Toxic Jewelry being pulled off shelfs! Do you own any?

I was very shocked to read that that Walmart and a few other stores are pulling jewelry off their shelves due to the fact of finding contamination of cadmium . In 2008 Congress banned toys and other kids products that contained lead from being used in children's jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States. cadmium is a soft, whitish metal that occurs naturally in soil, cadmium is perhaps best known as half of rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, but also is used in pigments, electroplating and plastic. Low-cost jewelry makers find cadmium attractive because it is cheap and easy to work with. Children can be exposed by sucking or biting such jewelry. But without direct exposure, most people do not experience its worst effects: cancer, kidneys that leak vital protein and bones that spontaneously snap. So becareful and go through your kids jewelry and if they are the type that puts jewelry in there mouths..it is best to have the jewelry tested..cadmium, which can hinder brain development in young children, according to recent research, and is known to cause cancer. You can get more information if you search "toxic jewelry"

Hey gurl...Thank my lucky stars and the heavens beyond we don't have any jewelery that will have this poison in them. Mine are either 24k or better gold with diamonds or cheap wire/beads/shells while my daughter's jewelery is more the cheap plastic like brushes/combs are made out of.

It might be safe..I think it is that shiny metal like coating that they might be referring to..not sure will have to dig further..but they did have something on plastics awhile back..lol :http://www.ehow.com/how_4478972_identify-safe-toxic-plastics.html :http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/02/070215145120.htm :http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/04/050413090800.htm Runs and hides from Blackbriar.. Seems everything we use does something or another to us and cause health issues..Microwaves,aluminum pop cans..cookware..seems no end to it..

-sends the feather pillow on attack and hits the gurl right in the back of the head- I try to use my pyrex dishes to cook in but the micro is what I mainly use for our meals. I know most plastic cookware tends to leach chemicals into the food while it's being nuked. Same goes for the oh-so-popular bottles of water..chemicals leaching into the 'pure' bottled water. I bet my Brita filtered water is more pure than those in the bottles.

Hi Mtdewgurl. That is something to know. How did you find this out? I am shocked that the United States has let this go on. Even for one day. It all comes down to money rules the world. Those that have money can do most anything they want to do and get away with it. God I am thankful that all of my children are grown. Just another worry for those with small children. They are tightening up on airport passangers and then these kinds of things come through our borders. Import and Export should have better guidelines. Everything brought into the USA and going out should be inspected by those in authority. But with this already here in the US the government should hold the port authorities accountable for this too. Like I said the dollar rules! Money is the root of all evil!

It has been all over the internet and I have also seen it on the news. All you have to do is search toxic jewelry and it will take you right to the whole mess. They are doing something, they are banning it just like with the lead,Just think how much simpler times were before money was invented..lol although I'm assuming people grew, made, traded or stole what they wanted or needed..

Hi Mari. I think that is it in a nut shell. The dollar rules. The more people have the more they want. Why can't we all be thankful for what the LORD has given us? If there was no such thing as greed this world might be a better place to live. Be happy with what we have and thank God for all HIS blessings.

Just one more thing to kill us. I don't know why we even trade with China. They have been trying to kill us and our pets for years..lol I say that half jokingly....but only half. I am seriously beginning to think it's true. I think if we made more of the things we need right here in the US then we would have less problems. And who's checking all this stuff....obviously no one that is doing anything about it. It's just drives me to distraction darnit.

I pretty much doubt American made stuff is without faults and flaws also..we just choose to not look to closely at things...and that is how stuff like this sneaks up on us..it takes someone dying or getting ill just for us to get suspicious of stuff. That is going to be our downfall. You know about the wheat they put in pet food..all that problems with it having the poison in it..but why do we have to go overseas for wheat when most the states united states grows it? Probably that mighty dollar thing of getting it cheaper...but not all things are bad we get from China and Import/Export need to keep their noses to the grind stone about these things..

My husband is a carpenter and works in remodeling so he works with drywall and this I didn't know about but it appears that drywall made in China has been causing problems as well. Last year, drywall made in China and imported into the U.S. was linked to corrosion of metal and wires in homes and may also be harming people’s health, according to a report by the product safety commission. A study of 51 homes with the product found corrosion and elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide and formaldehyde, which may cause eye irritation, coughing, headaches and sinus infections, the report said. :http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-01-12/u-s-to-develop-safety-standards-for-toxic-metals-update1-.html

For some reason ever since I was a child. When I would see made in China, I would automatically think of the item as cheap or inferior. I guess I was right all along or so it seems anyway. And see one more example of how they are trying to kill us. Arrrrrggggghhhh

Thanks for sharing this valuable information. I hadn't heard of this, though I had heard about toys being pulled from shelves due to paint that was used on the toys that was toxic. It's a sad shame the majority of our products are made in China and not the USA and things like this our on our shelves.

It's really sad that even companies outside of the US are more for profit than safety for not just our kids but everyone. And seeing that most things are made overseas it would be nice if they'd stop putting people not only in unemployment lines here but poisoning our people!

You should check out the recalls about the jewelry they have found more since I wrote this. Now they had it checked for lead and found a lot over the limit for lead toxicity. Good luck I do hope you can find some that you will be able to buy.

I am allergic to metal so I can only wear silver or gold. I am glad. By reading this I have one major question? who is giving jewelry to kids.? sucking or biting? Jewelry? my mother didn't let me to wear any jewelry till age of 16 and I did the same for my own daughter. My mother was smart by telling me that people supposed to wear only precious metals due to own safety. I agree, most metals are not safe to wear anyway.

Alot of kids wear jewelry. I see it alot at my sisters school even the head start kids had necklaces on and we let my 8 year old sister wears jewelry and my mom is constantly telling her to get her jewelry out of her mouth but after I showed her about the toxic jewelry she took all the metal jewelry awhile and showed what it said to my sister. Alot of parents don't get the expensive jewelry for the little kids since they might break or lose it easily. But they do let them wear it and I would say 20% end up with it in their mouth at one time or another..My niece who's 18 does also not all the time but occasionally....

It's a good thing I haven't purchased any jewelry lately. Because the cheap kind is pretty much all I can afford anyway.

I remember hearing about this on a Fox News report several weeks ago. I doesn't shock me though. My husband gets alerts through his email from the consumer product safety commission. It seems everyday they are recalling something else that was imported from China due to a lead poisoning hazard and now this. I try to check as often as I can the toys and things that my children bring home from church, school and store and to check labels, but it is not always possible. Thanks for reminding of this. Sincerely in Christ, Leesa C. Eph.2:8,9

Hello Leesa, thanks for responding to my discussion,It is hard to keep control on everything, even the paint/dyes that is on cups and stuff can be toxic..but the best we can do is keep checking the best we can..

mntdewgurl74 That's just plain greedy and I would bet manufacturers knew it was dangerous to children's health. or maybe to any one's health for that matter. I find it appalling that they would use the stuff especially for little children's jewelry.this is horrible if they knew it caused cancer.

Well it was found in the 1800's so it has been around a long time and I am sure it has been studied closely since then. But China has different rules and regulations then the US has,But still it is better to find out what the regulations are so something like this doesn't happens again. You know what? It makes me think of all those children at ST,Jude's Hospital and wonder if some are there because of this stuff..

Thanks for this warning mtdewgurl74. I have mainly gold or startling silver jewellery but I am wearing cheap metal studs in my ears as I speak! I’ve had these earrings for a while and received no adverse reaction and I am not likely to put them in my mouth! My daughter has a lot of jewellery, some is gold but the majority is costume jewellery. She’s had no problems either and, being eight she does not put anything in her mouth either. Having said that I will go through our jewellery and make sure.

I think I've been kind of lucky in this regard I don't have to worry so much about it really. to be quite honest. I don't own much juwerly anyway and what I do own is hidden somewhere. I'm an adult so there is no danger of toxic exposure because I don't suck nor bite jewerly. And, if I had children I'd be sure they outgrew the sucking/biting stage before giving them poticinal chocking hazards. so for that reason alone I wouldn't give a child jewerly.
