I don’t like the chat thingers! When I’m on Facebook I am usually offline. I forgot to go offline once and my aunty came on to talk to me and just wouldn’t go away. I was trying to message someone else and she kept popping up talking nonsense and I felt it rude not to reply. I was chatting to her for almost an hour! I tell you I will never forget to go offline ever again!

hi paula,
that's my case too. it's really hard to be chatting with lots of people you will not have a focus or you might be typing at the wrong box. when i chat i want some focus. at least with YM you can choose whom i want to see me online that i can chat.

I find this really annoying. Yahoo mail asked if I wanted the chat feature, I ticked no and it was still downloaded, I didn't want it and don't use it. If I want to chat I use Messenger. A blogging site I joined automatically put a chat feature on, I wanted to use it to blog, not chat. I don't see the point of having these
chat features everywhere. I hope MyLot never automatically install a chat feature.

IF they do, I hope they make it really easy for people to turn it OFF!
Sometimes I like chatting, it's easier to have a conversation in real time. But only when I want to...

Let me see..
I have accounts in Friendster, Multiply, Facebook, Tagged and of course MSN. I rarely use all of them now except for Facebook.. and Multiply, I still log in from time to time. I have friends there whom I cherish.. and I love the concept. And not forgetting your Multiply..it's an awesome blog you have there.
Facebook is only for games and for me to scribble on the walls sometimes.. it's fun. Like Twittering.. oh yeah, and I'm on Twitter too.. it's fun and it's easy, although it might be foolish.. it's still fun for me.

Facebook is the only site I use, and the chat feature can be handy. However, it can also be annoying because sometimes I just hop on there quick to check something and here someone sees I'm on so I feel obligated to continue chatting with them. It's nice when I'm talking to a friend who lives far away and can catch up with them. I like chatting online in general, just not when I don't have the time. Sometimes, depending on the person, I might ignore their initial chat message, but most of the time I'll at least say "hi" to them even if I have to get off quick. I know that probably sounds mean, but it all depends on what I'm doing and what I got on Facebook to check. Generally, it's a nice feature to have. Seems like everyone is getting that function on their sites. Thanks for asking!

That's probably the best way to do it because then the person you're talking too doesn't feel like you're getting off just because the got on or something. Most close friends, family, and people I know realize that I live a very crazy busy life so most of them would understand why I hop on and hop off so fast. That's the way things go!

i only have facebook right now. but i always get to hide or offline when i log in to the site. i don't want friends to see me but i go online if i want to chat with someone and if it is only important. i seldom go to facebook though.

I am a member to the main social networking sites. The main social network site that I use is Facebook. I have become less and less attached to it everyday, because of it's new updates to the layout. I do use the chat when I want to chat privately, but not have to send a private message. I usually put myself online unless I am in a bad mood. I think the option to hide yourself is an excellent feature, because you want to be able to toggle your visibility, but don't want it too complicated or permanent.

No if it was too complicated, hardly anybody would use it!

I don't go there often enough or use enough features to be bugged by it.

I am not necessarily saying it is too complicated, but all the updates are hard to keep up with. I am bugged by the style of Facebook now. A few years ago I felt it operated smoother, quicker, and was more appealing to the eye. Do you feel this too?

Hi Dawn,
When i haven't checked on the option button on facebook to go offline, i am always online with friends. it's embaraasing when someone started sending you messages and you are not responding as you just want to check on your facebook updates. i've been a member for almost two years in facebook but it was only this first quarter of 2010 that i became active on it. if i want to chat with friends i use my ym or email chat.

But alas! All my chatting day is over. So, I just post silly discussions and comments on social networking sites. And even in those I remain anonymous, as I don't have personal control of my time.
Just like now at work, my boss keeps asking me for things, making it impossible for me to concentrate in myLotting.

as long as you're anonymous, maybe you should anonymously introduce your boss to myLot...

yea i like the facebook chat mainly, i use facebook a lot and facebook has got almost 1/4 part of world population there so its nie to chat with people on facebook.
the ning is a nice website who allow users to create a free social network, but i don't think it can be compared with facebook. because facebook is social network site and ning is a site where we create social network.
I like the idea to i have got to add chat feature on my blogspot blog so that visitors can chat with eachother.

More and more sites do add in the Chat feature. The first site I saw adding that feature was MySpace but they discontinued it. Im not sure if they've picked it up again these days. Its been a while since I opened my account there.
Well, I do use them only when I have to. Facebook's chat feature is a drag. I mean it's slow and just slows loading on other pages. I dont send IM's to friends but I do reply to those who sends me one. I still prefer to use Yahoo Messenger and if I sense that a Facebook chat conversation with someone is going to be a long one, then I invite him/her over to YM so that we could have a smoother conversation.
That's just me anyways.^_^

I used to use the chat feature on Facebook. But then I realized that people could see if I was online or not . . . I didn't like that! Certain "friends" would pop on the screen as soon as I logged on and it got real annoying. I only have X amount of time to be online - and I didn't feel like having a chat with them (sorry, they're my friends, but I like to be on or off line as I please). So now I keep it permanently OFF . . . I don't want to be found!

I've only been found twice. If it gets annoying I'll switch it off too!

Generally speaking, I don't use them. Facebook's chat just locks up on my old computer. I prefer to use Yahoo! messenger if I am using one at all. Otherwise I sign into Meebo.com and run all the messengers and chat handles out of one browser. It's much faster and I don't have to carry and run all that software. It's a win-win.
