Do you think that the "old-fashioned" encyclopedia is still useful?

By "old-fashioned" i mean the encyclopedia books that had a lot of volumes.
Can you imagine, not too long ago, those books that took up so much space in the bookshelves were very important for school?
Now all students have to do is go online and they'll find the answers for any homework.
i remember my parents bought a twenty-something volume of encarta for me when i was a kid, and i'd be so amazed at all the information i can read off from the pages.
But now, i hardly even pick up any of those books. I'd just switch on my PC and surf away.
I still have my encarta books at home, but their gathering dust in one of the bookshelves in my room.
I think i'm gonna go and browse through them later on, see if the information they offer is still useful.
Heheh ;)

I remember when I was a small child and that was when the salesmen came to your house and my dad purchased us a set..... I remember sitting on the floor and just looking at the pictures and being so amazed with the information..... Even though we have encyclopedias on the computer it think it is a great investment for any parent to buy a set to keep in the house..... What if your computer went down for a week or crashed? Then your kids could not get work done..... I kept encyclopedias and also dictionaries in my house for my child ..... Now he is 17 and still remember looking at them...... When he wrote reports at home we would use the encyclopedias instead of the computer ones...... It made him realize how important some books and reference materials really are..... I remember him coming home one day and telling me that he had looked up a subject on the computer and realized it was the same things he had seen in the encyclopedias..... He told everyone at school that he had the same books at home and they thought it was COOL... It doesn't take much to make your child feel special just TIME!

That's great! You have a point, having these encyclopedias are great backup when the internet is down :)

I think that too many people rely on wikipedia nowadays for their information
It's a shame just how much the traditional encyclopedia volumes get neglected, because they are packed with useful, intellectual AND accurate knowledge

Yeah, i dont think it's safe to rely on Wikipedia, the content there can be edited by almost anyone with an internet connection.

In my opinion these books are absolutely useless. First of all, the information in these books is out of date. Secondly, these old dated books have been replaced by digital encyclopedias, which are far more informative and even interactive than the old books ever were.

true. i guess the only reason we are holding on to our books is its sentimental value :)

When I was growing up my mom had a set of encyclopedias. Sadly enough, with the advent of the internet, I think it is easier to find info you need online. Encyclopedias can be neat t look at.

I agree with you : an indexed encyclopedia (online/DVD) is good to get quickly an answer.
But, when I have time to kill, I love to leaf through my old paper encyclopedia : many times it opened me new doors to explore new subjects of interest.
Don't throw your old encyclopedia !

i guess not anymore but to some people yes. it is still useful especially for the one who's passion is reading :) i'm not much of a book reader and i want quick answers to my questions so internet is the best for me. my parents also bought 20 vols. of those before and make us read them everyday. unfortunately, they're going to sell it for quick cash lol. they said it's not much of a use now because of the internet. right now, we don't have buyers for it but when i want to kill time i just flip through the pages and look at the pictures in it. :) i feel like i'm smarter when i'm holding an encyclopedia heehee :)

not really.i prefer online encyclopedias, they update quickly.
my parents bought a full set of world book encyclopedias when i was a kid,and they very quickly became out of date.seemed a waste of money to me.

We had a set of encyclopedias when I was growing up. With technology now, it is just quicker to go to the internet. Some of the kids in our family don't even know what one is. Sad, really.

Yes encyclopaedia is still useful in many rural areas where there's no internet connectivity.. but with the development in technology, creativity and innovation a dont think people who are well equipped does'n need the encarta anymore...

i have a 20 volume Glolier encyclopedia and they lie somewhere in the house collecting dust. i dont think they will be helpful any longer because aside from the outdated contents, it doesn't update at all unlike electronic encyclopedia where it updates itself regularly from the net.
