it, that it looked very homely, negotiated the price down considerably (which my parents agreed to because they felt she was a nice person - better a nice tenant who pays less than a lousy tenant who pays more but gives lots of trouble) and asked for 3 days to consider. Then on the third day, she asked to view the room again, and wanted more time to check on getting an internet connection set up for the room. Then two days later, she replied that the room had the nicest view of all she'd seen but she won't be taking it after all. It was quite disappointing, after she had viewed it twice, and mentioned each time that she was very interested in the room. After that, I put up ads again, and two people have come to view the room since. A third set up an appointment to view, but on the day of the appointment she texted to cancel the appointment. Am hoping the room gets rented out soon, and the right tenant comes along! Have you had any similar experiences? It's really not easy finding a tenant huh?

It's surprising to know that, tenants are hard to come by?? Especially in your case, when rental has already reduced to what she wanted, and thus she's not satisfied?? I guess it's their loss, to miss out on such a deal.. Over at my side, my room was once rented out when i was still very young then.. hehe ^_^ I dunno how it works, but it was rented to a group of 3 ple.. BUt, like u say, they paid more rental to us, but they do give problems too.. haha =D As such, my mom learnt her lessons and till date, we have stopped renting out rooms.. hehe

yup, it's hard enough to live with family and sometimes share flats with friends, much less total strangers!

I think renting a room is much harder than renting out an apartment. With renting a room - its basically just like having a roommate - only I know that if I was living with other people, I would want more than just my bedroom to represent me... if you know what I mean. It would take awhile to get used to the owners and going thru the cabinets/frdige - watching TV in the livingroom, etc. So I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - but you're going to need to find a certain kind of person that ill do all that. Do you live in Pennsylvania? haha I'd give you my tenant! lol And can I ask what you are charging for a bedroom these days?

indeed, it is very difficult to find a tenant... i also have a spare room in my house and me and my hubby had been thinking for quite some times now to rent it out to earn extra money every month... but on the second thought, we still value our privacy more than money... that's why we haven't rented it out yet until now as we don't want to have a headache if we got a wrong tenant... take care and have a nice day...

I have never rented anything out so I have not had the experience...but my sister owns a rental unit and she has trouble all the time....and then sometimes they destroy the place before they leave! Is a never ending battle for her!

I did have that experience. We were 3 girls together rent a 3 rooms apartment, then because one of the girl has to leave, and the other girl and i have different location at work, so we try to let someone rent it.But it turn out like what your parents are suffering. I think we are disappointed because we have too much expect.Good luck to your parents. I hope you will fins omeone soon!
