...saying they don't fit, usually some days later? This could be a party dress (or something) from a catalogue, shop or maybe even the internet? The reason I ask is that I remember someone coming into the office many moons ago, telling everyone that she had picked an expensive dress from a catalogue, worn it over the weekend, then sent it back on the Monday saying that it didn't fit!! And yes, she did get her money back.Would you have the nerve to do this? I blush in a store even when my takeback is GENUINE lol. It's the same whenever I walk past a policeman or woman. I always blush!

I always buy checking the size and the adjustment of dress. I don't like to go the soap again and again for same purpose. I never buy anything alone. Specially when I buy dress I always have some friend with me. I believe that dress should wear on other choice. Other people know much more which dress is best to look at. I always use other choice in case of dress.

Yes, I think I know what you mean. Usually, I am quite good at buying clothes on my own but, whenever I need another opinion I take my Mum and vice versa of course. Mum is a lot more indecisive than me and I can take a look at her in a skirt (or whatever) and tell her what I think. She's bought some rather nice things after I gave my honest opinion about them.

I have not done that before, and I think I will not do that in future.
Actually I didn't have chance to buy like party clothes yet, but for me, you can try before you buy it, if you don't want it just don't buy it! And I have experience that I buy some clothes, and go home just don't like it but I just still kept it! Maybe My mom never do that, so I kind don't realize that I can return it.

Hello there! Another friend of mine would take forever looking at clothes in shops, got enthusiastic, bought something (after not trying it on) then she'd put it in her wardrobe, never to be seen again! I would try to encourage her to try stuff on but she never did.

your friends is a little eccentric. As for me, i should wear the new-bought clothes right after i paid the money. i think i buy the clothes to wear it, to beaufy myself, not just see it. In my opnion, a dress cannot be comsidered as "pretty" unless it makes me pretty.
So i always tries on many different clothes, and then select the most suitable one. I never return any clothes i bought!

That is very sensible my friend so I'm not surprised you don't have to take anything back. I have got to the stage whereby I only visit 2 shops that I know a garment will fit me without having to try it on, just by looking at it. However, since this weight gain I've not bought any clothes so I would probaby have to try them on in a fitting-room.

I have never done this personally, but I have a relative who was always doing it from stores and from catalogues. There is no way for the sellers to verify what has been going on, and they offer a refund if the clothes don't fit, so as long as all the labels are in place, I guess they have to live up to their promise. It is not something I would do though.. _Derek

He doesn't wear them with the labels on does he lol. That would be a tad embarrassing, especially if he didn't know they were there and were hanging outside, at the back. Mum's done that but, fortunately, I spotted them before she walked out the door!

i had that experience before. i used to work in clothing manufacturing before and they also owned various store or botique with different labels. in one branch, they have a customer from japan and she said shes a tourist in our country. the first time she said the dress did not fit to her so we exchange it then the secone time she said theres something loss in that dress and soon. the supervisor already have a second thought about the girl. one time, they saw the girl wearing the dress and the next day she went back again and return the item telling that theres a problem with it. but the problem was we already have pictures of her wearing the dress and we didnt even see any problem with the dress. shes into under investigation and we found out that shes also doing the same thing to the other store. in short, she bought then return and exchange the item so she can wear different dresses during her stay in our country. smart huh. but unlucky coz she need to pay it times 10 of the original price or she cant go back to her country bcoz of her case hahaha

everytime i have a party to go to, i always buy nice, expensive clothes
after i wore them i always bring it back to the store the next day.
i always think that its a waste of money if i dont bring it back cause i cant wear it the second time. i mean c'mon i cant wear it again cause people saw it already!

That's tacky. And you wonder why everything cost so much more nowadays. These stores have to absorb the cost of returns, shipping costs, the man hours of having to do these returns so a person can use it and return it. I would rather donate it to an organization than return it and be looked at funny when they know you used it and returned it. Plus do these people not wash the item before wearing it for long periods of time. Gross! Most stores now give you credit instead of money back if tags are not intact and definitely without a receipt. Anyway i would not do this. I do not want to wear something that someone else tried on without cleaning it first if intend to wear it. Therefore I would not return if I did. I would donate or sell it with a correct description to recoup some of my money back. For every action there is a reaction and it definitely hits our wallets at some point.

Actually, the story I told earlier was from the early 1980s and I have mentioned before that the clothes were far more expensive than what our wages could actually buy. I am not making excuses for the girl in question but she obviously wanted a dress NOW as opposed to paying for it on a weekly basis, to the catalogue. The dress must've fit her perfectly, she couldn't afford to buy it outright due to the extortionate prices of clothing, so she chose to return it. The difference being she wore it first. Some people will resort to desperate measures in order to look good but I take your point, we all have to pay for it in the long run. Many thanks for your response.

You are quite right, it's dishonest and wrong but some people do it because they know they can get away with it. The lady in my description only did it the once (as far as I know) because she ordered the dress via catalogue, couldn't pay for it as it was a posh party dress but decided to wear it anyway as she knew she could return it during the working week. I do know that our wages were miniscule then (early 80s) and clothes, by comparison, were very expensive. I know this through blogging my diaries from that era. In those days you HAD to be dressed up in order to get into a nightclub. I used to get dresses second-hand from a girl in the office. She had rich parents so her clothes were way more expensive than what her wages could buy. I would often buy her cast offs but I didn't mind because - like the girl I mentioned earlier, I couldn't afford the fancy dresses in catalogues but I found a way round it that didn't resort to being dishonest.

So do I my friend. I hate looking at myself in mirrors but sometimes it has to be done (in shops) in order to see what the dress, or whatever looks like, otherwise we are disappointed aren't we? We take the garment home, try it on, then have to take it back, which can be a bit of a pain lol.

Hi Jane,
i can't do that. if the dress does not fit me then i will return it at once. i will not make the impression that i am upset and frustrated that i was not able to wear it but actually i did. it's bad...no way!

Hiya Winky! You are quite right, it is a bad thing to do. Fortunately, this person didn't influence me that much (we both worked in the same office years ago) and she would do things to shock. Do you know what I mean? No-one took much notice of her to be honest, it's just that her conversation about the dress she wore stuck in my mind for some reason. It seems we are all the honest sort on MyLot and quite right too lol.

If I already worn the clothes it means that I already removed the tag. If the clothes doesnt really fit me why would I intentionally remove the tag? It only means that I intentionally worn it and changed my mind later to bring it back in the store. No, I never worn clothes and brought them back to the store.

How about catalogues though? My friend bought her dress from a catalogue so if tags were on it, she would've taken them off anyway in order to wear it. I couldn't do it though.

I have a cousin who does this. I call her Mrs Bucket lol. She had people over for dinner and wanted to impress them, so she bought new furniture, new dishes and of course new clothes for her and her husband. Her guests were over on the Saturday evening and on the next Monday, she asked to have everything returned and yes she was given her money back.
This is why I always wash new clothes before I wear them. You never know if someone wore them and returned them. I will return clothes if they dont fit or if they dont look good on me once im home. The lighting in a store is not the same as when you're home.
Im not shy to return something if thats not what I wanted. But not after I wore them. I dont blush when I walk past a cop lol.

Mrs Bucket as in "Keeping Up Appearances?" Class act she is lol. Fancy your cousin going to all that trouble and then having it all returned again. I really couldn't be bothered could you? I mean, what if one of her guests came round unexpectedly a couple of days later to say that they thought they'd left their bag behind or something. I'd die of shame lol. I don't know why I blush walking past coppers, I always try to avoid looking into their eyes. It's really silly!

Yes, it has happened to me several times. When I go to buy few clothe with my mother, she will tell that it is nice and buys it. But once when we reach home, she changes her mind and tell to exchange the clothes. I hate this type of situation.

It sounds like your Mum may be as indecisive as mine. Actually, she is OK with stuff I buy, but with herself...she's a nightmare and will only buy something if I tell her how wonderful she looks in it to reassure her lol.

Did you wear it first? Are you saying you want to take something back that you've tried on and it doesn't fit but there's not enough time to return it?

I ever been to a shop where they don't provide fitting rooms. The mentioned shop, allowed its customers to return the said goods within 14 days. I returned a pair of jeans just because the cutting don't suit me. I returned it the very next day although it written on the receipt that, the goods is returnable within 14 days. I think it's wise to return the purchased item as soon as possible when you found it don't suit you. I don't want to feel guilty of it.

Yes, I do know what you mean. There's no way I would return something after 14 days (or whatever the time period may be) as that raises suspicions in my opinion. The earlier the better I reckon.

No, I can't ever do that although I used to see it in the movies. I would order from a catalog, fit it when I get it and only return it to get a different size. I just wouldn't feel right wearing a dress for an occasion and then giving it back. Besides i'd be paranoid the whole time, thinking I mustn't spoil it. hehe.

Yes, that's exactly what I'd be like. Because I'm honest by nature returning something that I'd worn just "wouldn't feel right" as you said. I have often ordered a different size too.

Really? Wow, I never knew that. I've learned something else through a fellow MyLotter.I don't know what the returns policy is in stores in this country but I think the maximum is 28 days, so long as the receipt is produced with the item in question.

NO I don't do it nor would anyone in my family do it. I think that is not done, it bis like stooping too low.
Also here in India, mostly, once goods are sold seldom they can be taken back or exchanged, returned or money collected against returned - even if its a minute after you have left the shop and come back. And even big brands and shops, even if you find soemthing wrong may let you return the goiods but then you will have to pick up something equal to that amount.
And, by the way, I am too big as size goes for Indians, so I rarely get my size in ready made, I always have mine made to order, considering the fact that tailors here atre not that expensive as compared toother Western countries, and I have bought ready made clothes off the shelf on my trips overseas but have never exchanged or returned them .

Yes, sometimes in this country (in smaller shops at least) one has to exchange the garment for another of the same value..or, worse still, the dreaded Credit Note lol. Mostly, though, the big stores will give you your money back and I'm sorry it is so expensive for you to have your clothes specially made. I do appreciate that we are not all the same size are we? Jeans, for example are always too long as I'm only 5ft 4ins tall, very frustrating!
