What is the best movie to watch for someone with a broken heart?

I have this really, really close high school friend who just recently broke up with her looooong-term boyfriend of 7 years (seriously). They started going out in college and all of us friends thought that they'd end up together since they seemed to be so in love. Anyway, needless to say (and without divulging the gory details), relationships just suck sometimes, so now my friend just sits mostly in a stupid sad heartbroken daze most of the time.
A bunch of us concerned girlfriends plan on throwing her a pajama party like we used to in high school to perk her up a little. We plan on having a movie marathon of movies that may rouse her from her stupor or just make her feel a little better about her situation. We've managed to come up with a short list of mostly inspirational feel-good movies, but I thought I'd ask you Lotters as well. What movies would you suggest that would be great for someone who is heartbroken? Not the wallow-in-self-pity types, but something that will help someone regain her trust in people and zest for life.
Your responses will be greatly, wonderfully appreciated :)

Wanna know my choice? Kill Bill
Yes it is cheesey as hell, but hey, if what the protagonist has to suffer in this film can't be considered heart-break I don't know what can
Plus, it's all about revenge, which may be inspiring to fix that broken heart (minus the over-the-top violence and killing of course).
Please don't take this post seriously though, it's the only suggestion I could think of that hasn't already been mentioned.

Actually when I read comment #3 about watching 300 and Gladiator my mind naturally drifted off towards Kurosawa's gorey samurai movies and of course, Kill Bill! :)
I'm all for taking things into your own hands and finding the strength to stand up for yourself. My friend's kind of passive and weak and just sits and stares right now but maybe Kill Bill will incite her to act just a little...
A samurai sword would be nice as a get-back-at-your-ex gift, eh?
(just humor me, i'm having these slasher scenes playing in my head right now :p)
Thanks :)

Cheesy as hell or bloody as hell? hehe... Kill Bill is by far my most favorite movie to watch! Since your broken-hearted, think like Beatrice Kiddo eh?

Watch something scarey or interesting! The goal is to take your mind off that broken heart, so something really emotional (without being mushy love stories) will do the trick, without a doubt! You need fear, action and comedy! Stay away from drama, p-l-e-a-se!

Hmm. That ticks off a few movies from our list (we had a few 'inspirational' movies that had some lovestory subplots). But that did open up our short list to some really funny movies that we've seen since high school... thanks!

Oh.. I'm not really a fan of Jim Carrey (can't feel much mirth for toilet humor) but I distinctly remember her laughing her head off when we watched Ace Ventura as kids. Maybe that will get her at least to smile again :) Thanks!

I had seen old movie "The Ghost" and it was such a great feeling inside. This movie has every feeling I could feel. I think if you watch this movie, your mind might change with the feeling of the importance of each other. I saw this movie 3 years back and whenever there is a talk about love, I name this movie. I love to watch this movie again and again. this movie is a love booster for me.
There is no definite formula as such as to watching which movie will work for a broken heart but I would recommend this movie.

Hmm... I'd have to agree with the earlier comments, perhaps a love story isn't really the best idea when she's recovering from what she thought was the best love story of her life :/
But we all love Ghost though. I remember being just a kid (well, not really) when I first saw the movie. I didn't really understand the concept of romantic love that much yet (oh the joys of innocence) but the emotion really comes out of the screen that even as a young girl I could feel the intensity of it.
Maybe when she's ready to fall in love again we'll throw another pajama party with "Ghost" in the movie list. :) Thanks!

i think the one with a broken heart should go for comedy movies or some movies which have some good facts in that , i would prefer comedy movies isnce we may feel relaxed and they can make us laugh . if you want to regain some confidence you should go to some movies like brave heart , gladiator , 300 where the individuals show amazing character to achieve things .

Ooohhh... 300. Yes. I think she (or rather we) may be temporarily stunned by those rock-hard aribrushed abs and hot hot men in briefs and capes :S Perfect for a girl's night out, actually :D
Thanks!

keep away from rom-coms. that would only make your friend go teary. watch flicks that reinforces friendship. films that would remind her that it's not necessary to have a boyfriend to stay happy as long as she has friends like you. let me think... "now and then" tells alot about friendship or "my girl" or something life altering... something inspirational. try "remember the titans" =)

People find the " zest for life " in different ways. for me, A damn good action film wold do it for me. or a film where a woman who was done wrong gets her revenge. My suggestion is to think back to when you were in highschool, What film did you really like? Play that one.

For strict revenge and violence Part 1 is great. If you want the reason behind the revenge and action, see Part 2.

Hm.. I think Kill Bill really fits that bill (:p). It's not really high school though, but it would do fine :) Thanks!

White Chicks... is that the movie where the black guys pretend to be white? Haven't really seen it, but I've read reviews, and it seems promisingly wacky :) thanks!

just give her time.,no one and nothing can solve the broken heart.A person in that situation cant take anything.Just leave her on her own.Time may come when she herself will like a change.no movies ,no friends, nothing can do anything.just give her time to get a new life.

Yeah, I know time heals all wounds... but then again it got to the point where she wouldn't go out of her room anymore, won't respond to text messages, and we're afraid that if she wallows too much or any longer (it's been 2 weeks) she might end up doing something to herself. We just couldn't stand sitting idly by as she falls into that downward spiral of depression..
Anyway, it's just something to cheer her up even in the slightest way and also a way to show our support. Something to make her feel alive again. I guess that ultimately it's her decision to make when and how she snaps out of her heart-broken stupor, but until she does we feel an obligation to help her struggle her way out of it :)
Thanks for the advice :)

It's been awhile since I've seen "Circle of Friends" with Minnie Driver but I recall that it is a very touching movie about learning to love ourselves. I think I did sniffle a bit so maybe not a good choice for your friend right now!

It's really sweet of you to be throwing something for your friend. The feeling after a break-up really sucks, and that's the time when you'll need all the support from the people around you and to keep them busy. If you plan to watch something with her then 500 Days of Summer would be perfect. It's a bit comedic, and at the same time shows that after a really gory break-up a new (and better) one comes along soon. I hope your friend feels better soon. Regards!

WE love 500 Days of Summer (especially the vintage clothes!)! But we don't think that's what we're looking for right now. We're trying to steer away from movies with love/breakup stories in it... Maybe when she can smile again and has recovered a bit we could watch that movie again :)
Yeah, I've we've all had our own breakup experiences but sharing it with friends makes it a bit easier to bear, doesn't it? THanks for the concern and the advice :)

ummmm can't remember the title of it but it surely not about breaking up, not a love story and not drama... Me and my friends chose the funny ones and scary ones so that we can scream to the top of or lungs so we can let go of the heavy burden inside our hearts and mind... thats my advice to you guys think of a happy thoughts to move on...

Yeah, based on the comments I think we should really strike off some off the more heavy-drama inspirational/feel-good movies from the list. In fact your line "think of a happy thoughts" just reminded me of Hook (the movie) and I just had a idea to include carefree happy kid movies! Maybe those with a little song-and-number won't be so bad. Thanks :)

I think best film for such kind of siutation would be HOlIDAY starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jake Black. Best movie just watch
other movies would include THE NOTEBOOK, CARS, TITANIC , PS I LOVE YOU, THE WALK TO REMEMBER, etc etc.
Just chill at this point of time and never be over depressed as it seems to be kiddish there are many more people in this world who are trustworthy

Hmm.. I think we should stay away from love stories for now. Cars, though is a happy carefree light movie that I think will make it to the list. thanks thanks thanks! :)

Oh no if we'd watch The Notebook we'll end up crying buckets! That's what happened the last time we girls got together for a sappy love-story movie marathon. So no, I'm sorry, we'll have to cancel that for now and save it for when everybody's ready to fall in love again :)
Still, thanks for the thought. We appreciate it a lot :)

horror movies so they don't have to see the romantic movies with people loving up on each other. Or something really funny but I think you should stick to horror.

Thanks anurag :) Yeah, everybody seems to be suggesting either slasher or comedy movies. In fact I'm thinking of looking for local ones, might find some really funny local slapstick movies... Appreciate your suggestion, thanks again!
