Do You Tend To Clean More If You Know Visitors Are Coming Round?

I'm absolutely shattered! All this week I have been cleaning, cleaning and cleaning some more! Why? Because we are picking my Mum up 100 miles away tomorrow and bringing her back for the weekend! If I'd got some red carpet I would've made sure I could roll it out on her impending arrival.
Seriously though, do you do this? If you have someone who you don't see that often come round for a couple of days do you clean like an idiot? I mean, it's not as though the house is dirty because I'm always here, not at work..so why do I do it? Do I want to create a good impression and not let my Mum think I'm lazy and I don't do anything all day (which is untrue).
Honestly, I need a beer after all that. Thank goodness John has come up trumps with a couple of cans of Kronenbourg 1664.
Well, at least the new wireless printer is up and running. John saw to that. I don't think I could stand getting involved in yet another task today!

hello janey,
yeah i am also like that. hen i know that someone is coming over to visit us, i do have a tendency of being too busy cleaning the whole house. i do clean every corner and make sure that they will not see anything that's foul to their eyes! haha
maybe i just don't want to give them bad impression yes and i feel like if they find something wrong with me & the house, it will also reflect on my husband...
well i guess its really normal.
hmm, don't orry, after that you can already relaxed...anyway its your mom right? and not your mom in law? hehe

Haha! Mother-in-law, definitely NOT the same lol although I must say that this house never looks a tip, even if she comes round uninvited, which she has done a couple of times. At least with my own Mum I have time to plan ahead! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels she has to clean, clean and clean some more but, like you said, it's done now, so I can relax.

Hi CK,
at least we are one and the same as it relates to preparing our house for our visitors. i am always excited to make the house ready and welcome anybody who wants to visit us and be with my family.
@Jane,
congrats for that big break in cleaning and thanks mom for the kind effort to make jane feel more relax!

oh absolutely, I am the worlds worst housewife. I keep things tidy , although I am also the biggest hoarder in the world. ( I have to read every single magazine, supplement, and newspaper in the house) I could be a lot tidier. Its the little things, like skirting boards and sweeping behind fridges and washing machines. I had a new bed and also a new washing machine delivered on 2 different occasions in the last 6 months. and the night before, i was on my hands and knees, cleaning skirting boards, paintwork and floors. Oh dear and the only excuse I can make is that I am in full time work. . So when you come to my house and I am aware you are visiting, everything will be gleaming, but all the dust will come back down after I have been whirling round like a dervish, with hoovers, sweepers and dusters. Yes I also like to make a good impression, just don't open any cupboards !!

hello ??? whats a cobweb ???. Actually I am quite tall for a woman, nearly 5'8" but my excuse for not seeing them is that I am short sighted !

Hi Marge and Jane,
...that's the normal excuse of busy women like us but if given the time and the break can make everything shine and cozy at home right?
well, marger, cobwebs are those that the spiders cling on and look nasty when not swept. i feel like our house is a haunted one if we have all those stuff in the corner of our ceiling. thanks to long stick brooms. so easy to take out the cobwebs.

I am exactly the same my friend! When Mum was sat next to me last night when I was surfing the net on her behalf she looked up into the corner (high up) and said, "you have cobwebs" not in a nasty way, she was just observing! I told her that I'm too small to get up there and clean cobwebs away and we have high ceilings! That's my excuse and I'm gonna stick to it!

Haha! I know what you mean. I once got told off by the mother-in-law when she said "sit down, chill out" when I was about to clean something. I replied, "well, I can't help being houseproud" and was also tempted to say, "unlike your daughter!" Haha!

I always tend to have my place clean. So, if any visitor does drop unexpectedly, I am rarely worried over cleanliness.
As for you, I do not why you should such a show off of your cleanliness????. Hey, its only mum, yaar. I do not think she will get irritated by your uncleanliness.
And I am sure, you do not keep your place so unclean that you should have sleepless nights over this trival issue.

Hi Janey,
To be honest YES. it's an extra effort for all of us to ensure the house is truly clean (though we maintain it to be clean...still...). we want our visitors to feel great even if no activity yet--our place is homey and pleasant to stay for them.

Yeah I tend to do a lot more work when I know people are going to come around. I don't like giving the impression. But, it doesn't help that George starts to become a bit of a nut case when he starts to worry about what other people think. Me, I'd just declutter and dust sometimes and that's enough. But, I end up doing more to please other people (housing inspectors) so yeah I... do it but I should be keeping up, but I don't like I should. Still trying to get George back in the habbit of vacuming once a week.

Yeah, IF someone were to come visit, I'd do a bunch of cleaning, too. But that's such a rare occasion that I only clean when I feel like it. (I AM lazy.)

Nothing wrong with that! I wish I was like that sometimes. Perhaps it's an age thing, who knows? I WILL enjoy my Mum's visit, thank you! When we pick her up I will try to take some photos of pics on the walls (larger photos I took of cows and things) and her moggies...always entertaining. By the way, Dad will be looking after them so they won't be on their own.

I clean like crazy when I know that somebody is coming for a visit ( unless it's my boyfriend or my brother's girlfriend, cause they are more like temporary residents rather than visitors. Hehehe. )
Actually, when there's a visitor then that's the only time that we REALLY clean the apartment. So just imagine the amount of things that needs cleaning. Hehehehe.

Oh yes I do. I think everyone does!!! I get a bit OCC when i hear that guests are coming over!!! right form the preparation of food to setting the table to seeing whether everything is in place in one heck of a job ...also if kids are accompanying the guests, then i have to see that all breakable items are above their reach...Also cleaning kitchen before they come is one thing I find very difficult as I would always be with my last set of cooking when they come hi hi

Ah you know how children can be know!! havoc!!! I have this collection of Onyx and everytime I see kids coming in I run to keep them on the cabinet!!! they are so restless, and when their parents are so engrosed in conversation, it becomes even difficult to restrict them from, doing something. we live far from all relatives and since an international airport is near our home, we almost always have guests. Sometimes :( sometimes :) to have them... hi hi

Goodness me, you do make sure that everything is "just so" when guests arrive, don't you? In a way, I am lucky because we don't have lots of guests arriving at the same time. Certainly no children, anyway!

I clean if I know I am having company also. I live alone so the house really doesn't get that dirty. If no-one is comming over I let the cleaning go longer than I should. My mother has said (I am disabled). her neighbor should see my house. Her house is dirtier than mine and there is nothing wrong with her. She and some of my friends say I should be proud of my house in my condition and it always seems clean. That is because if I know they are comming I will clean it.

My mother is like that! She is 85 and still in good shape. Better than either of her children. She cleans and irons everything, but she doesn't put tissue paper between things.

That is most impressive I must say! Well done for outdoing your neighbour! We know someone who is 90 years old and she is amazing. She cleans EVERYTHING and her clothes are all ironed and folded afterwards. Apparently, her jumpers are inbetween tissue paper in drawers and she cooks like a dream. Unbelievable, what a woman!

you hit the nail right in the head, janey. making an impression is the word. my wife does the clean up, i don't. i want to be as natural as it gets. but my wife wants to show my mother, even our guests, that the house is always in order, not necessarily spanking clean, if you know what i mean. sometimes, though, i also do some cleaning up, but not because some visitors are coming. it's just that the clutter is getting the beast out and i have to fix things to prevent the dragon from coming in...

The thing is, if I had stuff lying around the place Mum would trip over it as she is accident-prone (just like me) so it makes sense to clear everything up and keep it all clean, not only for her benefit but for mine and hubby's too (who's just done the ironing by the way). Sweetheart!

Hi Janey1966,
Absolutely understand! Hey, applies even if someone wishes to pay us a short visit. When someone visits, this is the scenario at home - stress levels increase, tension increase, adrenaline start pumping, tempers fuse, increased mental and physical activities (like you said "cleaning, cleaning and cleaning some more!") - with me experiencing it and at the same time, me causing those around to experience it =) Ha, maybe just wish to create a good impression on friends and relatives? And maybe coupled with my personality of being a near perfectionist in hygiene and cleanliness?
For your case, I guess it's cos your Mum is important to you and you want things at home to be in excellent condition for her sake? =))
Have a great weekend with her!

I'm a hygienic person too and I just couldn't stand muck everywhere, it would do my head in! It's got to be right hasn't it? I wouldn't like to stay somewhere that is full of cobwebs and a nightmare to sleep in! By the way, welcome to MyLot!

LOL Could you come over and clean my place up in time for the weekend hun?
I must confess though I am just the same, and will spend hours and hours cleaning up, tidying up, washing up, and making sure everything is pristine before visitors come over. I wonder why I bother sometimes as the place usually ends up looking like a bomb site by the time they leave :-D

Haha! I know EXACTLY what you mean! Mum smokes and I let her smoke in the house. My husband smokes and even before I came along he would smoke at the back door lol. Mum spreads herself about a bit but before she goes home it's like she's never been here as she tidies up first. Awww! That must be where I get it from.

I tend to clean a lot if I know people are coming over...if it's just me I do keep it relatively clean but I don't go all out unless someone is coming over. Because I don't want them to see the place messy.

I do clean my house when people are coming over. We have people coming to stay with us this coming June or July and I will make sure before they come that the house is clean. It will be hard since I will be 8 or 9 months pregnant at the time but I will try my hardest. I am just praying that I am not on bedrest when they come. How boring will I be?

I always NEED to clean more when someone is coming to the house, as I am not a great housekeeper. As it is, I always have dust bunnies hanging around. I think they think that they belong here, and I can't convince them otherwise. I do have things that I don't think I have dusted the entire 3 years I have lived here, and I hate to admit that! I was just thinking earlier today, that I do need to do some serious spring cleaning this year, since some things have not been moved from the spots I've put them in when I moved in here in Nov of 2006!!

Well at least you are honest and there are areas of this house that I just can't reach due to the high ceilings and the fact I'm only 5ft 4ins tall. We do have little step ladders but I don't trust them. I'm not gonna kill myself over a couple of cobwebs in corners!

well, i only spring clean my house once a year to welcome the new year. since there are 2 new years that i know of, i.e, the western new year on the first of january and the chinese new year that follows the chinese calender, i choose the western calender. my spring cleaning is primarily to remove items that are hardly in use to give away to relatives, friends and charities that i accumulate in that year. i do the normal routine house hold chores and that to me is already clean. when some one is visiting and staying over, then i have to put in extra effort, work, time and energy to clean up and rearrange the bedroom room. usually i have to change the bedsheets, and make sure there are empty cabinet shelves and space for my guests to put their stuff.
Janey, you are a wonderful daughter and i am sure your mum loves to be dotted on.she knows you care and love her so much that you walk the extra mile to make her comfortable in your home. why not, the choice is your.
