Oliver has a temper tantrum!

So, I get home from work and the roomie comes out to tell me about Oliver today. Rather than just tell you what she told me, I'll steal what she posted on Facebook... "Boy did Oliver get mad at J this morning - he slipped into the living room and she put him out. He tried to get into the cat room and she chased him out. He sat in the middle of the kitchen floor and spent a good two minutes hollering at her with the tail switching pretty fiercely. He wound up jumping up into my arms and purring his head off, but growled at J every time she even looked at him." Oliver is a funny boy. But he sure does have a temper! I've never seen him this angry tho - at least not at a person (he will get that way with other cats.) I guess he told J tho, didn't he! You have a cat with a temper? does he growl at you or others?

Is J your boyfriend? Maybe he got jealous? Male pets tend to be possessive of female owners, and vice versa. My grandaunt's cat Lily doesn't give female humans the time of day, but would wrap herself around her male owner the moment he'd walk in. XD I think that's common for some very hormonal/possessive pets. Like an Oedipus/Electra complex of sorts. Heheh!

no, J is another female roommate - the only males in the house are cats and one dog I call cats "the opposite species"

So what made Oliver so mad in the first place? It really sounds like he was having an attitude like Gissi does. He was going to tell those people what to do.

god,yes my calico. she's sweet as pie by herself with people, but you add another cat to the mix and she sits there cussing her head off.most often her target is her own blood brother. they used to curl up together as little kittens, but since getting older she won't stand for him to sit too close to her.and yet if one is in trouble, the other comes running.total siblings LOL

that's so true! Suky was Cat's daughter and while Suky didn't care too much, but once Cat was being attacked by another cat, Suky attacked that cat from behind and then raced around the apartment complex and stranded that cat on the roof!

LOL i can see that. this week they're been fighting over an elevated pet bed. i made the mistake of putting a comfy knitted baby blanket in it,now they both want it. nevermind the fact there are at least 5 other places they could sit including a nice poofy window seat..

My cat baby comes out swinging. When he's angry, he just keeps on swinging. He doesn't growl or talk to the other cat Creamsicle, he just keeps on swinging. Both cats talk to us humans a lot, but they swing at each other when angry. They keep swinging until one gets tired, we break it up, one runs off, something changes. Sometimes there is a tail twitching thing going on first or even afterward.

I got Oliver mad at me last week. The roomie stepped on him 3 times, I got his tail and then tried to nudge him out of our way so he wouldn't get stepped on again, and he started yowling and carrying on at me, giving me a good "dressing down."

I think cats do have temper. The ones near my home do, at least. I've seen them squabbling, being angry and stuff like that, and it's really sometimes entertaining to watch. But if the bickering is too much, I'll step in. I've seen someone coming to the rescue when this small kitten tries to eat something that she has given and the bigger cat wants it all for himself. Sharing is giving, but anyway cats are cute. And I believe they do have temper, just like us humans.

Yeah, Oliver really has that temper! he thinks he's still "the baby" and he doesn't like to be reminded he's not little any more, until he wants to push his weight around!

Which can take some time off just to shower attention..but that's cute, really. I love cats. Oliver is a nice name by the way. How did you come to name Oliver?

You know the story of Oliver Twist? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Twist Well, Oliver, the cat, was found at a week old and it seemed a fitting name for an "orphan" kitten. We raised him on a bottle and by then we were totally smitten, he's the kitten in my avatar, the cat is Rygel, who raised him from 4 weeks old to be a proper cat! He's almost 4 1/2 yrs old and a big of fluffy boy.

I've had a cat in the past with a temper. She was very possessive of me and her pillow on the bed. Her name was Smokey and every time anyone would get near me, or touch me she would growl and hiss at them. If they did not take the hint she would jump on them and growl. She never bit or scratched anyone but she did sound really, really evil. She had an attitude too. She thought she was a person, and if you told her other wise she'd hiss at you, but at the same time she thought it was funny to torment the dog buy running up his back from tail to nose then sitting on top of the refrigerator and letting him bark his head off, so he would get in trouble for barking in the house. He was a Welsh Corgi named Choncho.

she sounds like she was a "piece of work" a cat with attitude! Our cats are actually pretty good with the dogs - and its a good thing too!

Other than terrorizing Choncho she was pretty good with dogs too, if they left her alone she'd just stare at them the entire time they were in the house. But if they tried to bark at her or sniff her- it was on. She just 'zing' them all day- full out running from one side of the house to other other, just to use the dog in question as a spring board. Never really hurting them, just driving them nuts because they could never catch her.

i never have a cat before as a pet... so i never know that cat can throw a tantrum as well... it is very funny to hear your story and learn that cat can actually throw a tantrum too just like human beings... hopefully Oliver will be able to cool down and forgive J soon for whatever she does to make him mad... :-) take care and have a nice day...

I can't say that Oliver loves J as much as he loves the other roomie and I, because we're "the mommas" we both raised him from a week old - he's the black and white kitten in my avatar

Honestly, Oliver is pretty laid back with people most of the time, mostly looking offended when we laugh at him, but I guess he felt J was picking on him and was going to let her have it!

Oh yes I sure do! But I've gotta say, that's a funny story! LOL Cats are so comical and boy, do they ever have opinions of their own?! LOL I'd say three of my cats have a temper. Chopper is a mixed ragdoll and he constantly growls, hisses and talks. I'm so glad hubby and I have him because nobody would understand him like we do. We've had him since he was a tiny kitten so we know him quite well. He doesn't like anybody but hubby or I to pet him. He does not like being around other animals but has been known to make a friend or two but that's it. We could pick him up and he'd be growling, we could just pet him and he'd be growling or moaning and groaning as I call it. He won't bite us but anybody else, he would. He's strictly our cat. As for Rascal, oh he's funny. If we make him mad, there's no apologizing to him! Nooooo! He has to go off somewhere and cool off before he'll have anything to do with us. I've tried to apologize to him but he just won't have it so it's best to let him be and when he wants to come back, he will on his own terms. Bobo is my blue point siamese and he likes certain cats and that's it. He'll get all bent out of shape and attack if one that he doesn't like comes near him. He's the one that was hit by a car last year but survived but has brain damage. He's doing pretty good with the exception, he seems to forget what he's doing or wanted to do so hubby and I have kept a good watchful eye on him. He means the world to us for he's a real love bug. Well heck, they all mean the world to us regardless of personality.

Cats can really be characters, can't they? No, mine don't get mad or growl at me. It takes a lot. But 1 of my cats, George, he howls at me all the time to get my attention, not because he is angry. He is just very talkative.

I have one, Kit, who doesn't howl, but he's always reaching (and grabbing if he can) at us and making these nearly noiseless meows because he's so starved for attention - but he has a sad story behind him.

most of the cats only display temper toward the other cats, unless the cats already don't like humans like the ferals, and even they would rather just stay away - I've been hissed at before, but never told off

Oh, well there goes my response to this discussion. Since it was about Oliver and he is a cat. I will refrain from telling you about my nephew who is 2 years old and he has tantrums too. When I am around and he has one and his mother tries to discipline him I would yell run, run, to your auntie because your mom is going to attack you seriously. Boy you better be careful you know your mom don't play that.

HI Elic: LOL! That's a very funny story indeed; I've never had any pets do that really but anytime I give them meds or doctor their ears that's when my cats really get mad at me, especially Screamer...LOL! She will be mad at me for HOURS until she decides she is hungry and needs me to feed her... The Little Stinker!

I guess having all these cats, it makes them mostly not have too may tempers - they run off after having their ears done, but they don't stay mad!

The cats I have now seem ok but the cat I had up until three months ago when he passed away used to get angry at my husband if he touched me. He would sit between us on the couch and if hubby got too close the cat would start by giving him a nasty look and then proceed to bite him, hard! Aside from that he was a pretty tolerant cat, he took ages to feel comfortable with my husband and the funny thing is that we bought the cat together so it’s not a case of my having the cat before we lived together. Strange feline...

Obviously he bonded to you and was jealous of your husband's attentions. Actually, some male cats can be pretty territorial and that sounds like your cat, you were his territory and your husband was a male encroaching on it!

While Moomin is often so laid back he's horizontal, he does have his moments when he gets grumpy. He will sometimes hide under my desk while I'm typing and if I move my feet he will growl, usually a few seconds before *attacking* my feet LOL. He doesn't normally growl or attack anyone seriously, more for the fun he gets from the reactions.

Really... my cats don't attack unless they are unhappy or playing, and that doesn't generally involve growling! I have a big old scratch on the side of my finger where Rygel was playing "mousey under the covers" and pulled the cover off!

I can't have cats but my brother always had cats, mostly Siamese. They were VERY temperamental and could throw a temper tantrum better than his kids! They knew they had him and his wife wrapped around their little paws and took every advantage they could. I had a dog about ten years ago that used to stand facing a corner when he didn't get his way. Naturally, we felt sorry for him and cajoled him into coming out and getting a treat--he trained us well!

My cat Chloe is a real b1tch. I love her and she can purr like crazy (and loud enough to hear across the room), but if someone tries to pick her up, she instantly becomes angry, hissing, growling and will attack the person's face who tries. Thankfully, she has no front claws (I know there are differences of opinion on that - she was clawless when I got her) or all of us would be bloody messes! She stopped attacking my face after I let her have it one day, but she will still growl and hiss if she's not in the mood. Part of it is that she has a bad hip - I'm assuming an injury acquired with her previous owners - how I don't know. They said her mood changed for the bad after she went to the vet to be spayed. She also wants to know who's picking her up, so you definitely can't come at her from behind. When we first got her, she was with strangers in a strange house. My daughter wanted to hold her, so I handed her over and my other two cats attacked her in my daughter's arms. It took three years before she'd even stay in the same room with my daughter. She associated that attack with my daughter. She held on to that anger and hate long and hard.

I wrote a big long message and the computer lost it! but there are a few reasons to declaw, but lets face it, you didn't have it done, but the previous owners might've done it to protect themselves!

I had one male cat and 3 females at one time The male wouldn't growl at the females, but he would beat them up if they did something he didn't like. He would get mad at me on a regular basis, especially if I went on vacation or went away for a few days. He never growled at me or anything he just wouldn't talk to me. He must have really wanted in that room to get so mad! Or maybe he just is like my cat and is used to having his own way.
