We live in such a big world and what is big news in one country, never makes it into the newspapers in other countries. What was the topic of the day in your area?
I only read online newspapers so the frontpage headline changes very fast. Right now the front headline in the local section is about serious traffic accidents in Iceland. They have increased by 43,6% comepared to same time last year!
Unfortunately many of the victims of fatal accidents in Iceland are foreigners who are either traveling here or just moved here. They don't realize how dangerous our roads can be and that there is a reason for lower speed limits here than in most other countries.
The international front headline at the moment is about increasing obesity in European countries. Health ministers and Health ministry staff from 48 countries are meeting in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss the problem. They say that 50% of adults and 1 in 5 of European children are overweight. This is a topic that deserves a discussion of it's own. I hope the ministers come up with a magic solution for this problem.
It would be interesting to know if this story made it to your newspaper (if you live in Europe).

I actually live in the Asia Pacific region, so the major news would be the entire nuclear threat in North Korea, being that they're so near.
Then the haze, caused by people burning stretches of forests in Indonesia, which results in smog blanketing Singapore on a seasonal basis, particularly bad this year.
Some tsunami alert in the Phillipines brings up the threat that our country could get washed away on the next tide. (Which would be really bad, because if we have to be hit by a tsunami, I'd really prefer to have Clay Aiken visit me, like he did Indonesia.)
George Bush is here on a visit, something to do with APEC and trade, and possibly the "China threat".

I am from Scotland and the biggest headline today in the paper i read is 'Girl, 13, raped at TV circus' One of the latest reality TV shows at the moment is Cirque De Celebrite, where celebrities train with circus entertainers and compete each week to make it through to the next week. One of the big top stars who is helping the celebrities train has been arrested and charged with raping the girl after she went to see the show on Sunday night.

I gave up reading newspapers several years ago and do not have a clue what the front page story is.
The main reason for this was the lack of social responsibilty demonstrated by newspapers. I appreciate that they have a business to run and selling more copies is a major factor in this, although it should be tempered with a responsibility to the public to report important news.
It was not uncommon for the newspapers to carry a picture on the front page of some actor from a soap opera who was seen in a night club with an actress. I have no complaints about people wanting to read this, but all too often this meant that important international events received a few column inches on page 7.

You'll just have to learn Icelandic and get your news form www.mbl.is. Our media is pretty good at delivering news from around the world and the gossip is usually kept to a minimum in one of the back pages. We have been bombarded with some bad gossip magazines lately though but the newspapers here aren't too bad.

In our newspaper today, the big headline that caught my eye was that Illinois minimum wage is going up a dollar at the beginning of the year! Thats great news and it very much excites me! Now, starting Jan 1, our minimum wage will be $7.50! But, along with that, Im sure prices of everything else will rise as well....

I keep trying to respond to this but always get "internet explorer can't display this page"
The headline now (Sunday morning at 4:25am) is about Norway offering defence assitance (fighter jets etc) to Iceland since the US navy has left.
Local news is mostly about traffic accidents and snow storms.

They weren't joking about those storms! Everything is covered in snow now so this morning (Sunday) the headlines were mostly about how much snow there is and how everyone who went clubbing downtown last night had trouble getting back home. The rescue teams have been extremely busy but I haven't heard of any bad accidents or anyone getting hurt. Guess we have to expect snow when we live in Iceland.

I did check on www.ananova.com earlier today to find a headline to post on here but the news I found there I thought deserved it's own discussion. It was about a 7 year old girl in florida robbing a Wal-mart store at knifepoint. You can see the whole article in my previous discussions.
