Hello Myloters,
This is one thing that I always do and I never learn from it. Because I get use to of a culture that when somebody is in the que behind you, you have to hurry to give them time as soon as you can. But doing this I often just hurried up to put change into my wallet without counting it. Just last week I bought some food and because there was a long que behind me soon as the sales person gave me the money I just put it in my bag without counting it and when I get home I look at my change there was about $5 short. I could not go back because I lost the receipt already and the cost of taxi would be more of what I lost. That's why I prefer using card than cash but where I come from its more of cash transaction.
How about you, do you count your change all the time?
Thanks Myloters and have a nice day everyone.

i use my credit card more to pay for my purchases because it is safer and more convenient for me... but in the place where i really have to use cash, i always make sure that i count the change very carefully before i put it into my wallet... every penny counts for me and i don't like to be cheated... so i don't care whether there are a long queue behind me... i will still count my change first before i leave the register... take care and have a nice day...

Me too.. I don't usually count my change as well. It's either there's a long queue behind me or I'm in such a hurry that I just place my change inside my bag or purse without counting them. I know it's not a good practice because chances are, my change might be incorrect and I wouldn't even have a clue. Just like what happened to you.. so I guess to prevent that from happening again we should start counting our change before leaving the counter or taxi or anywhere. =)

I agree with you diyonzi. Although sometimes its not only because of the people behind the queue its because of the cashier, they call next person behind you soon as they place your change in your hand. Its pretty rude really so I think its really just make an effort to count change all the time so people do this dont do it often.

Well, I have taken up accountancy during my college days. My professor always told me to never trust anyone when it comes to money. Always count them. It could be probably and honest mistake or perhaps there was an effort for someone to give us a lesser amount amount to gain more... but this can be prevented by counting the money while the person is still there in front of you to avoid further problems.

Hi jpso138,
Thanks for the response. Yeah I guess nowadays that thieving is becoming common to some people I think its should be a hobbit of every individual to count there change. Will I have to apply this to to myself even if it felt like an inconvenience.

Well, normally.. The person at the register counts out the change as they hand it back to you. Though, normally I do recount it as I place it back into my wallet. Coins I am never too concerned about. I keep a close eye on the register and the calculations, and watch them get the money out. It may be concerning to be watched like that, but I really don't care. I'm just looking to get what it mine and get out.
I know people all over the place who get jipped when they get their change back, but I've never actually had it happen to me. Though, once they gave me a bit more than I was supposed to get back. And of course I took it back in, because I don't want karma and my conscious to bite me in the butt.
So, in essence, I count and recount the change. Three times total. When they get it out, when they hand it to me, and when I place all of it into my wallet. =)

Will, I sort of trust the person in the counter some people are so dishonest and they test the water see if that person will count change and when they do they have this very easy reason of "oh I am sorry maam". It always happen to me and sometimes its annoying because when they apologize you cant really do anything about it.
Like you said, karma is always there but it look like to some people it doesn't work.

I agree with you but sometimes it just feel like another task that's shouldn't be there and people should be just honest.
Sometimes I just cant believe how people do this can sleep.

Hello Eve!
I usually forget to count my change and check the receipt which is a very bad habit. I haven't even noticed if I've was given a short change ever in my life because I normally don't double check! Anyway, I'm trying to straighten up this bad habit now thanks to your post. I could be losing a lot already because of this habit of not counting my change. Thanks for the helpful reminder Eve! Very helpful post. Kudos!

I am always reminded by this practice every-time I go to bank. They are always reminding their clients to always count the money you have received. Before, I am used to slipping my change inside my pocket right after I received the them. But today I would see to it that I have received the exact change, even in the malls, you have really to be watchful in receiving the change, because the counter lady would count it for you.
God bless and happy mylotting...

As much as possible, I count my change before I leave the counter. It's better safe than sorry. But like you, I have had times when I just shove the change in my purse, bag or pocket because I was in a hurry. It happens, and it's a risk we take I guess.

i used of not to count change before and its already too late to find out that they took some from the change. usually im being like this if im too busy and if i carry a lot of things in my hand. i just drop the money in my bag and go home it happened to me many times. and so from that lesson. no matter how busy i am nor how much load i carry i really make sure to count every change i have. its not easy to get money now a days.

I'm used to shops assistants that not only say out loud how much money did you gave them, but them to count out loud how much do they give you in change while they count it in front of you, so I don't have any need to count my change. At first this shocked me a little, but now I find it pretty useful

Sometimes, I do. And actually I go to the extend of counting how much my purchase is in order to ensure I wasn't overcharged. But as I mentioned, I don't always count my change because same as you, I am always trying to be as quick as possible to make way for the people behind. And in recent years, card transactions are becoming a norm around where I am and thus, nowadays I make card transactions than cash. But for small purchases, then I will give cash and I tend to stick to giving the cents so I can get back the dollars. For example, my purchase is $4.30, so I will make a $5.30 payment to get back $1. But there are times when I run out of the cents and that's the few occasions that I don't count my change.
Definitely it's a good practice to verify the change because it is our hard-earned money.

I always count my change because it happened to me many times already that change it lacking or more. And I always have to have to return the excess and get back what was lacking. Its a goo way to teach each other to be honest. I have learned from my husband that we should never teach people to be dishonest so we also have to be honest in dealing with others.

i always do count my change. its a practice i've been doing since i was a child. i don't wanna get gypped by cashier. and most establishments here in our country has this small note that keeps reminding every customer to count their changes before leaving the cashier. so its okay even if there's a long queue behind me.

I’ve got into the habit of quickly checking that the bulk of the change correct when it is handed back to me as in the correct number of £s, but don’t pay attention to the small change. Although it annoys some people I like the old fashioned shops where they actually take the time to count out the change to you rather than just handing it back. It certainly helps stop mistakes from being made.

I always count my changes especially if the changes is many and entails a big amounts of money whereby if it only small changes like a few cents i never dare to count it and just pick up the few cents or just put it in the donation box beside the cashier. Those who are in queuing they have to wait until i finish counting since it s my way to secure that the change is correct and since i could count fast their would be no problem with me as they do not need to wait longer.

Yes, I count my change. I've learned to do this based on experience. Sometimes, vendors take advantage of people in a hurry and doesn't give the exact change. There are bus conductors who also does this especially during rush hour. That's why I learned to be street smart. Because there are lots of cruel people out there.

I count the change while putting it on my wallet. This is because I usually just bring a certain amount of money per day, to help me stop from spending too much. (haha.) I have to keep track of what's left. I mean, I have to leave out some of it for my fare back home.
