MANILA, Philippines - A father of 3 lost his life after he refused to give his Nokia 3210 cell phone to thieves in San Pablo, Laguna, police said Monday.
Police Superintendent Raul Bargamento, San Pablo police chief, said victim Michael Clarianes, 27, was resting with a friend near Sampalok Lake when three cellphone thieves approached them and declared a holdup.
He said Clarianes was stabbed 13 times after he tried to fight off the thieves. His friend escaped the incident and alerted police.
The three suspects were later arrested but denied the crime.
Clarianes left behind a wife and three children.

OMG I can't believe it!! THREE suspects will kill one's life over a 3210 phone?? Is Philippines really that poor???:( What do you think?? What's worse is that this situation is seemingly "normal" to us.. How do you think can we, as a country, solve this problem??
My heart breaks

It is a heart-breaking story. I saw it on news this evening, and I just can't believe that a person have to die for a cellphone, regardless if it was a 3210 or an iphone. It's material things, we can always get a new one. But your life, it cannot be replaced,... I have always told my friends and family that when you are in that situation, just give what they want, cause your life is more important than whatever is it that they are asking materially.

I agree. :( It's really sad that the person has to die :(
Anyway let's just pray for justice and for his soul to rest in peace :( this evening really made me sad because of the news.

I guess that is the best thing to do.. To just pray for his soul. And also to pray for his family who had lost a father and a husband for just a cellphone. I hope that this won't happen again.

Are they sure that he was killed because of just a 3210 phone? I don't believe it. Even the thieves can buy 3210 second hand phone now. What I strongly believe is someone ordered these 3 men to kill him. Maybe there are quarrelled involves here and they took revenge about it. Anyhow, when I will be a victim or I hope not, even if my phone is so expensive, I will not sacrifice my life over that material. I will give it if that's what they wanted, just let me escape from it. If only the police is doing their job, thieves will be really afraid to do their job isn't it?

I agree.. =(
your beliefs may be right, but whatever the right angle is, people should value life in all its form.. =( I don't know what's up with these three criminals, but they should know that killing should not be an option in case they're really mad at the victim. =(
thanks for your insights grecychunny..

That is absolutely ridiculous. There is no excuse for killing another human being (there are a very small number of exceptions), especially one as ridiculous as killing them for a moile phone that isn't even anything special. These animals don't deserve to e part of civilised society

He could have just given up his cellphone and spared his like in the process. He could easily buy a new 3210 if he is alive today. This is true, but i think this kind of message is sending the wrong message to the robbers. this kind of message will make them even more daring, since every time they rob they expect to get what they want with out any hesitation on the part of victim. Adding to the fact also that enforcers are not that effective in catching the culprits. I guess everyone has become apathetic that news like this hardly stir any emotion from everyone. Of course, we pity the victim but other than that nothing. News like this should stir anger in everyone because this could happen to anybody, we just don't know when. Life should be priceless but in this case i think we are portraying to the world that it costs only 300 hundred pesos and no one is lifting a finger about.

I agree ybong :( there could many be effects with this news report.. it can be sending wrong messages to the robbers, and it can also add fear to others.. :( It's just sad that everyday incidents like this are becoming a norm especially in our country. :( I don't believe our country isn't that desperate.. probably, as previous responder said, there can be a different angle to the story.. it could be that the three men was ordered to kill the victim.. or there could be other story.. however, whatever that is killing should not be the option!! :( people nowadays just don't give value to life in all its forms =( abortions are everywhere, and the massive killings, massacre like that of the Maguindanao.. i just can't stand it!! i hope the next president will take action of these things especially that authorities have more influence and power over the country.. :(
God bless the Philippines and the world!! that's all I can say..

It's sad when life is lost over such useless things. What is the world coming to? Over a phone? Just take the phone and leave the person be. No need to kill over something so stupid.

I know it's really sick. I saw this on the news at TFC last night. A lot of what if's and he should've came across my mind, but then again, I don't really have a say because I have no idea what it's like to be in his or his family's situation. As you've said, maybe a lot of people in the Philippines are that poor, I guess. It's sad really. I can only suggest ways to solve the problem but these suggestions have surely been suggested before by other people, so for now, I'll just pray about it.

A lot of news nowadays are so frustrating. I don't know what comes to these peoples' mind and do crimes like that over a material thing. While it's true that most of the Filipinos are fond of mobile phones, I think it's not a good reason to kill or do something bad to your fellowmen. What could be the bottomline for this?

I don't know.. but the fact that things are getting worse authorities should do something about it since they got more power than the rest of us.. sadly most of them are still going about their wrong ways like graft and corruption =(
God bless the Philippines and you take care too =)

The people that did that to the man don't deserve any good out of the whole ordeal. That is sad what happened to the man, and over a dang phone!!! Even if the country is poor that is totally unnecessary. This is what people have come to? Killing each other over petty items. I feel bad for the mans family. How can we solve this problem? I don't know. Maybe the countries should try treating their people a little better and give them more opportunities in life.

I've seen people killed over a lot less and I live in the unitaded states. I find the story heartbreaking and quite shocking. But at the same time I can't say I'm not suprised. I think the country needs to re-think their standards and law enforcment if crimes like this are considered "normal". That's just plain wrong.

I agree... though the citizens should act independently I think most of the responsibilities rest upon those in power.. they have more influence over people and it saddens me that some of them still continue doing their wrong ways like corruption that's why these things happen.. :( God bless us all!! Sorry I just can't stand it..

i have watch the news about that last night and i feel sorry for the family of the victim..wherien only a cheap unit of phone can break all of there dream because they are just dependent on that person because he is the one who makes money for there living and if i were in that kind of situation i would not risk my self in fighting back wherein i feel i dont have enough power to defeat three bad guys with knife i will just give my cellphone anyway cellphone can be buy again but our life is only one.

How low can one get! Just for a phone, you take away the life of someone? That's a big, big sin. People who do this should be punished severely because they do not have any regard for life. A cheap cellphone in exchange for one's life? That is so low!

i was really sad when i watched that news on TV Patrol. some people are already too desperate because of being enslaved in poverty. imagine, they are willing to kill someone considering the fact that a 3210 cellphone only costs 300 pesos.what a shame to our country.=(

It's both a shame and a reality!! :( Authorities should do something about it since they got more power than the ordinary concerned citizens!! :(

Wow, a piece of heart-breaking news! Life is much more precious than a cell phone! How could the thieves do this? Are they thieves or robbers?
And we're also taught to give up our belongings in this situation, maybe it's safe, but it makes crimes growing. I think police must do something to improve it. To make our live safely instead of coming to terms crimes.

I just saw that news earlier at TV Patrol. Yes! It was truly a sad, sad story. Made me think that our country is getting worse everyday because of poverty. I remember last year (or the other year, I think) that a woman just went shopping in Divisoria cut her ears off because a snatcher took her earrings.
Nevertheless, despite of all these horrible news we still must have faith in our country that somehow (I don't know when and how) things will change for the better... haaayyyy sana....

I agree.. heart breaking indeed :(
What's worse is that there are "three suspects" in that incident :( I really feel sorry for his wife who's now left with the three kids. :( I hope the next President can solve worst situations like this.. :( I don't believe the Philippines is poor. It's just corruption and lack of education. :(
