There are so many places that I want to see. Italy, England, France, Scotland and Ireland are on my short list but I've also been intrigued by the Croatian coast. We're hoping to go at the beginning of July and to return in mid September. Any places that we shouldn't miss? We will be traveling on a budget and we LOVE the water so we would like to include as many coastal areas as possible. Of course we know that we have to visit London, Paris and Rome. Any thoughts or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I give you a recomandation. I am from Romania, a beautiful place in Europe. You must come to our Black sea it's really nice, or you could visit Dracula's house, or our mountains (we have a lot of ski slopes). Ooooo, and you must come in Suceava, a wonderful city in Romania, to see the Fortress of Suceava it's amazing. Think about it, this trip will worth every cent. ;)

You're the second person to recommend Romania and I'm going to research the possibility of visiting. Dracula's house would be a fun sight to see. Thanks for the response

If you come to England, make sure you visit more than just London. I live down in Devon and that is a really beautiful part of the world - and there are LOADS of water based activities you can take part in here and in Cornwall.
Also, if you go to Italy, make sure you visit Florence and Sienna - such great places.
And I love the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona by Gaudi - loads of his buildings that you can visit in the city.
Have a wonderful time - I'd love to travel around Europe!

I'm not a fan of big cities when I travel but I will have to visit London. I've always been much more fascinated with smaller towns and being able to mix with the locals so that I can get a real feel for the flavor of a place. I think that I mentioned in an earlier post that I've wanted to see the English countryside ever since I read my first Miss Marple mystery.

If you like Miss Maple style places then you need to go to the Cotswolds. It's really pictureesque - proper Engligh, towns. Olde Worlde and lots of nice english tea rooms! You'll love it!

I have been to Paris and I didn't find it as fasinating as everyone makes it sound. Could have been because I was younger (14). I found Germany to be the most beautiful place of all that we visited. Black Forest was just beautiful! I couldn't even put it into words. I also really like Hidleburg, Germany. It has the castle there we went through and it was just amazing to see. I would go back to Germany in a heartbeat just wish I could afford it.

I've heard that said about Paris before but it may have been your age. When I graduated from high school, a group of us got a trip to New York City as a graduation gift. I hated it and couldn't wait to get home. Fast forward 20 years later when I had to go to New York on a business trip. I decided to take a couple of extra days of vacation as well to do a little exploring. About three days into the trip, I called DH and told him that I didn't want to come home! It took those 20 years and my interests to develop more to appreciate the city. Thanks for your response.

Switzerland looks stunning, but I don't know if it is possible to travel there on a budget. I think it's about as expensive as here (Norway), which means it is very expensive. If you want to see the Alps as cheap as possible you should go from the Italian side.

If you're considering Croatia, you should also visit Slovenia. It's a small country (2 million people) and you can get from one end to another in two hours. There is a lot to see, from the capital, to the mountains and the sea, because we have everything :D. And all you need is a day or two.

DH's heritage is partly Slovenian. I'm so ignorant about that part of the world that I didn't realize that they were so close. Thanks for the tip.

Good for you! My top European must sees would have to be Paris(we all know the many sight sees it offers), Italy (because of Rome and Naples plus the beauty of the country side) and Greece (because of Santorini's must see beach which is sure to blow you away!) Try checking out contiki.com. They cater to a lot of European trips be it backpacking or luxurious:)

I am sure you will enjoy your travel. It is expensive though to travel in Europe. The countries in Europe are rich in culture.
Good luck with your travel. You will be travelling for more than two months, that means you will be spending much too.
Anyway, I hope you will have a good time travelling.

Have a great time. If you get the chance, visit Germany! That is one of the most beautiful places I have ever gotten to experience. The food is amazing too and the castles are breathtaking.

DH was stationed in Frankfurt and our son was born on a military base there so Germany is definitely on our list. A very good friend of mine lived near the Black Forest so we're going to try to make it to that area as well

One of my daughters has traveled throughout Europe, including living and studying in Spain. When I asked her which was her favorite country to visit she said Austria. She thought it was lovely and distinctive. I was surprised at her answer but thought it was interesting. If I were visiting Europe I would want to visit the cities but would try to work in seeing some of the countryside as well, especially in Ireland and France. I lived in France as a pre-teen and have more vivid memories of the Loire Valley than of Paris. Planning this trip must be so much fun for you....Enjoy!

I'm much more of a fan of the out of the way, non touristy places when I'm on vacation but since this is a once i a lifetime vacation, I have to hit the big cities as well. I've wanted to visit the English countryside ever since I read my first Agatha Christie mystery. A friend took a hot air balloon trip through the French countryside and the pictures were fabulous so that's also been something I thought that I would enjoy.

I always thought that California was the most expensive place to live but when I checked out apartments in Paris, it was eye opening. Upwards of $4,000 a month for a small apartment that's well located.

Recommendations *hmmm* You'll be travelling at the same time as about everybody else, so for the most popular places you should book a place to live in advance so you get something nice and cheap and not just cheap. For places like Louvre and the Sixtinth chapel, be there when they open or check with the locals if there's any time you don't have to queue for hours. When I was in Rome, we went to St Peters late in the afternoon and had the place nearly to ourselves. Really nice. We tried to get into the Sixtinth chapel the next day, but the queue was about 100 meters long so we decided to go look at some nice Roman ruins instead :-)
My favourite city in mid-Europe is Vienna, it's lovely, just about the right size and if you go there in the summer you can go to square in front of the City Hall and watch operas on a big screen for free while getting some nice, free food. Also, if you love water, you can take the train to Bodensee. It's a very shallow lake, big, filled with reeds but you can rent one of those pedalling boats and go out into the middle of it for a swim. It's so shallow that is is warm even in cold summers. And it is easy to get to Croatia from Vienna. You can for example take a boat down the Danube parts of the road.
If you have time enough when in Scotland, I would go to one of the islands (Orkneys, Hebrides etc). It's really nice, quite different than the cities and lot of interesting stuff to see. On mainland Orkney you can get 5000 years of history in two hours.
Bring a rain jacket! Especially to Scotland. Umbrellas are just not good for travelling + rain + wind.

Do it. The only times in your life that you will live in another country is when you're young and have nothing to lose or when you're old and are too old to do anything anyway (LOL!!!) I've always thought that I would like to live in Ireland, Italy or Portugal. Ireland and Italy because that's my heritage. Portugal who knows? Perhaps this trip will be the impetus to make that happen!

I love the Croatian Coast. I suggest that you visit Dubrovnik and some of the islands like Mljet. I loved going to some of the smaller places and found them all really pretty.
I love the cities of Prague, Budapest, Salzburg, Lisbon and Istanbul. In the Czech Republic I adore Cesky Kromlov. I liked going to Venice in Italy because it is unique and very beautiful.
I suggest you get a train pass. Your route could be something like London to Paris to Rome to Venice to Lake Bled and then down to Croatian Coast. Next you could visit Vienna, Cesky Kromlov, Prague, Budapest and Salzburg. Then you will have visited England, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary. There are some budget airlines in Europe that you might find useful if you fly into London for example.

Make sure that you have a way of checking in with the folks back at home so that they won't worry about you. My Mom and her sister take a trip every couple of years and on their trip to Scotland the emails back to Mom's husband were not getting through and he had the whole Scotland Police Force out looking for them. It was resolved peacefully and no one got hurt but it sure put alot of people to unnecessary trouble. Now they make sure to have two or three back up plans to make sure that he stays informed.
