Living Without Electricity

February 25, 2010 1:47pm CST
We have had some really bad storms over the last few days in my part of the world, and Tuesday was no exception. During Tuesday morning we had a power cut which lasted almost five hours. In our house everything but the hot water runs on electricity and by 3pm I was getting in a panic about it all. I had no way to cook dinner, no way to heat the house, no lights, no Internet, no TV and no landline telephone. This is what brought me to think of this question; How long do you think you could cope without electricity in your home? 1 hour, 3 hours, a whole day or maybe more? I look forward to your responses!

Hi, Beautyfactor. If my lights went out in the daytime, I could probably manage just a little. I could go for 4 or 5 hours. I would need my electricity to be able to have my lights on and for other things too. I am sorry about the weather being so bad and all. We have not had any storms here at all. I hope that you all will have electricity and not be in any shortages at all. Stay safe and I will be praying for you too.

I have had my lights turned off due to nonpayment. And it was no fun at all. So, I could not imagine having no lights and electricity. I hope that it will get better for you all where you live at. When a storm comes here, it will blink out lights on and off and it will never turn completely off. It has never gotten that far at all. Stay safe and take care of yourself.

When I was a kid, there was no electricity. No tv, only radio powered by alternative batteries. We just used lamp during night, and we slept early about 6PM... I have the idea about electricity when we transferred to one of the village next to our town... there we enjoyed the light brought about my florescent lamps... and TV shows... and now that I am used to it and depended most of my daily activities for it... maybe I would grieve for a whole day black out...

Hi there! I also experienced that when our place was hit by a storm. we don't have electricity for like 3 weeks. It was kind of hard because I have a 2 year old kid so she can't sleep because it was kind of hot. So I stayed awake almost the whole nights. We don't have water supply, too. But I don't have any choice but to live with it. Well, I just prayed that it won't last that long. It's really like you are already in hell. LOL

I've been through such situations before. Last winter we had an incredibly furious snow storm, so we were for like 24h without electricity. I would say that biggest problem about that is that you can't prepare food. And another serious problem is boredom. It's very boring to sit in the dark with nothing to do. We usually start to play word games, like naming cities or countries, with my family. During that snowstorm me and my friend also went outside to hang around the dark town and help to push the cars that have been stuck in snow.

Hi beautyfactor Even in our area due to the power cut we will be spending 2 hours without the power every day. One hour in the morning and one hour in the evening. But during that 1 hour I feel as if i am spending the day without power for 1 day. Every minute is a restless minute for me because in my house too everything including cordless phone needs current.

Hi, I think it was about 10 yrs ago, we had a huge power black out in the whole province. Lucky for us, the total amount without power was about a week. We bought a generator and we have a fireplace, so all in all, we did rather well. Hubby would switch the generator to the freezer, the fridge, the hot water heater and all in all, it was nearly life as usual. I was working from home then and I could still work. Hubby had to stay home as he was rather busy filling the generator and getting gas and switching the appliances around so everything to be running smoothly. I used it as an excuse to order out instead of cooking for a few days haha. So if its to happen again, we're ready.

i think i cant handle a life or even a day without electricity. specially now, i just stay at home since i dont have work an currently pregnant, the only things that entertain me is to watch television or browse internet. the climate right now, i cant without a fan to make me feel fresh. i guess its so hard coz almost all appliances in at home are powered by electricity.

I can not take few hours without electricity. I don't know if I can take a day without electricity. I haven't experienced it though (I mean 1 day without electricity) but I don't think I can cope without it. We used to have a generator at home. And it was actually an industrial generator which my parents used at their garments factory before. But now, it's busted. =( Our water also runs on electricity. So no electricity means no water for us. Recently, it was reported on TV that we will be having some electricity shut down. Thank God it didn't happen. And I hope it won't ever happen.

I've had to go without power for four days once. We had a huge power outage, and it was rediculous. I could barely breathe because it was during the summer and the heat kept trying to literally chocke me. It was during 04 when all of those hurricanes hit.

In Aussie we have this day (forgot what its called) that you turn off all the lights, all the electricity and all that stuff for that night. I think it starts at 6pm (after workdays), It is to bring awareness for the earth and all those stuff. I think once in a while it is quite fun, we could do BBQ have friends over and enjoy the time together. Without any TV or computer to distract we could really have fun with each other. For lighting you can use candle :)

Isn't it true, though, that we take so much for granted. No, I couldn't get by for long without electricity. I depend on it for so many things. We have electric heat, as a matter of fact, so I don't think we could survive for even one day in the winter time.

For me, this would be very difficult. I get around in an electric wheelchair. If I didn't have electricity one of my assistants would have to push me everywhere I went. Or, at least mostly everywhere. I could push a little but not very quickly. I also use the cell phone to communicate with the people that are staying over in case I need anything during the night. I can't yell especially not when I'm laying on my back, but I can call on the cell phone to the house phone and that works pretty well. Of course, if I had to I could live without electricity. I would have to get used to not having a computer or a TV or a VCR. I think I would get pretty tired of it pretty quickly, and I know my assistants would just because they'd have to push me around everywhere and stay in the room with me in case I needed anything. Still, I'm sure if push came to shove we'd manage. We're pretty inventive women.

We were without power for 4 days after a hurricane came through my state but it wasn't too difficult because the weather wasn't bad. It was late October so it wasn't terribly hot here. It was reeeeally boring...our portable radio was our best friend and our only link to the outside world. We were able to cook because we have a propane gas grill and I always keep food on hand that can be easily cooked on it.

I don't think I can last 20minutes. That is my maximum. I'm currently situated here in the Philippines. I've been here for years. But for someone who grew up in New Jersey -- I'm still not used to it. At times, the heat is ok. But most of the time, I just cannot function well in hot condition. I always rely on ACs, fan or what-have-yous to keep my body temperature at ease. Plus, I'm a real techie. I won't be able to live without gadgets, and gadgets require electricity. So to be honest, just 20minutes. Beyond that -- aaaarrrggggh! I would be taking the next flight to Jersey. Hahaha.
