How Do You Take Your Medicine?

Someone once told me that it's better to take medicine with water rather than coke, tea, or whatever you might happen to be drinking at the time. She said that if you take medicine with anything other than water, it's no better than a sugar pill. Is this true? I have been taking my medicine with water ever since. However, I have taken it with other drinks in the past and it seemed to have helped just as well. I know there are certain medicines, such as Fosamax, for example, that you're supposed to take with water only. It might depend on the medicine. What are your thoughts on this?

I am a nurse by trade and it doesn't matter what you take a pill with unless otherwise specified as water anything will do to get the pill down. We also give meds in applesause, crushed with chocolate ----------------doesnt' matter, just get the pill into the stomach so it can start working.

If water works for you then go for it. I just stated that any liquid would do to get the pill down and start doing its job. The idea here is to follow directions and if the directions say take, then take with what suits you. If as in fosamax, says water only, then water only. It's hard for a lot of people , including me, to take pills. I gag. So do a lot of other people. The capsules , most of them are ok to open and pour onto food or in a drink. Some say not to crush, don't crush. But crushing and using applesauce or chocolate syrup is good esp. for kids and old folks like me !!!

Yes u have heard right. Unless specially told by doctor, all medicines should always be taken with water only. Most of cold drinks contain caffine and since we seldom know the contents of the medicine, it is best to avoid taking medicine with cold drinks. In some cases, like calcium etc. doctor do recommend that the tablet be taken with milk.

Hi vanitasuri! Thank you for responding. Fosamax is a calcium tablet and my pharmacist told me to take it with a full glass of plain water only. It might depend on the calcium tablet you're taking, though. I think it differs with different medicines and people, too. I think water not only helps you swallow your medicine easier but works better with the medicine as well. Kathy.

There are different kinds of medicines for different diseases. I suffer from ostheo arthritis as well as osteoporosis and am regularly taking daily dose of shellcall as well as Idrofos which is to be taken empty stomach once a month only. But during my recent visit to my doctor, he has prescribed one sachet of calcirol which again is to be taken once a month only, but with milk. I have been lazy and am yet to try out this vitamin.

hi cyrus sometimes I take it with water and other times in the morning the caregiver dumps my water out to fill the glass with orange juice and I am left to take my nine meds with my orange juice and I have read that is not the best way to take meds so guess I am going to have to get an extra glass and use water at all times. I take Fosamax too and half the time take it with orange juice, help. My thoughts are I need to keeo an extra glass of water in the mornings. lol

Some medicines and some vitamins actually are helped with a vitamin C food or beverage like orange juice. I would ask about the fosamax. On the other hand, there are lots of meds that you should drink EXTRA water with or at least a full eight ounces at the time. Grapefruit juice has the effect of making some medicines too much stronger, so the warning is not to take medicine with grapefruit juice. I am surprised that you do not have an extra cup or pitcher of ice water in your room at all times. Dehydration is one of the things that really afflicts people in care homes and most of the ones I am familiar with have a covered cup with a plastic straw and fill it with fresh cold water each shift. Pick them up and wash them each day.

I think it might be all right to take medicines with anything other than water if no water is available. I think water is the best and safest thing to drink it with, though. Some medicines you're supposed to take with water only. I've never heard of taking Fosamax with OJ. I would be afraid to try it with this, myself. When I first started taking it, my pharmacist told me to take it with a full glass of plain water only. That's just the way I've always taken it. Like GG, I'm surprised that the caregivers where you are don't make sure you have a pitcher of water in your room at all times. Maybe you need to protest about this, lol. Kathy.

I believe it's better to take medicine with water, too. It seems to work better that way, not just help you swallow it. I used to didn't think it mattered as long as you had something to get it down with. It might depend on the medicine and it might depend on the person. One mylotter has said that some people like to take medicine with a flavored beverage because they don't like the bitter taste some medicines have. I don't like the bitter taste, myself, but I can tolerate it. I feel like the water will get rid of the bitter taste, anyway. Kathy.

I've never heard of taking medicine with banana, either. I have heard of taking it with food and then swallowing it with water, though. I would prefer to eat a little bit of the banana first and then take the medicine. This is kind of weird the way you say she takes it. However, it's her business and if it works for her, then all power to it, lol. I always take my medicine with water, too, but I guess it depends on the person and the medicine. Kathy.

Even I don’t know the implications as because like you, I too have always swallowed my meds with water…guess, it makes the swallowing part easier LOL Once or twice, when I’m in a rush, I might just swallow it with the tea I’m drinking but since I couldn’t really gulp down tea, the med seems to have stuck inside my throat but then later all was OK

Of course it is the best way to take the medicine by warm water. It is not good to take the medicine by tea, soda water and so on. Perhaps the medical will have some chemical effects after drinking it. I love China

I never have taken medicine with warm water. I've just always used cold water. I've decided that medicine works better with water than it does with tea, coke, etc. Like I've been saying, before I started taking Fosamax, the pharmacist explained to me how to take it. She said to take it with a full glass of plain water 30 minutes before my first meal of the day. I take most of my meidicines with food, also. However, you're supposed to take Fosamax on an empty stomach. Thank you for responding. Kathy.

Hey cyrus! I really don't know if it matters or not! Sometimes I take my meds with water and sometimes I take it with my diet coke! I have never asked my doctors if it was ok or not or if it made a difference! I just assumed (which might not be exactly correct) that as long as I took them that it didn't matter! Most of the time I take them all with water, but there are times that if I am still drinking my diet coke I will just throw them in my mouth! I honestly never gave it a second thought! Maybe I should? I really am not that concerned! I am more concerned right now about what Lipitor is doing to my Liver! My doctor told me to get a Liver Value test because my last one the Liver Value was slightly elevated! So, if Lipitor is killing my Liver I don't think it matters what I swallow it with, do you?

Hi Kathy! I've taking Lipitor for over 15 years now. It is for high cholesterol. My doctor wasn't overly concerned, but I have to have my blood checked about every four months and the last blood test he said was slightly elevated. If it is again I guess he will have to take me off of it. I'm not overly concerned, but I will see what this next blood test comes out to and what he wants to do. Thanks for being concerned and I will let you know how it goes! Hugs, Leslie

What is Lipitor? I don't think I've ever heard of it. I hope it's not killing your liver! As I'm sure you already know, that's one of our vital organs. Anyway, I used to didn't think it mattered what we took our medicines with. It might depend on the medicine. I do believe they work better with water. I take Fosamax once a week and my pharmacist instructed me to take it on a full glass of plain water 30 minutes before my first meal of the day. Please let me know how everything goes with your liver because this concerns me. I hope you are doing okay. Kathy.

Well, my thoughts are diverse on this, what if you are supposed to take it with food. You had better do what the directions say, if they say water use water...I would think that coke would make your medicine work faster, because it dissolves it faster. Tea, because it is hot, again would dissolve it faster, which means it gets into your blood stream faster. I wouldn't think it makes it just a sugar pill. I would think it works the same either way, but if it gets into your system faster, or in a higher abundance of concentration, it could be a not good thing. I have this water additive, that states on right on it, consult a doctor before using this product if you are taking medication. and usually you can not have any medication for 3 hours before or 3 hours after drinking water that has been treated with it, because it increases the amount of stuff that gets absorbed into your system. Reducing waste, and giving your body a higher concentration of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from your food. I wouldn't take medicine with that water, I could over dose...well I guess it would depend on how bad my headache was. I appreciate you.

In this case, if it were me, I would probably wait about 3 hours after drinking this particular water before taking the medicine. Thank you for responding. Kathy.

Hey there, I always take my medication with water. But I think there have been a few occasions when I have taken them with any drink/fluid available. I think its best to take medicines with water, as most drinks have different chemicals in them.. be it coke, tea, coffee, energy drinks and so on. So you never know how it will react with the chemical composition of the medication. But that is just my take on it :)

It is true that people should take medicine with water only. Water could take the medicine inside your body without any chemical reaction unexpected. So it would be the safest way to take medicine. And it should be cautious especially when you are warned that some medicine can just be taken with water. And a sugar-coated pill is good in any case if it is an option, because the coat can protect the medicine until it gets into your stomach. And if the pill is stucked when it passes through the esophagus, it is not only unhelpful, but also it might burn your esophagus. And another tip is that a big mouthful drinking is much better than sipping for the protection of your esophagus.

I think it does depend on the medicine but anything will be better taken with water. Water dilutes your blood and helps the medicine pass through your system quicker. Soda ans such usually has sugars in it that can thicken your blood. Now with juice..it's different. Some juice can actually cause you to absorb more of the medicine than your actually supposed to. Like grapefruit juice..it's very dangerous to take certain medicines or pain relievers with it. OJ has absorbic acid in it too but not as much as the grapefruit.

I take my medicine with water ever since. I don't have any scientific explanation, it just makes the swallowing part easier for me. Water makes it easier for me to take my medicine. As compared with tea or soft drink, which makes it harder for me because of the strong after taste. I guess it depends on the person, too. Others like to take medicine with flavored beverage to disguise the bitter taste of tablets and capsules.

Yup, it depends on what type of medicine it is. Some will work only with water, others it doesnt matter. I take Atasol for my headaches and I havent noticed anything whether I take it with water or coffee, so it'll depends what Im drinking at the moment. Its always best to ask your pharmacist about the medicine you're taking.
