When there is no mail...

Today is President's Day in the United States. No, it's not to celebrate our current president. I guess the government found a medium between Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday, and decided they'd celebrate both on February 15th. Anyway, that means all government workers get the day off. Which is good for them, I don't begrudge them that. I just miss getting my mail! LOL Other countries, does your mail NOT run on certain holidays? Besides Christmas of course for the countries that celebrate Christmas. And New Year's Day. Do you even care that the mail doesn't run? And how many of you take advantage of sales during days like this. I won't be shopping today, but I'm sure there are sales galore.

I don't miss the mail on holidays because no mail means no bills! I don't mind having an extra day without bills, especially after the holidays. It does seem like I always need to go to the bank on days that it's closed, though. The Presidents Day sales drive me a little crazy. I'm not fond of seeing two of our most beloved Presidents dancing on television to sell mattresses and electronics. I guess if you resemble George Washington or Abe Lincoln, this is a great time of year to get a job in a commercial. I'm not planning on doing any shopping today. My kids are home from school, so I'll just stay home and spend time with them. Even if that means missing out on the free cherry pie I could get if I bought a new television.

Hey, I am with you totally about the bills in the mail. I do not have so many now, but it still is a pit in my stomach.Enjoy the day with your kids. Happy President's Day to you. Maybe I should send you a cherry pie. I have been hearing jokes on television all day yesterday and comments about the mattress sales as well. If any show has a host, they have to get in one comment about a new mattress. Some of them even name a particular brand. I have to drive a ways to get to a mall, so that is not a problem for me. Electronics are always on sale. I cannot afford them either, and do not need them. I am just going to enjoy a day at home. It seems that a lot of school districts that had to take extra snow days are using today to make up lost time so they will not have to stay in session so late in the summer.

In concession to President's Day I shall wear black in sadness for all the presidents before Obama who made America great. I do miss the mail however thanks to Obama I cannot afford to spend money on any sales.

Yeah I was wanting to mail something but I can't because it is President's day. I agree I'm not sure how this holiday got started except to honor all of the President's and I do honor all of them. That and a day for making sales.

I never go to the sales. Even if I had money, who wants to fight the crowds to get a dollar off a shirt?

The only thing I dislike about holiday's when their is no mail is that I cannot ship out my packages that day. I normally would have mailed a few this past Saturday to arrive either today or tomorrow, but with the holiday falling on a Monday my shipments would sit around an extra day. So...now I have to wait till late tonight or early tomorrow to make this toffee and get it shipped out. That just means one more day my customers have to wait.

Most of my packages arrive via Fed-Ex or UPS. I was expecting a package today from Fed-Ex. I'm not sure they deliver on holidays.

They don't consider President's Day a holiday at Fed Ex. The next holiday they don't deliver on is Memorial Day.

Hey Amber! I also miss getting my mail! Although, I know that I will probably be sorry tomorrow because I know that there are bills on the way! So, I should probably be happy that I get one extra day reprieve! And I was out today in one store and that was enough for me! And then my girlfriend and I went to Applebee's Restaurant where we had another surprise! It was packed! It was crazy in there! Since the kids are off from school this week I guess everyone decided it was a great day to go shopping and out to lunch! There was traffic everywhere! I really just wanted to stay home and watch General Hospital!

The only sale that I'll be taking advantage of is the half-price chocolate one. Unless I'm expecting something, I don't really miss the mail on holidays or Sundays. A day without mail is a day without new bills coming. What I think is a shame is that more businesses don't honor holidays. The U.S. celebrate fewer holidays than most other countries. If government workers get the day off, then all non-essential businesses should be closed too. When I grew up Massachusetts observed 'Blue Laws' keeping most business closed on these days. I remember the family things we did- picnics, cookouts, swimming (or sliding), visiting friends or other family. With the 'business as usual' mentality of corporate America on holidays, families are being robbed of these important bonding activities, and the wonderful memories that they created.

Do you mean that President's Day is only a holiday for Government employees? We don't have any holidays like that. All holidays in Australia are public holidays - for everyone, and all shops are closed. We don't get mail deliveries on public holidays. I wait for the postman every day. Even though I seldom get personal mail by snail mail, his arrival brings a smile.

Bank employees also get President's Day off, and apparently some schools are out, although none in my state. Other holidays like Martin Luther King Jr. Day a whole lot of businesses are closed, not just government offices.

For some reason, I always wind up at the Post Office with things to mail on President's day that have to go out. I always seem to forget that President's Day and MLK Day are federal holidays. I used to do the same damn thing on Washington's Birthday and Lincolns's birthday. I think there's a tie in to Murphy's law here. LOL

Hi AmbiePam, Here in Canada they made a new holiday a few years back called Family Day, so their won't be any mail today for us either! I may use the last of what little bit of money I have to get price reduced chocolate and candy today, but to be honest it doesn't bother me that their is no mail today. The reason I say that is because I'm not expecting anything other then bills, and I can definitely wait on getting those! Hope you had a nice Valentine's Day yesterday!

I thought I heard on the news that government officials didn't get this day off. That they did away with this holiday several years ago. Maybe I heard wrong but I thought it strange when I heard it on the news just a little while ago. As far as mail, I really don't care whether I get mail or not because, most of the time it is just bills anyway. And no I didn't do any shopping. I went to work hour and half late and got off work 5 hours early due to the snow!

As far as I know, it has never stopped being a government holiday, but perhaps it is a state by state case, and not all states consider it a government holiday anymore.

I remember when we switched to Monday holidays, to give bankers and government workers three day weekends through out the year. I think it takes some of the fun and specialness out of the day for the school kids. In some places they do not even know that we are celebrating Washington and Lincoln. So, President's Day is always the first Monday after February 12 and before February 22. I think perhaps the Monday holidays also went into effect to facilitate planning for some people and make them more predictable. Some places students are out of school, others not. I think a lot of districts through out the states are making up unexpected snow days. I do not miss the mail, as I am not expecting anything except junk mail and bills. I have at least one due today that has not been paid. I wonder if my insurance company will be open. I am all set for mattresses and bedding, and I went to Wal Mart last night with my niece. I still try to stay off my foot as much as possible. Have a great day today, and do not miss the mail too much.

today here in my province in canada, it is a stat holiday (only 3 provinces celebrate this holiday, its called family day) and while all the stores are closed, since mail is a federal agency, they are open and we did recieve mail today, where as the holiday in august (which is called the civic holiday), we dont get mail but most of the stores are open! crazy!!!

yes I noticed signs in all the stores Friday for sales for president's day. As for mail I will just get twice tomorrow to make up for today, but sometime I get offers that expired before I get then notice if mail is not delivered on Monday, like at our local grocer they send out fliers for specials on Monday and then we dont' get till Tuesday. I know this holiday has to do with presidents but I think it could of just went on with out being a national holiday, I dont' begrudge then either, makes a nice weekend off, but it is a holiday for everything any more. But then we do get the sales for such a day, so maybe not too bad an idea.

hi ambiepam I hadn't noticed that but I hate stopping ones mail, as mail and vistors are such a big help in a place like a boring retirement center. that and our Wednesday shopping trips. I am not able to do any shopping right now as I am a bit short on money. But hurrah for President's day.

I agree. I miss getting the mail. However, I do get the day off so I am really enjoying that. I assume the banks are closed today also. That is messing me up more than not getting my mail because I need to deposit some money.
