I have been thinking about a vacation alot lately. With all the cold weather and snow around me, all I can think about is sun and sand. I have went to the beach several times throughout the years but I have never been crazy about swimming out into the ocean. I think it might be because once when I was a child, we had a family vacation and me and my cousins were swimming in the ocean and one of them got stung by a jellyfish. It was a very srious injury..I guess he's still scarred..but anyway..my b/f says he loves to swim in the ocean. What about you swimming in the ocean? Do you or would you if you were there?

Anniefannie! I was just asking about you the other day! So good to see you on. I am hoping this nasty cold weather will pass soon. I'm just plain tired of snow and cold. I used to swim in it wothout fear before my cousin got stung. I guess it just really left an imprint. I will go out to my knees and even sit there but any further than that and I'm just plain uncomfortable. Thanks for the response and I hope you get a vacation soon.

If it is safe to do so I like to swim in the ocean. My local beaches are not safe for swimming due to sinking mud and dangerous tides. I love traveling to tropical islands that have white sandy beaches. I adore swimming in warm water and the sea around my home country is cold. Snorkeling is a hobby of mine when I am traveling in a tropical country. I have been swimming at beaches in Australia, Fiji, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, the Seychelles and the Maldives.

Wow...have you ever seen any jellyfish or sharks while you were snorkeling? I bet it would be amazing to be able to snorkle and see the beautiful fish and coral. Sounds like you have really got to see some wonderful places. I'm glad you aren't afraid to enjoy them. Thanks for the response.

No, I would not swim in the ocean at all. That is just too risky for me. This happened to my sister also one time too. We went to Myrtle Beach and she said that she felt something sting her foot. I think she saw what it was, and someone got it off of her. She said that it was stinging her feet. It was a Jellyfish. That is why I don't like to go to beaches. I never swim in a stream, lake, pond, waterfall, ocean, swamp, river and a shore... It is so much of predators that are deadly in the waters. I always would think twice about doing this.

Hi cream! Those jellyfish are nasty little creatures. Beautiful to see as long as they aren't stuck to your body I do swim at the waterfall and will go tubing down a river but I think it's just because I was raised in the area. If I was raised around beaches, I might feel differently about them too. I don't like lakes or ponds..especially no swamps. Thanks of responding.

Nowadays they have alerts if jelly fish are in the area. I do like the ocean but am happier swimming in a pool as I hate getting the sand off of me. When we were in Italy, the beaches in Sicily were beautiful and it was a great joy to swim there, sand and all.

Yeah I'd swim in the ocean, I live in Florida.. I have many times. The only precaution is shuffle your feet if your not in see-thru water, and also take off jewelry.. leave it in your car or hotel, because it can and will get lost.

Just for future reference when I go to the beach again..what's with the feet shuffling? If it makes me feel better about getting in..please share. Do you usually go pretty far out or stay kind of close to the shore? I wonder if there is a secret Florida way of spotting a jellyfish pack. What about sharks?

When I was 17 my family went on vacation to the beach one summer. I was also stung by a jellyfish. I can tell you that it is VERY painful! To each his own and everything but there is no way I would take the chance on reliving that particular incident.

Wow..you got stung? I guess it can be very easy to swim right up on a jellyfish. I think they actually travel and live in groups too. I think about that everytime I step into the water. I will go out about knee deep but that's pretty much as far as I go. Thanks for the input!

Living on an Island...surrounded by the Ocean...you betchum, Jen...I swim in the Ocean! I am wondering if your bf..enjoys the ocean water for the salinity which gives you MUCH MORE buoyancy...and can differ in different parts of the World! I have swam in both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean..and love them both! And realistically there are as many nasty things in FRESH WATER...as the Ocean!
Many of the beaches in Tourist areas (like Oahu) have compounded off areas, that allow NO "strays" in....even found that in Florida...and Baja California!
Trust me...you will love swimming in the Ocean...just wash the salt off thoroughly after...as most popular beaches also have out-door, open air showers to rinse off!
GRAB some sun & sand...enjoy the OCEAN!!! Cheers!

Thank you...Thank you, dear Jen, for the best response! You betcha..you get your sweet self (and familie's) sweet souls up here...and we will get you dipping in the Ocean, and lovin' it! Water just chilly enough to snap those pores to attention...and you'll stroke like heck, and 'nary a "ocean inhabitant" will catch you! LOL! But you will catch lots of them, for fine dining! Take care..and thot of you lots, lately....Rainbows are gracing the sky nearly daily...typical Spring weather. Hope you are safe, Jen....have been watching the horrible weather that has hit beautiful TN, and prayed for both you..and Antiquelady. Please tell me you are OK? HUGZ!

I should have known you would be bobbing around out there in the clear blue waters...you are tough as nails Shirley..you don't have to be worried about those sissy little jelly fish or those sharks I still want to see you beat everyone on Survivor one day I need to come up there and practice with a pro before I get out there and turn into jellyfish bait.

i am decent swimmer buddy... here jelly fishes don't pose a big threat, neither do those sharks... the major problem comes from rocks which lie underneath the water... if one's foot gets struck in these rocks its impossible to get it out of it
and also from people... if too many people get into the ocean some get drowned because of lack of space... sounds weird na..

That's great you get to go so much. I bet you are a very good swimmer. Are there alot of people in your area that get stung by a jellyfish? There have been a lot that I know of and there have also been a lot more reported shark attacks on the beaches in Florida. I think to much..lol..Thanks for responding.

He he he he he! You, most of the time, put a smile on my face with your discussion.
Although, I want to swim in the ocean but I couldn't do it when I was there last time. To tell you the trutht that I have been there only once in my life and I think it will take another 5 years to get to there again!
But this time, I will make sure that I will swim in it. I have did it in the longest river in India, that is, Ganga! I want to test the ocean with my hands and legss!

I always swim at the beach when I go there, as it is so incredibly good for your health to immerse yourself in the salt water. It is really relaxing too, I always return feeling calm and renewed.
We get some jelly fish here, my son got a sting a few years ago when he was young, we put ice on it from a nearby fish shop and the stinging went away. They do not scare me though, unlike the ones further north from here. You cannot swim in the ocean in a lot of places up there over summer as the jellyfish can kill you. They are one of the most deadly creatures on earth.

Are those the legendary Box jellyfish? I have heard those things are very dangerous. It is amazing how such a creature can be so deadly. I am very scared of runnung across one. My cousin had to go to the hospital and stay for a couple of days of our vacation when I was little. I also went fishing with my dad and grandfather on the same trip. I remember laying on my tummy and looking through the boards at the ocean. There were sharks galore swimming around. I remember being a little afraid that the pier might break. There is so many creatures in the ocean. You are brave to swim there.

The Irukandji Jellyfish and the Box Jellyfish are what I am talking about. They are related to each other, but The Irukandji Jellyfish are far more dangerous as the sting is only minor. So most people do not realise that they have been infected with a deadly poison until it is too late.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irukandji_jellyfish
Box Jellyfish are not found this far south on the coast, but they have been found in recent times only a five hour drive north of me where they were previously not thought to be!
There are loads of sharks here too, but if you are sensible then you will be fine. Never swim at dawn or dusk and night, never swim while bleeding and never swim after flooding heavy rains and when the water is murky.

I seldom go to the beach, even though I live about 25 minutes away from it. When I do though, I go into the ocean. I'm not a very good swimmer so I don't go in any farther than about chest deep, so I guess you would say I was a "wader" and not a swimmer. I also pay attention to any warnings they may have out about jellyfish, algae, riptides or whatever, which will influence my decision to even go in the first place. The way I look at it, if you can't go in the ocean, what's the point of going to the beach?

Well..I love the scenary and the atmosphere of the beach. I am in the mountains so it is quite a difference from what I'm used to. I will go in to my knees and even sit down there but any further out and I kind of panic. I wish I weren't such a big chicken..lol..but I just can't get past it. I try everytime I go. I actually love the beach but just can't swim in it..I'm weird I guess...lol..

well, i am an average swimmer, so i won't venture far from the beach into the ocean. i'll just stay at manageable levels of water. also, when there's a swell, i would rather stay on the beach...

Oh yeah, jellyfish does hurt. I know how painful that can be, because I got briefly stung once and it did hurt. But that didn't hinder me from hitting the beach. However, lately I've been having some qualms due to the weather that is unpredictable and at the same time, I don't want to get unnecessary tan. Here in my country, the weather is rather tropical and one can get a tan that lasts for a few weeks, if out in the sun for too long, ha..

I have only been to the beach once! I've been to two beaches, but it was only one trip. In any case, I went into the ocean and nearly got pulled away so as for swimming? I wouldn't go too far into the ocean, maybe just to the point of wading! I'm not a confident swimmer, and besides I'd much rather just get seashells!

I think I would. I would love to go to the Oregon coast and just eat fish and walk in the surf. I am not sure I would swim in the ocean right away but at some point I would. It would have to be during the warm part of the Summer though. There seems to always be a breeze and sand though. Hehehe

I feel pretty much the same way. I have a bad trauma when I was younger and am pretty spooked when I get into water very deep. I love the ocean though. And lets not forget the fish.

Yes..there is always those..lol..I get to my knees. I can sit down with it up to my neck..but as far as swimming...I am so uncomfortable that I just want out. I love being on the beach though. I see parasailing and think it must be really fun but then I see them land in the water and I know I wouldn't do it. It's like bait bobbing around out there for a big ol shark
