Screenplay is very important in a movie, in fact it is often called the heart of film making. A movie is judged sometimes based on sensible screenplay. Personally, I always go for a movie if it has a good screen play. Because that's the core of the film, if it has a bad script and screenplay then everything never go well.

The screenplay makes or breaks the movie. It is the most important piece of a movie. It is the foundation on which the entire film is built.

I think that screenplays are very important. Have you ever been to a movie with a good premise but it just didn't come off properly because the person just didn't know how to write? I have and I hate them. But given the fact that until they went on strike, writers in Hollywood got screwed really badly. I'm not surprised that a lot of screenwriters are not very good.
