I don't have any virus protection on my lap top right now and I can't really afford to buy any for a while either. Does anyone know if there are any decent free virus protectors out there to download? Have you ever used one and been happy with it? I realise they're not going to be as good as up to date ones that you need to purchase, but I just want something in the meantime.

you can also try installing "deep freez" on your computer. One you knew you installed all the application you need to run your PC,its the right time to install it because deep preez returns all your settings to original once you reboot. Your files will be intact but all unknown and unwanted installation and virus infection will be gone after reboot. Hope you can check it and I see it will satisfy your needs :) good luck!

I have a friend down the street who keeps my computers going. He has a couple and uses Avast on each of them. Yes, it worked well on my older laptop, but my others have ATT's protection brand.

I used to use AVG and it worked pretty well. I use Avast now, and personally, I prefer Avast over AVG, but both work really well for free software.

all virus protectors are the same but i would suggest for the most known ones and which is used by almost everyone especially corporations because they most likely are getting a lot of reports of a new virus and definitely they are doing something about it. I suggest ESET. temporarily, until you get one, you can use any free antivirus software in the likes of AVG, Avira or Antivir.

There's nothing wrong with these free antivirus programs that are available..they rank highly in the computer magazine comparison tests against their subscription based counterparts. I'm using Avast! at the moment..I have had no problems with it,and it auto updates itself..

I too can not afford to purchase an anti-virus so I am using the free version of Avast and I LOVE it! I was using AVG before because a family member suggested I try it and I ended up getting a few viruses that it didn't tell me about! Thank goodness I got everything fixed, but I wasn't too impressed that it didn't tell me!

AVG free is very good.
avast isn't bad,but kind of overprotective.flags a lot as threats.
F-prot i think is also still around.
you might want to add spybot.catches a lot of attackers and ones that try to write to your registry.

Hi Coffee,
If you want a really good ani-spyware then use SuperAntiSpyware, get the free edition, it gets rid of every malicious things you get on your computer it has even got rid of trojans on mine-it is the only anti-spyware I recommend and swear by, please try it. The only thing it wont do for the free edition is scan when you want it too you have to scan it yourself but truly it is a superb one to have...LoLo

Well I don't really now... I have iAntiVirus but it's only for Mac (Macintosh)... The only thing you need is a Mac! Cause Macs have like SO much less viruses than Windows computers... Macs have viruses too but I have never encountered one myself. So just get a Mac and forget the pain Windows gives you :D

I've used AVAST for years without any problems. The free version is good, and comes with regular updates - also free. I'd personally recomend it.

Don't you have an old version?
It is better to have a 12 month out of date anti-virus than none at all.
The old one will still give you 70% to 80% protection.
The updates only give you protection against the latest viruses.
But you are more likely to be attack by an old one than a new one.

There are several out there, but the one that I am currently using is avast. It has done pretty good for me. You can find it at avast.com and choose to download the home version, it is free and they send out updates. I know there are others and I am sure someone else can tell you something else. Best wishes in finding one that works for you.

I am over cautious because I have AVG, Malware and I Obit Security on my lap top along with another couple of spyware software like Spybot and Super Antispyware. They were all free. AVG is set to scan once a day and the others I use to scan every week. So far I have found them all to be very good and by running all of them what one misses the others are bound to pick up.

Hello coffeeshot! I know you have many options so far. I have tryed AVG and I don't like it very much, Avast makes your computer slow down. Nod32, Norton, McAfee and others are not for free!
I really really suggest Avira. Its for free, you can have it at download.com!! It works very good, and detects up to 99% of viruses! I have been using it for a few months and it has stop many troyans and stuff. Plus my computer works at the same speed and it causes no problem.
I hope I could help! Keep mylotting, Libna.

There are a lot of free antivirus softwares out there. What matters is what you want out of an antivirus. If you want a heavy program (memory consuming) but good protection, choose mcafee. If you want a lightweight program that does everything you need without hogging all your computer's resources, I'd say you go for Nod32's antivirus 4 or nod32's Security suite or Alwil software's Avast! antivirus.
I have personally tried the free versions of those i mentioned above and i was pretty satisfied with them. They gave me the protection i needed while they lasted. if you can't buy antivirus now, i suggest you switch between the three for now. Like install nod32 for now until the trial expires then avast then any other free antivirus you would like. uninstall the expired trial version when it expires and then install another fresh trial from another software company. that way, you'll stay protected.
when you have the money though, try to buy one since it's a good investment. nod32 and mcafee are a little pricey though. kapersky is another good option for paid antivirus. for more information about antiviruses out there so that you could make your decisions, try visiting sites that conduct benchmark tests like av-comparatives.org.
Have a great day! ^_^
