The three best at the moment are Avira, Avast and AVG. I use Avast and am very happy with it. Before that I used AVG for many years.
The only carp I have with Avast is that it updates sometimes twice a day (which is good, of course) but tells you in an irritating voice which I so far haven't discovered how to switch off.

I highly recommend AVG. They offer a paid version as well as a free version. My husband and I have used it for many years and have had no issues with it.

I would suggest AVG which is a good one. AVAST is another good free anti virus. Both are capable to catch most viruses. Both are free. I have used both. I would add up Spybot search and destroy as an anti spyware. Be vigilant which site you browse into.

Have you tried Comodo Interner Security? It is a free, full featured suite. The latest version, CIS 4.0 is to me even better because by default all unrecognised programs are run in the sandbox. This feature can be switched off, or the status of a program can be changed so that it will run outside the box.
CIS gives the user the option to set up the security level. This gives us the chance to decide to allow or block certain programs from doing something, and either permanently or temporary. I like it ths way because for example at the highest level I can block a company from dissecting my computer system, and several programs from calling home.

Download Pc Tools ThreatFire. It works with your Anti virus program to prevent attacks BETTER than just an Anti Virus Program alone. It is now Free, Takes very little resource. Go to the site and read about it. I have been using it a long time and it works Very Well. A Must Have!

For a free anti-virus I always suggest AVIRA anti-virus, it has a high detection rate, infact there are viruses that can detect by AVIRA that cannot be detected by some paid anti-virus, AVIRA has also less false positive detection, and last it is very light on system resources,so you can use it like it was never exist on your computer unlike some anti-virus that will make your computer crawl like a snail.

If you have Windows 7 or vista, I suggest you go to microsoft site nad download its Microsoft Security Essentials. Unfortunately, it does not work on XP. It's totally free and very helpful. Updates are available almost everyday - you only have to allow automatic updates or you can do it manually. It removes viruses, worms, trojans and also malwares.

I was using AVG and a Lavasoft product (the name slips my mind), but a friend of mine, who is an IT guy, suggested I switch to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I made the switch and haven't had any problems. (You have to remember to update the software at least once a week with the free version, but that's no problem.)

See the best antivirus for domestic use as per me is Avast 4.8 Professional or the Home Edition. Its not exactly free, but you can find its key easily and besides its key is not blocked, so you can update regularly.
Although the protection is basic, its quite useful for domestic use, and pretty satisfactory with freeware tag.
Enjoy it!

Most people will tell you that avast is the best free or even the best antivirus ever so you cant miss if you use it. I prefer norton but who knows which one is the best. But you can always find a working antivirus that is ubdatable just read the comments and instructions of torrents.

Currently I'm using AVG free eddition. And I couldn't be happier. Unlike other anti-virous programs AVG doesn't clog up my computer's resources and actually keeps it performing to its maxum. and yes, its free. Believe me I can't afford to pay for anti-virous even if the payment is anual.
