Holy socks..... what do you do with them?

Lately I noticed that most of my socks have holes in them. Some in the toe others at the heel part. I match the ones with holes with other holy socks as long as I can.. Sometimes they don't totally match but you can't tell if you're wearing pants. My mom always said "Make sure your underwear is clean and you don't have any holes in your socks" just in case you get into an accident and have to go to the hospital. At that point I wouldn't care about clean underwear and holy socks. So my question is....what do you do with your 1 holy sock if you run out of matches for the. I use mine for a dust rag, it works great. You just put your hand in it and dust away...Heehe

There´s a lot of need in the house for rags, be it socks or any other piece of cloth. It is incredible how much you can save in the long run by using them instead of buying the new clothes that are sold for different purposes. I keep a rag inside the car to clean the windshields and everything you need. I have one in my bathroom to wipe the mirror. I use them to give maintenance to the wooden chairs and tables in the living and dining room areas. I use shoe polish (the creamy one) for it instead of the several sprays that are sold now. Have a nice day!

You be amazed how many people donate there used socks to Thrift Stores. I like going to second hand-Thrift Stores but I don't want to buy my socks or undies there, maybe a bra though

I also give a lot of things to the lady who works at my daughter´s house. She´d be rich if it were´t for her family. As it is, she takes the clothes, junk of any kind and sets a place at a street market near her home. There she sells what hasn´t used for her many grandkids. I don´t know if there are thrift stores here but I´d rather give to people I know.

socks - blue pair of socks
Yes, there are a lot of uses for anything, be it socks or any item in the house. It behooves upon one's creativity to look for ways where it can still be make use of its usefulness. They can still be sewn and given to less privileged peoople. During cold nights, I wear socks and these holy socks come out useful for the purpose.

Hi missy; Great tip for additional use for holy socks. I will recall this when I am unable to find a good dust rag. Lol on your Mom's advice as I too have heard that from the same source. I must wear clean underwear. I change them everyday and as for holy socks.. well, it depends on the sock. If it is a wool sock, that I particularly favor, i will darn them. If it is just a regular sport or dress sock, which I wear most often, I toss them usually but not now. I am going to save them for 'drum roll please' .. a dust rag! Yes. This is perfect. Right now, I do not have any socks with holes. Recently, I sacrificed some of my good socks to make my toy pup some socks to wear inside her boots during the snow fall. They are really cute, warm and she actually likes them! Thanks again for this great Holy Sock tip!

Usually try to sew the hole up if possible. Otherwise I toss them or donate them to a place that will turn clothing & linens into rags so theyd bet used on way or another.

If I can fix it it'll add to the longevity of the item & save me a few $ buying something new. One has to do what one has to do weather it be the "nice" thing, "green living" or just to keep your finances in better shape.

Hi Missybear, I have a friend who's so obsessed about looking good and wearing a nice underwear and pajamas at night. she said that if there's an emergency it will not be embarassing to the rescue team because she's in her best. i used old socks for wiping the dust. it's absorbent.

Well, it happens to my socks often too and when one breaks I throw the pair straight to the trash box. Where I live is common having to take your shoes off when going into some restaurants, taverns, etc, so imagine if I have holes in my socks . Fortunately I know where to buy new and cheap ones

That would be embarrassing to have holy socks when you have to take your shoes off. I sometimes don't care though depending where the hole is I still wear them.

If the hole is in the lower part so nobody can see it is ok

I can think of many things, Computer screen cleaner, sew it up and use as mittens on kids, sew it up wear it, make sock monkeys!!! I love sock monkeys. I have to say that I hate holy socks because my toes always end up out the holy part. Then they get cold and I feel like there is ice in my socks.

If clean, I make a knot and I give it for my dogs to play. The other way to use it is to polish my shoes. If not clean, it goes right to the garbage can. I have also one bag of not matching socks.

Hi, missybear. I will use it as an extra sock if I have another one that has holes in it too. Or, I will just, wear it around the house without any shoes. If that option has ran out then I will just throw it in the trash when it gets really worn out.

I go through a lot of socks because I have to wear steel toe shoes at work. I hate it. I have yet to have a use for them but now that you have said that, I may try them as a dust cloth before throwing them out..lol..I always buy the same kind of socks so I don't have to worry about the matching thing

socks - a pair of socks
Hi Missybear, When the children were small, I used to sew the holy socks we had. I used them to store small toys that are scattered on the floor, mostly marbles. I also use them as rags, as most are saying. One good thing that I do with holy socks that I have sewn is to store inside the small soaps that are mostly ignored and left to stand. I place all small soaps together inside them, mostly laundry bar soaps, and it is so easy to hold it while you use and consume the small soaps together. I had, at one time, tried sewing holy socks into a ball and used it as pin cushion. It was nice!

Now that you mention it, I think I had my marbles in a sock when I was a kid.

The moment I find a sock with a hole in it, I instantly toss it in the trash I don't need to save it for any reason, as I already have more than enough cloths to wipe dust away from my computer and such.

I use them for dusting as well. I think it is so much cheaper to use them for dusting instead of throwing them away. Another thing one can use them for is to make puppets for small children. My cat Smyles tries to take them away and runs around the house with them.

I use mine and my husbands to wipe the tv and computers, and electrical stuff. You can also dust with them.. and if you're good with a needle, you could learn to darn them.

They work great for dust rags. I hate sewing so that's not an option.

Hi missybear, My Mother and my Grandmother always said that as well about clean underwear and no holes in the socks Strange one it is indeed. I have used the odd old holy sock as a duster a few times and they do work great. I could make some sock puppets if I put my mind to it and freak my friend out. I know this is going to be hard to believe, but he has an acute fear of sock puppets

I used to always just keep them in my drawer - so I can use it as a rag or whatever - but guess what - I never did anything with them!! So now, when I'm doing the laundry, if I see a sock with a hole in it - and I toss it. That way it's out of my hair and I never have to think about it - or make it clutter up my sock pile ever again. It's a waste, I know. But now that you mentioned that it makes a good dust rag, I might consider wiping a few items here before I totally toss it - hee hee!
