50's 50 style table - Icecream soda's anyone? lol

........that can make or break a day's enjoyment. Today, I'm in seventh heaven. It's the hubs birthday soon and he and I are into all things retro, I had ordered, quite some time ago, a retro style table for our kitchen. IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE! I opened the package, took a look at the instructions for putting the legs on and thought "Well it's a good thing it's a woman putting it together, because these instructions are useless!" lol Took me ten minutes and an allen key, and voila! Pic attached. The pic is from the net, but the table is exactly the same and so are my chairs, which are black instead of blue, but you get the idea. I'm absolutely thrilled with it, and I know the hubs is going to be over the moon and literally gobsmacked when he sees it. He had no idea it was coming. It might be a little sticky explaining where I got the money, lol, but I'm counting on him being too happy with it to threaten to cut off my credit card! LOL And anyway, I got a real deal on it right? Of course I did! So when was the last time you surprised your better half, or anyone else with a gift that left them speechless.........and what was the gift cause I need ideas for our wedding anniversary which is coming up soon!

Which anniversary is it? The last time I surprised Hubby was 5 years ago when we gave him a surprise birthday party, people came from all over to attend this and he didn't have a clue. It was his 70th.

I remember using one of those as a youngster in one of the first restaurants I worked in. Made the most awesome shakes, too. The owner kept telling me that I put too much ice cream in it, so it cost too much, so I just waited till he wasn't looking and people would flock there to get my shakes so thick your spoon would stand in it.

Considering your retro table and chairs I think the perfect thing to go with it is an old ice cream shake maker. I don't know where that idea came from but it was the first thing that entered my head.

If you get any good ideas let me know! My husbands birthday is in 13 days and I have NO IDEA what to get him. I never do. He doesn't like to celebrate his birthdays and doesn't want a big deal made out of it. I usually just cook him one of his favorite dinners and we go see a movie or something. I surprised him with Jeff Dunham tickets for Christmas but that has been the only time in almost 4 years that he didn't figure out or flat out tell me what to get him as a gift.

I wouldn't like them for my house. I prefer wood, you know that. You are more adventurous than I am, for sure. Surprizes, I've done quite a few. The first time I organized a birthday party for my hubby, because over 50 ppl showed up, and he said he DID NOT want a party. But he had a blast!

Actually Annie, a retro set of table and chairs would look perfect in your kitchen. They are not all round you know. But yeah, I am more adventerous than you. LOL Hard to believe..............As for your hubs. He can make a party and have a blast all by himself don't you know! ROFL (ok, you can slap me upside the head now!)

long long time ago.. my friend shayla had been eyeballing this really beautiful faery doll in the store.. and decided that she just coulodnt afford to spend that sort of money on something so very frivolous. after wed left and shed gone home from our little shopping trip, i ran back to the store, and grabbed the doll. her birthday is day after xmas and shes always always getting gipped on her birthday. it was at that time.. may LOL she ,later called me up, said shed gone back to the store to get the doll, but it was gone and she was sooo sad. i attempted to comfort her all the while keeping the secret of the doll being neatly and safely tucked up into my closet. the months passed.. xmas day rolled around and i gave her the xmas gift id bought. cant remember what it was now.. a set of hand weights i think.. its irrelavent.. then i pulled out another box.. wrapped in pretty birthday paper all done up in bow, and told her happy birthday. hehe was she speachless? no.. but you couldnt understand a damned word she said through all the crying and blubbering that went on LOL i LOVE surprising people like that *giggles* this doesnt exactly help you figger out an anniversary gift unless yer hubs like faeries.. but its a cute story nonetheless and i felt like sharing it with you =oP happy birthday to the man, early anniversary grats, and loves all over you

I like it... definitely 50's... the blue and white makes it seem like it would make for an excellent seaside patio or dining room theme, and would fit well and fine with the scenery out here. I don't know if that's my specific style, but I have always been fond of old, antique or thrift store furniture and decoration. I used to hit one up every week, if not more, to find little knick knacks or get a steal on some amazing piece of furniture that you'd never see anywhere else. I always liked wooden, earthy things, or kind of tribal and tropical stuff, and if I ever saw wooden carved animals or statues I would buy them immediately. lol my apartments always had to look like a sophisticated Japanese witch doctor lived there. Nowadays, it's bare bones minimalism, but if I get settled into a place again, I will definitely express myself by thematically beautifying my surroundings like you are.

Hello T, and welcome to my friend's list! Hope to see a lot of you! For years before I married my current hubs (5 years ago now) I lived for thrift shops, auctions, garage sales and the like. They were treasure troves of all kinds of things for myself and my decorating clients. Always something unusual and wonderful to find. I miss those treasure hunting days! Never had a client whose place had to look like a sophisticated Japanese witch doctor lived there though! LOL How original!

I had my own decorating business for nearly 20 years. I miss it. We have our house up for sale right now, and when the Real Estate Broker came to take pics of the interior for the online listing, she got about three feet inside the front door looked into the open living room/kitchen space and said "Wonderful, you've had home stager here already". She had to apologize when she was told that I had done it all myself. lol I think you'd like my house. It's not all retro. It's more of a retro/updated look, not obviously 50's. My plates are china not melmac! lol My hubs and I made a conscious choice to change our regular decor when we finished renovating this house, but in my office I still have remnants of oriental touches everywhere as they make wonderful decorative accents in almost any decor. A touch of the exotic is always a pleasant surprise.

Treasure hunting... exactly. You should make a show called that, or something like that specifically for this if they haven't already. Wow, you're a professional interior decorator? That must be fun (aside from the tasteless people heh)... I used to be a hairstylist, and can no longer do my profession, but that was always something I thought I would like doing as well. I always just liked African art and Japanese culture, and it just comes out in my other likes... I think because I'm a big fan of that rap group called the Wu-Tang Clan haha I like little homey, cottage kind of looks too.

I love the table and like you I would prefer the black on the chairs that would look so much better and really make the look of the table pop. I have bought many things that surprise people. Well you for one with the music box, lol. I got my mom her first laptop which she loves and uses everyday. I got my grand-daughter her first pair of gold and diamond earrings. I bought my son-in-law a drill with the auger attachments for putting holes in the ground for planting or fence poles. My daughter-in-law got a beautiful ring with a green gemstone in it as she loves green anything...it was an antique setting and absolutely beautiful...for her birthday. I built a room onto the house where the back porch use to be for my husband to have a nice smoking room...I got him a really nice glider rocker with a foot stool(he had been wanting one of these for quite a few years) the one I got from an older man and I looked online to get one to match it and they cost over $300. so needless to say he only has one in his room...lol. I just got my youngest son a recliner rocker and several things for his new place. I got my grandson for his birthday a membership to builders club for things he can make...it came with a few tools and will come with all that is needed every month for each project. I got a similar thing for my grand-daughter but it is crafts that she can do. I think that is enough for now. lol Have a wonderful Anniversary dear...

You are the best gift giver in the world Moonbeam. I still get a thrill every time I look at my music box. I finally had to stop playing it so often though cause the tune kept running around my head and distracting me! lol Now I just play it in the morning after my shower while I'm getting dressed so I start the day with a smile, or sometimes when I just need a lift! My own black chairs sure do make the table pop. In fact the whole ensemble makes the entire kitchen pop now. I have some pics and will send them to you when I get off my lazy butt and transfer them to my computer. Hugs and much love sweets.

Very nice, Sparx. I like that table!! A lot! As for gifts that left my now-ex speechless, there weren't any. He never appreciated much of anything I ever gave him. But, there was one gift that I gave him, I think for his birthday one year, that he not only liked, but he still uses to this day, some 25+ years later and that is a locking toolbox on wheels. His brother kept helping himself to his tools and then claiming they were his, not my ex's. When the tools he helped himself to and claimed had my DAD'S name etched into them, it was a little hard for him to explain! So, I ordered the lockable toolbox so that when he wasn't in his workshop, he could keep his tools locked up. I have to assume it was a gift well-appreciated for him to still be using it to this day.

What a great idea Jerz! After we get moved and the hubs can stop working in the oilfields, he wants to get his reno business going again, and something like this is just perfect. I'll get it for him for father's day when he'll be ready to use it. He won't see this coming either, as it's related to tools and I'm just a girl right? LOL Thanks for the great idea!

I love your new table and chairs! I really like that retro style, in fact I have the perfect area in my house that would suit that table...Uhmmm. I better not! (LOL)! The last time we bought something, secretly put it together in the dark was when we bought our daughter a cubby which, as you can imagine she absolutely loved! We had to wait until she was asleep so we could set it up in the porch. The following morning I kept finding excuses why the blinds were drawn as I was waiting for my husband to get up so he too could see the joy in her little face! Hope hubby loved the new table and chairs, mad if he didn’t!

My chairs are black with white piping and studwork around the edge on the back. The padding is thicker too which makes them heaven to sit in. The hubs won't be home for another two weeks, so I don't have to keep the blinds down. lol But it's going to be hard not to tell him one of the times he calls me which is about a dozen times a day! That is so cool!!! I hope your hubs is as thrilled with it as you are. I haven't been able to surprise mine with anything because, if he wants anything, he buys it. However, I am about to surprise his niece who is getting married on May 1st with a gift she won't see coming. And this gift is coming from WalMart of all places! I was in there earlier this week at the photo center and noticed a really cool display. They have differently shaped glass, inside of which a photo is etched, right in the middle! One of them is actually 3-D which totally floored me. Anyway, they have a heart-shaped piece of glass that sits on top of a lighted base which highlights the etched photo. I've picked that out and found the perfect picture of my husband's niece and her fiance and have sent it in to be etched. These things are absolutely gorgeous! I wanted to get them something they'd have forever (assuming the marriage lasts that long and it should since they've already been together for six years and are still deeply in love). She has her "wish lists" from a few stores but everything she had picked is so ordinary: dinnerware, flatware, serving set, stuff like that. I hope she'll cherish this gift forever. I know that if I received a gift like that, it would have me in tears. You think your hubs would appreciate something like that?

Oh sweets, this is a great idea! They just built a brand new state of the art WalMart in Regina that is to die for! lol I've been in it, but not the photo shop, and you betcha I'll be checking it out the next time I'm in the city. What a wonderful gift, and I agree that something like this will be much more appreciated and a real surprise than the same old, same old from the bride's list. Thanks so much for the info. Hugs.

We;ve had our black chairs for some time and they are fabulously comfy and I adore them. Getting the table to match them was such a treat. The table brings out the chrome in the legs of the chairs and the white piping around them and they look brand new again against the table. Can you tell I'm thrilled? LOL
