I have a friend, he is expert in computer, he knows everything about computer, he has so much knowledge regarding computer. Among our friends , if any have problems with their computer then we'll always ask for his help. He learned all about computer by his own, from books, never goes to college. He thinks that title is not important. But I find that he has problem to get a job to teach computer in several recognised school, because he has no certificate. Since he likes computer so much, now he is willing to go to a far and away island so called hinterland school , which is far from our town, to teach computer. Although I respect his decision, but I still think he can get better than this because his has so much knowledge of computer. So this question always come into my mind. Will you share your view?

I think he will be effective in teaching computer to the young generation so he can impart his knowledge. He will go to hinterland to teach & be accepted for what he is.I also think that he can study over again while he is teaching computer so that he can earn degree or computer certificate and also to upgrade his knowledge about computer.

Sooner or later in his life he will get realize it in his journey life.Maybe you can say to yourself you know everything in computer but not at all.Getting an experience in computer is okay but he must also think his future.Regret is always in the end.Happy Mylotting & Happy Valentines!!! For many years I worked at a community college and was responsible for hiring computer technicians, systems analysts and network personnel. I had a staff of over 40. When we had openings in our department I was prohibited from even calling someone in for an interview who did not have some kind of educational background in the field. I looked at many applications from many obviously bright and talented individuals who had the skills I needed but did not have the certifications or academic background that proved they knew what they claimed to know. So, yes, certification or real life employed experience is important when you're competing for a job. No employer is going to risk taking your word for it and, unfortunately, the usual hiring process does not allow you to prove yourself beforehand.

Yes....it is the cruelness of real life...what to do? we have to follow the regulations, everything that already set for us to just follow it....(sigh...) that's why parents always want their children to achieve higher education to get a certificate....anyway my friend is very optimist ...he says he can earn his own living in this field even without any academic certificate, and he is happy to be his own boss, and still can be keep contacted with computer to be a freelancer, so as long as he is happy...why not?

Who knows? Your friend may do very well! As long as he's happy is the most important element in my opinion. That's one of the reasons why I left that job and the stress associated with it, and where we were living, and ran away to Florida with my husband. We're still very happy 6 years later.

Most of the time, experience is the best thing. You learn so much just from doing things. But if you're going to teach others, you need to be credible, and sometimes the only thing that can give you that is a piece of paper.

Hallo friend...I never doubt that experience is important...I also believe that in field like computer or technical things , experience comes first......but if you are being employed than I dont know why people insist on the cert must be come first....thanks and happy mylotting!!!

Hi asanlee,I think academic certificate and experience will go together in having a good Job.Experience alone won't work, because now a days all the companies or establishments really looks for certificates or TOR upon applying for a job.Have a nice day!

Both are important. Without Academic certificate you can't participate for interview for get a batter job. And without experience you will not get the job as you don't have the idea. So we need both. But for me i think experience is more important what your friend have.

Yes...usually most of us think experience is more important, but in real situation...certificate comes first...some new graduated without experience will be given training after they are recruited. and those with experience without certificate not even given a chance to step in the company....am I right? I think you'll agree with me....Thanks , Happy mylotting!!!

You know asanlee, the story of your friend matches completely with me. word by word and line by line. My friends call me a computer expert, ethical geek and so much more haha Currently, im reading in college and ive been a enthusiast since my childhood days. often wondering how computers were working, how the games were made and all those stuff. The only difference i find between me and my fellow friends is, i learned through computers, they trusted their books. See, books can never give you what experience gives you.Experience is real, youve seen it, done it on your own, its practical ! books only tell you what the author tries to. hence your knowledge is limited. Speaking of my story, i was never regarded as a good computer student by any of my teachers. mainly because i didnt used to do all the stupid things they used to tell me. while they talked about mouse and keyboard, i talked about pixel and vertex shaders.so they usually thought i was showing off. Next comes college, the computer teacher still thinks im a ZERO in computers. however, as they say, when you have some real raw talent, it just sparks out. it did. even if i speak less, around 90% of my college mates take their computer advice from me today. my friends know what kind of a "bad in computers" guy i am. recently, i was talking with one of the known animators of our city. he had launched an animation institute recently and the talk was about the pc itself. the moment he finished talking with me, he called me and said me "why dont you come to my office tomorrow", so i had gone to their office today. and then there was a small discussion on SLI and graphics card. and what next? i was immediately given a part time job. now i dont need to depend on my father for money. ive got prestige, reputation among some of the best people to hang out with, ive got friends who believe i know something more than their teacher and that they can reply on me. And all these was because of Experience, my friend not Degree or book knowledge. Now do i need to give a damn to those teachers? you say :) And as far as the question of your friend goes, you will yourself see him one day..and then you will think "what a lucky guy". because ive seen the world....i know how it starts..i know ... think again, maybe your friend gets a teaching job after trying really hard..next what? once he quits his first job, the employers will seek only experience not any kind of degree. And always remember..book knowledge is fake, its cheap, its vague, its humbug. only the knowledge you gain by experience is pure knowledge.

Hallo...friend....I can see the similarty between you and my friend....you are both so energetic if talking about computer, and your childhood story remind me of him...quite similar....only that he is not as lucky as you...he has no chance to go to college, he hasn't met someone that give him chance to shine.....or maybe not yet...I hope one day he'll be in great success....Thanks for your sharing...happy mylotting!!!

I'll go for "Experience" for academic thing, Some graduated in college knowing just a little thing about their profession and when it comes to job, you always start with Training. so that means your are still going to learn something that YOU didn't know. It's just the thing is you can be called and hired immediately because you had this academic background on your profile that makes them interest. for experience persons, They do and I know that they can work better than a person with academic background, it's just that the company wouldn't call them because they have no academic background on their profile, so if I'm in this situation, of course I'm not gonna aim the large company and I'm not gonna expect a large amount of salary, instead I'll go for a small job, finish the contract look for another higher expect a promotion, since the job your taking is based on your experiences and expertise like computer or anything, discovering your talents from the higher ups isn't a problem ^_^

The skill and experience is the most important. But you also need the academic certificate for the purpose of your promotion of rank or position.

HI asanlee, someone said that "There is no education like experience" and I think this is very true, we can't learn anymore from other ways like experience we can forget the knowledge of books but never forget which learn by experience. But in this age the academic certificates are more valuable than experience, even though your friend has a lot of knowledge but he hasn't no certified for that then no one recognize him, I remember one story about Mr. A.P.J. Abul Kalam (Former president of India and a great scientist) once he applied in an organization for job but he hasn't eligible certificates for that job so his application was refused then he became the president of india and automatically became the chairman of that organization too. How funny was this.

Let's say,Academic certificate is just a paper to admit your good performance in a specific area. But It's important. In respect of experience or the skill,I think they are the most crucial parts though they cannot be proven by a paper. What we need more when we go to work,I think it's about your work experience and the related academic skills.

i think both of that are important to person , because acadamic certificate is a fundamental values to your self and the experience is the your skill to the things better and have a knowledge on that experience.

Hallo...although we know both are important but usually we'll look at the cert first . We will treat the cert as somekind of measurement to the qualification in certain field of someone. So do you agree with me that most of the companies will based on the cert to employ someone rather than experience? Thank you for your response ...happy mylotting!!!

The Answer depends on the specific job requirments and the field. The case for experience is like this: Companies want someone who has done the job or one like it before. This will give the company or business more assurance that the canidate will be successful than simply hearing the right answers to interview interview questions. An academic certification may give an edge for a computer position, though results are what matter most and companies dont recieve results from a graduate program. Thoght, there's room for exceptions. If a if the company is calling on highly educated computer progamers of techs. Did you know that some companies place premiums on having a lot of worker swith graduate dregrees and someone wit out one may not fit in.Finally i would state that i all depends!!!

Hallo...I think almost all the big companies , recognised school/college will hire someone with qualified certificate...no other exception. Unless is a small company and the boss knows you personally then he /she will hire you although you dont have a cert, but plenty of experiences. But it is really hard to find such opportunity.....Thanks for your response. Happy mylotting!!!
