this week I received the bad news that I have high cholesterol. The blood results came positive and I went to the doctor for advice. My LDL Cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is high 5.71 when the expected range is 0.1 - 3.88 mmol/l. Although its not the end of this word I am worried stiff cos I always considered myself as a healthy person. The doctor told me to do without mushrooms, sweets, ice creams etc, puffy pastries, prawns, red meat etc. My favourite snack is pastizzi, which is a Maltese speciality a puff pastry filled with ricotta. What types of food do you have to do without?

I am sure it sucks to have high cholesterol especially since it makes you have to avoid certain foods, and thankfully I do not have it yet even though both my parents do so I will probably get it,just like I got high blood pressure just like both of them have, and when it comes to foods I have to avoid there are not that many, but one that comes to me right off the top of my head is oranges since I am allergic to them so I can not eat them, and I can not drink orange juice either, and I am also supposed to avoid chocolate because I am allergic to it as well but I eat chocolate every once in a while because it is too good to avoid, even though I try to avoid most sweets because I am trying to lose weight and get in shape.

It seems that we have the same target
It's very easy to gain weight.
Unfortunately its seems very difficult to lose it.

I am sure a lot of people have the same target and it is very easy to gain weight and it is always almost impossible to lose weight and that is why so many people are battling with their weight.

Darn..I love my mushrooms and all those other foods you suggested it would be hard going without them. It will be very hard. I didn't know that mushrooms(unless breaded and deep fried) were bad for your cholesterol. I will have to let my parents know because my mom does eat them and so do I on a regular basis.

HI mtdewgurl74. It's my mistake. Doc told me to keep away from mussels and all shellfish. In a lapsus he mentioned mushrooms and then absent mindedly I wrote mushrooms here instead of writing down mussels. Mushrooms are healthy.

I'm a diabetic, so basically I have to stay away from sweets, but I also have to stay away from white starchy foods because it all turns to sugar, and that's mostly what I love to eat all the good starchy food..lol. I still eat it but its all in moderation, I've been diabetic so long that I know what all my body can handle and how much of this and that I can have before I need to quit.

I am glad that you are taking care of your health.
It's difficult to keep away from tempting food such as sweets chocolates, etc.

Hey ronaldinu! I have already told you that I too have very
high cholesterol, but am on meds to control it! My problem now
is that the meds affect my liver! I have to go and get a blood
test because my last blood test showed my liver values were
elevated which is not a good thing and that is from the meds!
That might mean a change in meds (after almost 15 years) or
I don't even know! I try to watch my diet, but love red meat
which I know is really bad for me! I don't like fish, but do
eat alot of chicken! But, sadly most of my diet consists of
red meat still! I am lactose intolerant so I stay away from
cheese and milk products! I know that it is really hard to
change your diet believe me! But, it is necessary for you to
try or you will end up on meds like me! Try to do your best
Ronaldiniu! You are still young and it can be corrected some
times! Mine wasn't able to be corrected with diet changes, but
that is not always the case!

I am trying to eat more healthy, introducing more veggies in my diet.
Thanks for your advice and I hope that you stay away from red meat. I love red meat too and its difficult for me to stay away from it. But I don't want to be on medicine to control my cholesterol.

I should eat like you are supposed to, but I do not anymore. I try to limit fat and sugar but I still have it. I know I cannot eat icecream because it puts the weight on me like THAT! *snaps fingers* So now if I eat it, I need to be careful when I have it. I looove ice cream! :(
I have not been much of a salt eater in my life, but there are times I get cravings and have to limit it because I am now prone to high blood pressure.
That Maltese treat sounds very yummy!

Maltese pastizzi are yummy but unfortunately they use a lot of lard so that it becomes flaky! So its very unhealthy for those who have high cholesterol. A friend of mine does pastizzi but use real butter instead of lard when doing the pastizzi dough.

Every morning I crave for fried chinese noodles for breakfast and this I understand is very fattening and is high in cholesterol. I haven't checked my cholesterol level yet but I am already on BP medications. High cholesterol is as bad as having high bp. It is a silent killer. It doesn't choose its candidate, you can be a young robust guy but having a high cholesterol without control means an early grave. So do be very careful as I have heard of people just collapse and die.

I have high blood pressure that goes up when I eat salt or salty things. So I must go without adding salt or salty things. Esp. canned foods that were made with added salt.

Hi ronald, So far there are no foods that I can't eat and I'm sure that I should be very grateful for that. So many of my friends can't have sugar in their tea or coffee and are always talking about not being able to eat this or that food. I really can't say why I have remained so healthy but I guess it's in the genes. My father lived to age 95 and my mother 86 and I can't remember there ever being a time when they couldn't eat anything they wanted. Blessings.

I have raised BP; cholesterol and blood sugar Unfortunately, I have a family history of all three so i'm on a hiding to nothing. if I cut out all the foods I shouldn't eat I probably should just stop eating altogether. (I'm sure its the fruit I eat to keep the cholesterol down thats put the sugar up but, of course, they dont warn you about that.) i just do my best to try and keep a sensible balance. Luckily, I like jacket potatoes and cottage cheese.

Since I have some spasmic bladder problems I have to avoid caffeine and since my blood pressure is in prehypertension stage I have to avoid salt and avoid alot of sweets(Even thought I am not Diabetic) at first it was hard but then I came to realize how nasty overly salted food tastes. If I do have to add salt to pasta I only add sea salt to it but only a tsp otherwise I get a nast headache which leaves me hiding in the dark.

i had a similar occurence a few weeks ago where I went to the doctor and we found out i had relatively high uric acid for someone my age. they were quite shocked since they told me i shouldn't have those levels this early on as it is usually affiliated with arthritis whose onset is seen among people in their later years. I was given a list of stuff I had to stay away from but the most notable that that I would have to stay away from which will trigger a spike in my levels would be peanuts and food with sesame seeds. so no peanuts and no burgers for me.
