When I was studying towards a degree in graphic design I learned color psycology. It was very intereting to learn that black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black.
Many different colors can speak volumes for the person wearing them. Take a look at other colors and their psycological meanings:
White
Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility.
Red
The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.
The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.
Blue
The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.
Green
Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.
Yellow
Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.
Purple
The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.
Brown
Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.
Interesting fact:
Colors of the Flag
In the U.S. flag, white stands for purity and innocence. Red represents valor and hardiness, while blue signifies justice, perseverance, and vigilance. The stars represent the heavens and all the good that people strive for, while the stripes emulate the sun's rays.

I like wearing black, many people wear black cloths here, i don't think it makes us unlucky, since now, nothing bad happen to me when i go out of my house. ^^
But sometimes, when i'm totally all in black, friends and family members think i'm a gothic -_-'.

Hey friend. I don't have any superstition about colours. I like to wear clothes any colour I wish. And moreover, black is one my favourite colours. I like black shirts, T-shirts, jeans trousers. Have a nice day.

Actually yes my whole wardrobe actually has the color black in it and people think that I am always sad, but that is not the truth at all. I think that black can also be a happy color. I dont know why it has been labeled as a sad color though it doesn't really make sense to me. People always tell me to wear more colorful colors, but I rather stick to my wardrobe and nobody can change that about me. Everyone has different tastes in clothes.

Hi anime123
My wardrobe consists of mostly black clothing. It always has since I was a kid. Recently I've started to take notice that I'm drawn to black clothes when shopping. So lately I have been forcing myself to buy more colorful clothes. When I was shopping for the New Years Eve outfit this yaar I had the choice of black jeans or these royal blue cordoroys...I went with the blue to go with something different and was happy I did it!!!

I love wearing black because it's slimming and elegant. Every woman is always searching for their perfect "little black dress". It's easy to accessorize to it too because it make a good canvas for add-ons. Fashion experts say that wearing black lacks imagination and fashion sense. I don't agree with that at all. If you love wearing black and feel confident in it, the attitude your relay portrays that. BY all means, go on feeling special when you wear your black shirt.

Black is one of my favourite colours and I have a lot of black clothes in my wardrobe. My family does not like the idea of wearing back everyday but I just cannot resist myself when I see a nice black dress in the shop and have nearly half my clothes in black!! After all black is beautiful!

I love black. It looks good on everyone and adds such a touch of sophistication. I prefer to dress in black in the winter and white in the summer and I add color with scarves and other accessories

There seems to be a superstitious belief that black is meant for sad occasion and thus, that might be how people won't really like black. I don't associate my bad luck or any misfortunate situation to the color black (if I happens to be wearing black for that day.) I wore black because it makes me look thinner but nowadays, with the large variety of colored tops available and affordable, I will go for something more lively such as bright pink or purple instead of black.

colors are not showing unlucky, lucky or anything. it's just human's mindset that makes them that way.
I personally do not believe in this kind of things but when i am attending several ceremonies such as mourning, then i should just follow whatever color it is required as it is my show of participation and supports.

I feel that black in no way shows sadness. I am a big Texas Tech fan and almost all of the t-shirts I wear are black with the texas Tech Logo! Also black is said to make you look somewhat thinner then in a light colored shirt! Overall I do like wearing black!

Hi there dilipmiester!
I like black clothes and accessories. I find them elegant. The color itself may mean different things in different countries but I still like the color as it is. Much of my clothes and shoes as well as bags are black.

Hi Dilip,
It's only now that i am enjoying wearing black shirt and blouse. when i was a kids and even when i grew up as a teen- we were not allowed to wear black color shirts or dress. it's a morbid color. our leders will always tell us that if we wear black a member in our family will die. an old myth...
now, i have lots o black blouses and shirts.

i love the color black to wear it. because black is very good to me. i like it o much to partner it on my short or pants. it depends to the person if his /her face is unlucky or not. i don't even think that the color black is not good to wear it but i will enjoyed it to wear because that was very nice.

I love to wear black, and I think it is one of the best colors fashionwise (I like it a bit less since I moved to a very hot country, but anyway...).
I have a lot of basics, such as simple black pants, simple black shirts, simple black ballet flats, that I wear a lot, and I love getting new black pieces as well.
Some people think it is boring to wear a lot of black, but it is really not. It gives you the perfect opportunity to play with texture and fabric in order to make it more interesting instead!

Black is just a great color to wear, especially for the evening. There's nothing like that little black number with heels for a cocktail party, or a nice black suit. You can have a black pants also to wear with different colored silk blouses or jackets. Wearing black saves money and looks elegant.
