My Gissi has come a long way

I was sat here yesterday thinking how far my little Gissi has come
As you all know Gissi had to stay at the Vets on Monday and I was worried and hoping he would get through things but I was also worried in case it knocked his security again
A little background on Gissi so you understand what I mean
5 Years ago when I was officially registered as Disabled, my Son and Daughter 6 months later decided as I was not able to work any more I should have another Dog, as our Lab had passed away 8 months before
My Daughter got me to go to the Kennels with her to have a look at some Puppies, they where cute, but I was still to down about the on goings over the past Year, my Marriage break and also the loss of my Job because of an Illness I got Diagnosed with, being told I will never work again hit me hard, being told about my Illness hit me hard and a few other things went on at the same time, so when my Daughter went of to look for a carer I wondered into another part of the Kennel, at first I did not see him, I asked the Lady if there was one in there, she said "Yes, there is but he is very scared, even we can't go near him" She told me that the Police had brought him in 3 months before, he had been half beaten to death and their Vet was surprised that he pulled through, but he was so scared he would not go to anyone at all he would back of
I sat there and talked to him, he was so tiny, after 20 minutes of gently talking to him he slowly made his way towards me, I then put my hand through to stroke him he put his little head in my Hand the Care taker was shocked and surprised, I decided Gissi was coming home with me, she asked if I was sure as they had no background, no age nothing, I said I do not care I want him, so he came home with me
The Care takers where so happy, as 2 weeks Later Gissi would have had to be put down if he found no Home
It was hard and long love, caring, winning his trust, he learned that not just me loved him, that no one would hurt him again
He hated it if I was not about, I could not leave him anywhere as the Fear was there
4 1/2 years later he loves everyone, he is adorable, have been told by Vet, going by his teeth he now 61/2 years old, he is full of fun and just wonderful
So when I knew he had to stay at the Vets I was worried that he would get scared having to go into a cage again and being surrounded by other Dogs, as I thought it would bring back memories of the Kennels, that he would think I have deserted him to, but he didn't, he was fine, he was fine because he has learned that I will always be back for him, that I will not desert him, that he fully trusts me, a couple of years ago that would not have been the case
I am so proud how far this little Boy has come, that he has learned to trust me the way he does now
I have always had rescue Dogs and they all learned to love and trust and put their fears aside, turned out to be the most loving Dogs
All it takes is Love, care and giving them back security, it has hard work yes but worth it every time, to see the poor Babies recover from the bad part at the start of their Life's

What a truly delightful inspiring story!!!! Thank you for sharing it with us!! I think that God put you and Gissi in the right place at the right time since you both needed each other and are both stronger, happier and healthier for it! He truly sounds like a blessing!!
Whenever one of my pets has to do the dreaded Vet overnight, I send them with a t-shirt that I have worn so they have my scent close by and a favorite toy. I think it makes alot of difference as they can remind themselves that they are loved and you'll be back for them.
I'd love to get another dog in time, I am going thru a break up and my Mocha went with him since I had given her to him as a gift. I wasn't raised with dogs so Mocha was my first experience being a dog mama. And I was rather amazed at just how much of a dog person I have turned out to be. I adore my 2 cats but they are so different from a dog. And like you, when the time is right, I will go to a shelter and find a dog there. Take good care of yourself and Gissi!!!

Hi Tally
I am so sorry for your break up
All my Dogs have always been mine as I am the Dog Person I did grow up with Dogs and have had Dogs always
I hope you do find one, but it is hard work, love patience and care when they have been badly treated, but I am sure you will do it
They need so much love and care and learn to trust again

Tally Cats are loving and sweet to but a Dog gives so much love and loyalty, helps you through
When I was married and with what I went through I used to sit with my Dog then and talk to him and he would always listen and put his head on my Lap
I hope things will settle for you Tally it is tough I know but be strong and get through it

I think that I've always thought of myself as a Cat person since I was raised with them and you were raised with Dogs so are more of a Dog person!
I completely agree that to help a dog recover from a troubled past will take tons of love and patience and understanding. That's another reason why I have to be in a more grounded place than I am now. Once I have gotten back on my feet, I will be looking to add a new addition to my pet family. My 2 cats keep looking for Mocha since she was the one who usually started the running around the house games! I think they miss her as much as I do. My ex used to go out of town for business so they haven't caught onto that part yet. Heaven help me when they do since they adored him....One day at a time for me...
I now know exactly why many folks say the Dog is God backwards since there is a wonderful loving nature that dogs have that is so unique and special. Don't get me wrong about Cats tho...I love them too!!
So nice to read about a rescue success when there is so many animals that don't have that chance! Be Well!!

I remember Gissi's background, but reading it again just now, brought it all back into my mind, and I think you were meant to be there that day at the kennels - Gissi must have been waiting for you. It was meant to be. You are so made for each other!
You helped him to regain his confidence and taught him how to love again - what a wonderful gift you gave him Gabs. Yes, you are right, he has come such a long way.

Dang it Gaby, it's been a while since I've read a story that actually made me cry. I'm sure you're exactly right and that he did so well at the vet because he has learned to love and to trust again. Good for you. I hope the two of you are together for many years to come!

To Gabs and Gissi ... with love
He layed on the floor,
He woke up to see you.
He did not know what you were thinking,
Maybe you will be able to save him.
The moment you looked into him
And stared into his eyes,
You saw his fear
So much things you wanted to share,
Its like we are both in desert.
Not one single soul to be found.
Not one single person that care.
As the world goes round.
Lifes been unfair
We did nothing wrong.
We did no harm to others.
Is there a future for us ?
that stare !!it shouts out for help.
that gaze !! looks out for love.
I put out my hands to you
You gave my hand a lick
as you held him in your arms
You swore you would never let him down,
You swore you would take care of him,
You swore to love him until the end.
How he learned to love life,
You have convinced him to sleep in peace
As tomorrow he will see you again
Everyday he will see you again
4 1/2 years later,
We are no more alone,
as we have lots of fun!!
Yes Its me Gabs and My buddy Gissi
cheers

Sanjana, this is such a beautiful and heart felt poem. I know gabs loves it and I'm sure she has read it to Gissi too, lol. She feels about her baby the way I do about mine. They are a huge part of ours lives and one of the main reasons that we keep on going.
It was so sweet of you to write this for them.
I love it, and it is with so much feeling and emotion. Thank you for my friend gabs and her Gissi.

So you and Gissi are the best of friends....and understand the love and caring you have for each other....I find it hard how people don't understand that type of thing....very hard! What a touching story gabs, I'm on the verge of tears.
You both were so lucky to find each other, and look at you both now...the best of friends. That's just so wonderful and I love to hear stories like that. Gissi is full of trust now and I'm sure they treated him very well at the vet's too, which helps. All those people love animals so much, and the animals all know it.
I'm glad you two are together, it was just meant to be.

aaaww! what a beautiful story. i know just what you mean. everyone should go to the pound or aps to get their pets. its like they always appreciate our care and love more. all mine came from there until coco, but she would have ended up there likely because i went and got her from my youngest sons house when he went to jail 5 yrs ago. shes about 6yrs now. i would just not give her back as he did not know how to treat her at that time. he'd go party and stay gone for hours and then wonder why she had accidents on the floor now i know my oldest son here will take good care of her but i often worry about if she will think i just left her if i die i just dont feel anyone will love and pay attention like i do. im sure you have the same concerns.

I understand your Concern and yes sometimes I do worry about that but not very often as I have no intentions of doing that Bunny, I just live day to Day now, I used to be scared of dying even when I was younger I used to wonder what would happen to my Children
Now it is very rare I thing about it because I worry myself
over The Children and Gissi
I know both mine would have Gissi without a doubt, and they both love him very much but as you say we have a special way with them and that would not be given by any other Person

I have a hard time with leaving my kitties at the vet. Creamery definitely needed dental help, but he was so scared when I came to pick him up that he would not let anyone but me get him out of the cage. He does not mind car rides, but on the way home he just wanted to sit in my lap as I drove. That is difficult. It has been a couple of days now and he is back to his cute and cuddly self. His mouth still hurts, but both of my boys are beginning to have mostly home cooked foods. You can tell how content they get when their tummies are full.

It doesn't seem all that long ago when you were taken off and Gissi was left. He just about went berserk and then he wouldn't let you out of his sight. He has learned since then to trust you even more than he has done from the beginning. He KNOWS he is important to you and that you would never leave him.
You two belong together. You share a lot in common, understand each other and depend on each other.

Yes Cloud that is true, I also remember how mad he was at me lol when I came back well to my Surprise he was not mad at me (oh maybe for the Manicure he was lol) yes he followed me about, but there was no sulking, ignoring me, give me the mad growl and the looks, none of that at all
As I expected, he is wondering why am I packing, his little eyes keep looking at me confused, I just sit and explain to him and I tell him he will be coming with me (he has packed his book and torch to as he does not want to forget them lol)
I am just so happy that I was able to give him this Life a Life of Love
I get all that in return from Gissi and that is what makes it so special
Big warm Hugs to you

They really don't REMEMBER the bad stuff.
That's not to say they don't remember the fear, they often do.
Heck, Taj sometimes remember the bad night in the tree with the storm - or at least he sometimes remembers being afraid during a storm.
I'm so glad that he's become the happy, confident dog he is, Cujo has fears, but at least he no longer has to fear that the big dogs are going to beat him up.

Hi Gabs.
I cannot for the life of me why anyone would ill treat any animals like that, they must be sick in the head, thank God you found Gissi in time too, someone up there brought the two of you together as you both needed each other to trust and heal again, since I got to knw your here, I have heard so much about the little boy and learn to love him too. It is so very hard for animals to trust another human being because he was badly mistreated, but he must have saw and heard something in you that he trusted you that day. I am so glad Gissi is much better after his vet visit, much love to you both always.

I am so glad you told your story gabs! You wrote it so well and I have tears welling in my eyes. As an animal lover I do not comprehend the cruelty inflicted on some animals and I am so very happy you gave little Gissi your love and the home he so desperately needed. It sounds as though he is very dependent on you and that is what you both need. He came into your life at a time when you both needed each other. I am pleased he is doing okay after his ordeal. He is still a young dog with a lot to live for now and something tells me that you and Gissi will be together for a long, long time yet!
