Is Youtube a teaching tool now?

How many of you have had teachers, or know of teachers that use Youtube in the classroom?
I am in [community] college now, and even when I was in high school I had teachers that liked to show Youtube videos in class. I think it can be a great thing- there are tons of clips from educational videos and documentaries on there, but sometimes it can go too far.
Last semester, I took a music appreciation class. Nearly ever day, the teacher showed Youtube videos; she thought our book wasn't enough, and that most of the class wasn't understanding from just that material. She thought "demos" of musical styles and instruments would help. For a xylophone "demo," she ended up showing these teenage boys playing the super mario theme in a basement. I thought the video it self was pretty dumb, and showing it in class was unnecessary. I guess it really depends on the teacher themselves to use Youtube as a good tool or a bad tool for teaching.

I am into the class that use Youtube videos which made by our teacher themselves or being downloaded from the Internet,an immense mine of teaching tools.Students wouldn't be able to catch the knowledge well if only concentrate on the text books but not use extra imformation to expense their horizon.

We have had teachers use YouTube in class in the past. However, it was blocked, because of the certain content posted on YouTube at our school. Teachers now use a site called TeacherTube; which is similar, but occasionally a teacher will use a proxy and get some good educational videos or comical videos from YouTube. It's always good to try different styles of teaching and using technology seems to work well for the current generation.

It has become so popular now, my brother is always coming home and telling me what the teacher showed him on youtube. I some cases it has helped with his learning and was relevant to the lesson, but in many cases, what he said seemed to me like the teacher was just wasting time

I had an English teacher who used you tube. He would call it a commecial break and show us a you tube clip dealing with the improper use of grammar. I liked watching these commercial breaks because it gave us a chance to rest our brain and to think about what was being taught. I think if one is careful as to what is being seen on you tube, you tube can be a great educational tool.

I learned how to suture from Youtube. I practiced on pigs feet, and bananas until I perfected it. I used the info to augment my medic skills in the field. They have a lot of great medical topics & surgeries you can watch if that's your thing.

I'm actually taking personal lessons from the site, Youtube, from tutorials to fixing things to learning new languages. There are really good and useful videos there, which I find very educational. It's easier to do things when its demonstrated rather than just the text type instructions. I think that using some videos for class purposes is a good idea, but like you said there are some videos only for amusement and not necessarily educational.

there are a lot of video on youtube that teaches anything and something. i myself sometimes watch some interesting videos there. but of course they need to make sure that the video the teachers will be showing their students is something that the students can learn from. but for my perception using video is somehow lazy for me. i mean teacher are their to educate us if we can find it already on youtube then what is their use? its easy to find video on youtube we dont need a teacher to do that. just my opinion.

I've rarely had a teacher take us to YouTube and show us a video. But I go to film school so it kinda makes sense. I had an audio teacher who showed us a cool video on youtube with the "Ruben's Tube" experiment (Flames that create a visual sound wave, I don't know all the specifics but it was pretty awesome looking). I don't think showing videos with two guys playing a xylophone is enough to get the idea of a xylophone. It really depends on the teacher, like you said.

Yes, even i learning the body building dumpbells steps from youtube. Well for students learning, i wont suggest that. Internet has its own good and bad. So we can have video type of learning system as that would be best approach for students understanding. But particularly through youtube , anyways again taking the good of it will benefit the students education.
