What problems have you had with shopping on the internet ?

February 28, 2010 5:02am CST
I'm a big fan of internet shopping and have been very lucky with the service I have had. However, my sister recently had a real battle on her hands because she paid for an item but it never arrived. She ended up losing her money. Another friend paid for an item but then found they'd taken the amount from her credit card three times and she has never managed to get the money back. She was so afraid that they were going to continue taking money that she had to cancel her credit card. Has anyone else had a problem and does anyone know any steps you can take to protect yourself?

I have used ebay for two different items... One arrived in a timely manner, still waiting on the other one to show up... Its been two weeks now.. Not sure if it is taking longer just because of the fact that it is coming from another country or what... I will still get a couple items online.. There are a couple things that I keep in mind when I am shopping.. Compare prices on an item at a few different sites.. the price for the item itself, the amount for shipping, and any additional cost... Second of all, I would never use a credit card directly online.. There are too many open doors, people that could get that information and use it for their advantage.... I would agree that your sister should cancel her credit card before the bill is crazy high, and wrecks her credit for a long time... But I would suggest for future shopping online use a third party, like pay pal or alert pay... These are actually money marketing accounts that work a lot like a bank, but the money that you put in there creates interest on itself.. and it seems to be a lot easier to stop fraud then through a bank account or a credit card company. I hope your sister is able to get that credit card taken care of.. Oh did she contact the company right away when she noticed the extra payments that were taken out?? Also she can complain or write a review on the person or the place that did this to her warning others of what could happen.. Good Luck

Two weeks doesn't seem too long for something to arrive from a foreign country so you may get your second product after all! My sister's problem is all sorted now - but it took a while to get sorted and she was getting very angry!

I don't use my credit card online anymore for pretty much the same reasons as your sister. If a merchant I am dealing with online doesn't use paypal, I find someone else. Recently I activated my ebay account preparing for my trip to Britain. I was looking for a passport/ticket wallet to keep those essentials separate from my regular wallet. And I got hooked! LOL I've shopped for all kinds of things there now, and so far no probs. If there are, ebay and paypal solve the issue or reimburse me, so it's a win win. Now I'm addicted and when the hubs finds out he's gonna kill me!

I have purchased quite a few tops from ebay. Some have already arrived and I couldn't be more pleased. I've got middle aged spread these days, so no svelte waistline anymore! LOL And that makes it hard to find stylish tops here. But on e-bay I found that the Korean, Chinese and Japanese sellers's tops are really really stylish and long enough to cover that middle aged spread. The trick is to read their descriptions really carefully so you get a size that fits properly. By Western standards I'm a medium, but by Eastern standards, I''m extra large! LOL A lot of them ship for free or low shipping charges too, so for about $50.00 bucks I've a whole new wardrobe. I love it!

I've bought a couple of things from eBay without any problems, so maybe that's the answer - the site seems to sell everything anyone could ever want!

Must credit card companies take this kind of problem very seriously, get in touch with the card company and kick up a fuss and they should get their money back ok.

Thank you for that advice. It's worth being reminded that credit cards reimburse you if there's a problem.

I've been very lucky not to have major problems with my internet purchases. A few times I did not get an item, but in every case I was sent another item. The only other thing was a comforter I bought that turned out to be very thin, with the feathers very oddly disbursed with no way to fix it; my fault for buying a cheap comforter...it would have cost me too much in shipping to bother returning it. A few ideas for protecting yourself when making online purchases: 1)Buy from known sellers, and reputable sites such as Amazon. Even Ebay is more reliable than it used to be, since they have added more protection for buyers. (However, if you're asked to pay via wire transfer...don't do it.) Of course your best bet safety-wise is to go to the web site of an actual store, but that limits you a bit. 2)Pay with PayPal if you can, so you do not have to give the merchant your credit card information. BUT, make sure your PayPal password is a strong password, and different from all your other ones. Or, pay with a prepaid card. 3)If you pay by credit (not sure if it applies to debit), call the credit card company as soon as there is a problem to dispute the payment. 4)If you get an email that appears to be from a store, make sure the link goes to the official web site, before entering any kind of payment info. I'd hate to tell you how many emails I get from "Best Buy"...but they don't lead to bestbuy.com, so out they go. Hope that helps! :)

That's a great response. I will remember it and pass it on to my family and friends. Thank you.

Your friend who had the problem with her credit card should be able to cliam the money back through her credit card company if she informs them of the problem. That is the advantage to credit cards, they will redeem any money for you and persuit the company themselves. As for personal experiences, I have to say that I have been lucky too. I tend to by most of my things from the same online shops. If I have had a good service, then I will go back time and time again. The only place where friends of mine have experienced problems is with Ebay where they have paid for items and thay have never arrived.

Thank you for this reply. I'll tell her about the credit card - that's very useful to know.

my friend had met that cituation you said, sometimes I find the item I bought are different from the picture when I got it

That can be a real problem, I've found. I've ordered clothes before and the quality has not been as good as it appeared in the picture. Unfortunately, you can't judge the material via a computer screen.

I like to shop online. I can find cool stuff that I can't find here. Plenty of nifty boutiques. I have had lots of good experiences, but I had one bad E-Bay experience. I was obsessed with "Back to the Future" a while back and ordered the animated series. This guy, who claimed he had a box set, took my money and sent me some bootleg crap. I complained and got my funds back. At least, E-bay was responsible.

I'm glad that eBay did the right thing and reimbursed you. I suppose there must be a certain percentage of people who sell on eBay who aren't honest.

The biggest problem I encountered was the sizing. There was an instance that I had to ship it back and shoulder the shipping because the shoes I bought were too small. So far, that was the biggest challenge I got.
1 Mar 10
I agree about the sizing. Even in shops you can't really rely on the labels as the sizing differs between firms.

I'm also a regular online shopper and so far I've been pleased with the service. But not everyone is as lucky as I am. We can encounter many problems in online shopping compared with shopping in real life. There are mainly two big problems concerning online shopping: security and quality of products. When we buy things online, we care about whether the item will be delivered on time after we had paid for it. Moreover, the quality of products is also important. We want to buy good things with much money.

Two very good points. I think we all learn about internet shopping by trial and error.

I have had very good luck as well. I did have a scam thing happen to me where I got some information from a site that was for free but I didn't read the small print that said I would be charged from here on out. I went through my bank and they helped me get my money back and I called the company and stopped service. You really have to be proactive. I buy things online all the time from books to clothing and I have had good luck and very good service.
1 Mar 10
That's a good lesson to learn - always read the small print. I must admit I sometimes scan over agreements and that's not very sensible!

I haven't done much of online shopping. I purchased only four things and all from the same website. Everything came on time and in good condition. This increased my faith in that website. I also recommended the website to my friends. Once they send me a card, which I ordered with incorrect text. The next day, they realized it and send me the correct one. It is good to shop form online malls only after getting feedback from some people. We can't trust all sites.

I'm glad your experience has been good. Internet shopping is like all shopping - you have to be careful.

Hello louisefrank I have bought some stuff before on the internet. Although in my country is a bit different. If someone is in my city, we just meet in some place in the city to make the deal, but if the seller is from another province, then is kind of the same as for example in ebay. I havent buy any item that was broken or anything, every deal i have made has turned out good. Your sister should talk with the credit card company and try to recover her money. I think paypal is safer for disputes online, so in the future maybe you could try buying using paypal.
1 Mar 10
A couple of people have mentioned that Paypal is safer for online payments so I will pass that advice on to my sister. Thank you for your help.

You've been lucky - and it's very wise to try to stick to trusted sites.

I haven't had really any problems, and I've purchased a lot of things online. One time I ordered an embroidered baby blanket, and it came with a misspelling. The company took it back and sent me a new one without any problem. Another time I ordered some Christmas stockings and they looked puffier in person than they had looked on the website, but that was a minor thing. Overall I've been pleased with my online shopping experiences.
28 Feb 10
I'm glad to hear your experience has been mainly positive. When I hear other people's bad experiences I start to worry a bit, although, for myself, I've never had a problem.

so far, i dont have any problem shopping online maybe because i make sure to check the credibility of the seller before i send payment. and i only shop in ebay where i already considered as trusted. theres still scam even in ebay but of course as a buyer its our responsibility to check and found out if the seller can be trusted or not. we can check their credibility by checking comments from their previous buyers and make sure its not a bogus buyer coz sometimes its also the seller who pretend. the more comments from different seller is fine specially if those buyers are also been with ebay for long time.

This has happened to a lot of people I know but there is nothing you can do because when it happens it happens. But many times I have ordered from the internet and it did come I guess you just have to know your websites or you can just go to the store and buy what you need.
28 Feb 10
You're right. Most well-known firms are obviously reputable. I guess a little research on the internet before you order would be wise. Thank you.

Internet shopping is really a good service. But all of them are not 100% free from problem. After all "prevention is batter then cure". But if already scared then aid need. You can communicate with credit card authority to solve this problem. I think it is a miss use or technical problem.
28 Feb 10
Thank you. I think the internet is great for shopping too, but I suppose, as with all shopping, you must be wary.
