I was walking my dog this morning, and i happened to look down & right there before my eyes i see Money laying there in a Money Clip.To be exact $642.00 Now I have no idea who this belongs to, I figure someone was walking and just happened to drop it, Now i really want to Keep it but i would not feel right unless i try to find out who it belongs to...So really the only thing i can do to try to find the rightful owner is Let someone identify The money clip & How much money they lost. But i wanted to ask Everyones Opinion on this situation.Am i doing the right thing, Or is this out of my Hands??

You are so lucky
This may sound so greedy and selfish, but if I were in the situation you are currently in, I would keep the money personally. The chances of you finding the real owner is slim, and anybody could feed you a pack of lies to claim the cash for themselves

that's exactly my point, unless he found a wallet with six hundred forty six dollars in it, there's no way he can identify who's the owner of this money. a lot of pretenders will claim that for sure, they might even threaten him for it.

I say do what the First responser to this discussion suggested just with a twist. Instead of giving the money to the police, open a savings account with it and put the money clip in a envelope sealed and give that to the police department (DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT the MONEY )with your name/phone number so when I owner comes to check to see if someone turned in the money ONLY U & HIM/HER will know how much actually was there. This also helps keep "THOSE Tempted to Pocketing the CASH" from doing so.

the problem is that the police are just as likely to pocket the cash as anyone else. Police are not always honest. In fact, I've heard the police often still money on a persons that are turned in. This is why I find a purse I tried to contact the person directly rather than turn it into the police. It's a mistake to think the police are always honest.

I'll say it again. Since there's no way to find the owner, and the police can't be trusted, and even they wouldn't be able to find the owner, because the police would have nothing to go on more than what you said, I would keep the money. I would consider it a blessing from above. Or below. I wouldn't lose a night sleep over keeping it.

hello swagler,
I agree with the others, just notify the authorities and leave them your number or address. but there's a down side of that, if you don't have their proper identification then there's a chance that some one might pretend to be owning the money. better not let any one knew how much and let them know something else besides the money that you found.. that way pretenders wouldn't tempt to take the money because they will claim that it's their own.

In the UK where I live, you can take found items to the police, leave your name and address and if they are not claimed in a certain time, they become yours.
I don't know if it is like that everywhere.
The thing to do is imagine yourself in the persons shoes who has lost the money.
It could be someone who has just collected their wages and they have dropped out of their pocket , or someone who was going to buy something .
I think at least make an effort to look for the owner but if you don't find them, why shouldn't it be yours.

If it was me I would take it to my local police station. I found £20 on the path and there was a plice car nearby so I told them and they told me to phone police station. I did this and they said to wait a certain amount of time in case anyone claimed it and if they didnt I could keep it. I got to keep it. If I found a large amount of money I would not feel right just keeping it. At end of day if you do right thing, you will be rewarded later on somehow.

hello my friend, welcome to Mylot. The way i see you have a good heart, juice by you. If you know where or whose the owner for the money you should gave back to him but you don't know take it as your bonus because there no point to search for the owner if you don't know where to find him.

This is the right thing to do, because if you kept the money you would feel bad. You should return the money because the person who dropped it might need it for something important. $642.00 is a lot of money, and you're doing the right thing; a good thing.

Wow that' a lot swagler25! Well is there any other identity attached? I am sure the owner is within your vicity too... If somebody ask and look for it you better check if he is really the owner like ask him something about the money clip and the denomination perhaps... I am sure, the person who dropped that accidentally is lookiing and very worried already... We all need money, but if it is not us we better give it back... If you happened not to find the rightful owner, I guess, it is just fair to donate part of it to charity...

Wew nice amount!! But if i were u, i'd return it to the owner, of course, if i found the identity of the owner but if not, I'd leave it. I hope u'll do that. He/she may search for his/her money there. I'm pretty sure that the owner needs it, more, he/she deserves to get it back.

i think you're doing the right thing to do. imagine you are the owner, if i'm the owner i will sad couse that is my money and i get it with hard work and just lost. oh, it's hurting. imagine how much you can get with that money. imagine if the owner only had that money, what he/she will eat? if he/she want to use that money for medicine? or another urgent things. So you must the right owner.

if it was me i would consider myself very grateful to have found such a great deal of money and i would believe that it was god sent. i would keep it for a while if i cannot find who it really belongs to or if i do not see or hear anyone asking for it in the media.

It's hard to put possession on a wad of cash...I also find it difficult to imagine who would be that ridiculous as to drop that much cash on the ground...Either someone really rich or really stupid, or maybe both! Lol, but anyone could say they lost money, you can't tell who's telling the truth...I might ask around the area in which it was found, or maybe put up signs saying you found money and you are willing to give it back to whoever can prove its theirs (through a bank receipt saying $642 or by giving you that..even then it might be luck, which is why this is a sticky situation). Or you could donate it to charity if that would make you feel better than just simply keeping it.
