Obesity, weight loss, and knee problems

Hi everyone! I've been obese since I was eleven and I am planning to lose weight. But the heavy weight does not stop me at times. I was pretty agile and can run as fast as the thinnest person in our class. I am pretty sporty as a kid but I guess my diet overweighed that. Because of the weight, I have the condition called "chondromalacia." I would feel crepitus or sort of rubbing sensation when I place my palms over my knee when I move it slowly sideways. There's degeneration of the knee cartilages because of the weight and I think cartilages don't heal that fast or don't heal at all. I'm thinking of low impact exercises to keep my knee from getting worse. Although, I see the biggest loser contestants bigger than me and they do intense workouts. That makes me wonder, does any other obese people like me experience chondromalacia too? I don't want it to get in the way of exercise. Also, isn't it that exercise helps build up bone mass and thus it would help relieve chondromalacia? Thanks and have a great day!

Hi! This is an alternative way i would share to you that will help you to loose weight in a natural way and your body organs will keep healthy. This is a weight management program(they called it RESET) by USANA. About your knee cartilage problem i will suggest to take also PROCOSA it is a food supplement(also a USANA products) that is good for the cartilage, it will repair the damaged cartilage. Check my website: http://francisk.usana.com...additional info: www.usana.com/RESET Thanks and Have a great day ahead!

I'm not sure about the scientific answers to your questions, but I do know that water aerobics and swimming is a really good low impact way to start losing weight without aggravating your knee. Maybe the people on the biggest loser have been more sedentary than you so it hasn't effected their joints as much. I don't think cartilage heals. I think they have to go in and replace stuff surgically to fix it. Hopefully you find the answers you want!

Hello harmonee Thank you very much for your reply and tips. Oh yeah, I remember seeing that one in Biggest Loser Asia when some of them were complaining with lower extremity pain and the trainer made them do water exercises. I love water and I love swimming. There's no better timing than now because it's already summer here in the Philippines. It's supposed to start on April but we currently have the "El Nino" Phenomenon which makes the climate really hot. Oww...too bad for my cartilages. I hope experts would figure out a way to restore them. Thanks again and have a good day!

Try yoga. Yoga is one of the best ways of losing weight. Of course I can’t go into a full lecture about yoga over here but I can tell you that I have never seen people with better-toned bodies than those who practice yoga. One of the benefits of yoga is that you learn to control virtually every muscle and joint of your body so that the issue of weight gain will cease to exist.

I think the best thing you can do is first start with your diet... control your consumption of fatty and high-calorie containing food. By doing this, you can control the intake of fat and calories that highly contribute to your obesity. Eat more fruits (fibrous)and veggies. Then you can do simple yet effective exercises, like for example, some stretching exercises, walking at a certain distance (you can do this with your dog), a little push ups and sit ups (not to the extent that you hurt yourself),or you can go to a sauna to help you burn some fats (sauna is very beneficial to human health). These are simple exercises i can suggest so that you won't stress your knees too much yet there are other exercises available that you can do. Other people also experience chondromalacia because of their obesity, this is common to obese people since their body weight exceeds the tolerable weight their lower body can carry ( specially the knee) thus affecting the cartilages on the knees and later develop pain in the said area.

Hi careal Thank you very much for your reply and suggestions. Recently, I have been cutting down food portions. I always try to put in mind that when taste buds hunger for food, it doesn't mean the stomach is hungry too. When I can, I try to buy healthy snacks. I also do some activities to distract me from grabbing a snack. I also did some 1-hour exercises in the past few weeks but nothing happened. I guess the narrow sidewalks, bad paths, and evading cars slowed me down at times making me not tired as I'm supposed to be. We have a treadmill though so I'll use that. Thanks for the tips and take care!
