2 & 7 years for kidnap and rape of two young girls. What is up with that?

I was watching the news last night and the Canadian justice system never ceases to amaze me! I heard about a couple in Winnipeg that kidnapped and raped two girls ages 13 & 14. One was released after being repeatedly raped and the other was tied up and held. She was raped repeatedly also and the broadcast said that she was humiliated in every way possible. The couple that did these things were given a slap on the wrist as far as I am concerned. The woman was released after doing only 2 years in jail. They said she had served her time while awaiting trial and that was enough. The man was sentenced to 7 years, which means he will only serve just under 5. I am furious that these people got such light sentences for a crime that totally ruined the lives of two little girls! What kind of deterent is that? I would be interested in your opinion.

Its really very absurding to hear that they are given such a short sentence, If I would be the judged then I will give them punishment to be a handicap for whole. So that they couldnt even bear to live there own lives themselves. That Judge must be a real A** and he is a ba***rd too.

I sometimes wonder if the judge is a child molester himself or something when they give out these ridiculous sentences!

I agree that it's outrageous. I don't understand why someone like this wouldn't be classed as a dangerous offender and locked up indefinitely. I believe in giving people second chances, but violent rape is treated far too lightly in this country. I think it should be considered to be as serious as murder.

We do have a law here that says that dangerous offenders are not eligible for parole until mandatory. That means they have to serve the full 2/3 of their sentence. I don't understand that either. If you are only serving 5 years why do they call the sentence 7 years? I think that's to appease the public because most people don't know about that part.

WOW! I dont know a whole lot about the justice system in the US let alone Canada. But I hope its more harsh in the US. That was not nearly enough time for those people.

From what we are told here we have one of the best justice systems in the world! I think we just have a legal system, there's no justice in this decision.

Trust me its just as bad in the States, if not worse. Read my responce on the second page and you'll see how bad it is here.

i agree with you. i think it's disgusting that such a brutal crime can warrant such a weak punishment. the two rapists should have had a much longer and stricter punishment. not only did they rape, but they kidnapped and committed assault...shouldn't that constitute 2 or 3 counts for each of them? i highly doubt that either of these 2 individuals were so reformed after 2 (or 7 years) to allow them to walk the streets freely. what probably happened is that the woman was given a plea bargain to provide information or testify against the man, so that's why her sentence was considerably lighter than his.

My understanding from the story was that the woman had been in jail all this time (it happened 2 years ago) and because she hadn't actually raped or assaulted the girls (just helped kidnap them and watched I guess)they felt she had served enough time. Ridiculous!

Wow...that is really scary that those people will be released so soon, probably just to go and rape some more children. How sad...

The scariest thing is that this happened 2 years ago and they were just sentenced yesterday. The woman had been in jail, so she was released after sentencing, having already served her 2 year sentence while awaiting trial. That's something they do here, take into consideration the time already served.

That is just crazy! those poor girls will be horrified for life! they will never be the same!! I think that the people that commit crimes such as raping someone should just be locked up for ever!!!!!!!

I don't get that part either. As far as I'm concerned the woman is just as guilty as the man. What kind of woman would do such a thing?

S*xual predators have the highest rate of recidivism of any type of the crime. This means they are less likely to be rehabilitated and more likely to do it again. A burglar might not break into some place and rob it, a car thief might not steal a car again, but a s*x offender is likely to do it again. I support Jessica's law wherein the offender is given 25 years minimum. At the least that is 25 years before the person can re-offend.

I support that law as well. I don't understand why a judge wouldn't automatically give them the maximum sentence, just because it's the right thing to do morally.

that's so unfair! they can just walk out and be free after the short jail term? what about the 2 girls who are being scarred for life? This is ridiculous! i felt that the sentence is too light

Sounds like your criminal justice system is just as messed up as ours in the US. Neither one of them should see the light of day for the rest of their lives as far as I'm concerned. So sad, and to think those poor girls lives are completely ruined. I think I preferred the vigilantism of the Old West here in the US to the crap they're dishing out these days, nothing wrong with a good old eye for an eye.

I agree 100%, but unfortunately we would probably be the ones doing the real time.

I whole-heartedly agree with you. Their sentences were much too light. Two and seven years in jail is practically nothing! It's ridiculous!

And now the woman is free to do it again. I will never understand anyone that participates in these crimes, especially a woman. I think she should be sterilized so that she can't have any kids of her own.
