I have never run a garage sale, but tomorrow my parents are having one. This is a first for them too. Tonight I have to put out the signs. I have boxes with a label on each of them & we put them on street corners. I also put up signs in two local shoping centres. My parents are selling household goods, tools and books.I'm going to stay there all day with them, as they are elderly. Mum is worried, as some rain is forecast and we dont know if it's just showers or a lot of rain. Have you ever run a garage sale? What kind of items did you sell? Did you make a profit?

I've only ever had one garage sale - when we retired, sold the cane farm and bought a house in town. I got rid of a lot of rubbish collected over the years. How true that one man's rubbish is another man's treasure! What was left after the sale, we bundled up and took into the Salvos. I've never been to a garage sale, but I know people who do it every Saturday morning and enjoy it as a day's outing. I hope your parents manage to clear all their items.

My brother visits garage sales regularly. He picks up some great bargains and then resells them on ebay. Wish I had the know how to do that.

Garage sells are awesome! They are one of the easiest and quickest ways to make a quick profit, especially if you have some old things lying around the house and you need to get rid of them! Like others said Clothes are a great money maker! Hope they do great with there garage sell! Hope you do not get rained out, that is why when we have one we have a covered area that we usually park our cars and we use that! We pretty much sell anything from clothes to books to furniture! Happy MyLotting!

My parents are going to use their carport which is covered. Iam making signs right now. I have never had the energy to do one myself. I visited a garage sale near my home toiday & quite a few people were coming and going.

Hi Jenny! We don't have garage sales here in Italy. I wish we did because I am a hoarder and I could get rid of so many things which I don't need and are only cluttering up the place now. I hope the weather doesn't spoil it for you and that many people turn up and make it worth all the effort that you have to put into it. Get back and let us know how it went

Does Italy have any kind of market where you can sell your unwantyed items? It poured with rain tonight so I was unable to put the signs out. I will have to do it early tomorrow morning if the rain holds off.

Oh wow! That was a brilliant result considering that the weather was not really on your side. Just think what it would have been if the sun had shone? So will they be having another one to sell the things that were still unsold?

Yes we have had quite a few of them. On our best one we made $225. We were mostly selling clothes, books, older electronic items, and miscellaneous other small items. I have friends who have made over $1,000. They had some of everything including furniture. Most of my friends tend to make in the $300-$500 range. We are having another one in May. I expect this one to be bigger than all the rest we have had. We have quite a bit more to sell this time around.

I have never had a garage sale. I have sold stuff at flea markets though, and made out pretty good. The only problem was the weather and having someone spell me for a little while so I could use the restroom. Mostly what I sold was Home Interiors items. They were pictures and sconces and stuff like that. I don't even know if they are still in business! I have enough junk I should do it again!

I tried selling at flea marketys abouyt three times in years past. You have to pay a fee, say $10 to do it. Sometimes the profits were so small, that it wasnt really worth it. At least garage sales have no overhead costs.

It is true you usually have to pay a fee for your space, but I usually did well enough that it was worth it. I guess it would be more convenient to have it at home, you could go to the bathroom or get something to eat if no customers were around!

We've done garage sales for fund raising in school. We sell old clothes and accessories. Yes, we've profited from it. Actually, it is one of the most effective ways in raising funds. You don't need a capital as you'll just sell your old stuff and that's already instant cash :) Oh yeah, I've also done one with my mom. We sold clothes and other things. Profit is good. It's not as high as what companies pay in a job but it's just enough to buy something for yourself :)

It's also a good way to get of your old stuff lying around. Garage sales for school fund raising is a very good idea. Clothes are popular. I sometimes find good books at garage sales.

My Mum organised all her prices before hand, and adjusted a few as the day went on. It is a great way to get rid of "s....".

We used to have them regularly at our first house. We would go through our things, have a yard sale, donate whatever was left at least once a year. Then we moved, had children and got bogged down in things. We are way overdue for a yard sale.

I’ve never done a garage sale myself but I love them! I love going to them and rummaging around other people’s things; I always find at least one bargain I like. Believe it or not when I was planning my wedding I came across the perfect bridesmaid’s dress for my sister (I only had one bridesmaid). It was the perfect colour and its design was amazingly similar to my gown, I could not believe it, it looked brand new and cost me around twenty bucks. I was so happy; all I had to do is have it altered to fit her. I’ve been married 14 years now and I still haven’t told her where I got that dress from! You probably had the garage sale by now, I hope it went well and your parents sold lots and made themselves some nice extra cash!

I have went to a lot of them but I have never had one. I do plan to have one this Spring though. I have a couple of friends that have them quite often and they say that they make money off their old stuff. They usually sell clothes and household goods when they have them. I'm going to have a lot of stuff to get rid of this year.

Garage sales are a great way to rid of unwanted items. If you have a lot of items, that will be even better for a garage sale, as people like to go to the bigger ones.

We had one last year selling things like exercise bench, a heater, books, vases, toys, mirror, glasses and chairs. There were other things but I can't remember at this time. The garage sale lasted maybe 3 hours and we made abot 82 dollars. Good luck to you and your parents for good weather and selling alot.

I have run lots of garage sales and usually make about $150 dollars, not to shabby. Furniture sells really well, and so does clothing (mostly kids clothes, but other clothes will be bought too) Believe it or not, canned goods sell pretty well. I always put sodas out and sell them too. Good luck!

canned goods! Thats interesting. Guess if someone bought up some canned goods when they are discounted at supermarkets, then resold them at a garage sale for say, 10% more, they would make a little profit. Is that how you do it? Good idea about the sodas too.

I have had one a time or two. I plan on doing more this spring/summer as this past winter I've been working on some of my Jewerly that I make. So I will be selling a lot of that as well as I've somehow managed to collect stuff that I really have no use for. When we do have we normally just post sign up and we usually do fairly well. I also enjoy going to them as well. Good luck tomorrow hopefully it wont rain if it doesn it wont that much.

I enjoyed doing garage sales with friends when younger, but never felt we made as much profit as we could have. I like shopping them, though. I outfitted my first granddaughter for about a year with what I bought on one Saturday when we had a city wide garage sale. I maybe spent ten dollars.

what do you consider a profit? the signage? the labels? and feeding yourselves? Heck, if I break even on that, I don't think its bad, and pretty much if you make a point of not spending a lot on that stuff you will make a profit - not going to get rich, but hey - the house has less stuff in it - right? just watch out, there are shoplifters even at garage sales!!! SLIME!

hi jennybianca I have surely gone to a lot of garage sales, but never ran one myself. I am told that its good if one marks each item with the price you have in mind then if you wish you can always haggle over it with the would be customer. I do hope it does not rain on your garage'sale. here in Ca we have rain predicted which I am pretty sure willcome as my arthritis in my shoulder is acting up tonight. I would suggest that you all pay a bit of attention as people come in and out, most people are honest but it does not hurt to be watchful. I have found some great buys at garage sales. I had a couple of limoges plates that are now in storage but I bought them for next to nothing. Here in Ca they sell all sorts of things from clothing to used exercise equipment. A lot of times people are urged to come early as there is more choice yet others are suggested to come at the last minute as so many will cut the prices way down on stuff they were unable to sell earlier. So if these hints help good. take care good luck G od Bless.

I also mentioned to my mother about putting prices on items, as she said many people at garage sales dont do this & it is inconvenient. Partly why Im going to help is because people sometimes steal, and my father has A..., so my Mum needs the help.
