Whenever I see white onion in the market, I buy it. People say it is good for health moreso for jaundice patients. When my family members got jaundice, I gave white onion dishes to them. Do you get white onion in your place? Do you use it in your cooking and eat it?

Oh gosh, Buchi! I have made a big mistake again. I find this is the right topic which I actually looking for. But I had written another comment on the other topic "Is white onion better than regular onion?? just now. what a careless to see the words "white onions" only, and never make sense of the content of the discussion. Yeah, I have to get to the point now. From the previous discussion as well as from the result I have mylotting on web. I understand that white onion is good for health, moreover all the family members love to eat it as well. Therefore there is always stock in our kitchen. It's always yummy no matter we stir fry, prepare stew, etc.White onions and red onions are very common in my place. And we can get them from the market at any time conveniently Take care and have a nice day

Thank you my dear, for giving a very good excuse to me to forgive myself. You are really caring and considerate I feel relaxed now After knowing that white onion is a healthy vegetable that is good for healing jaundice we are happy to take both the white and red to prepare dishes. They are sold in same price here as well.

This happens many times to many people. Our mind guesses some word and automatically reads a particular word that way like reading chia as china. It is good you get white onions throughout the year. You can enjoy eating both red and white onion always.

I love white onions for my salads. White onions are better than red ones when eaten raw because they are somewhat sweet. But for cooking I prefer the red onions because they are adding more flavor to my food. One disadvantage I saw with white onion is they get spoiled easily unlike red onions that last longer. This is the reason why whenever I buy white onions I makes sure it is just enough for my immediate needs.

But one thing salonga and vandana7, though white onion's skin looks black when starts getting spoilt, the inside stuff is not spoilt soon. You can check it and then throw it.

I likes and uses white onions for garnishing my fried chicken and salads. White onions tastes sweet when eaten raw but the only problem is, it can easily gone rotten if kept too long. So, whenever i want to buy white onions, i will just buy enough for one session cooking use only. As for other time cooking, i prefer to use red onions because they makes my food more delicious. Besides that, red onion can last longer and cheaper in price in my country.

Hi Buchi, how are you doing? Happy new year. :) Well, I really love the red, or pink onions. I like that strong taste that runs up my nose and creates burning sensation. :) The only problem is the smell. :( So I eat it when I am likely to have something that can cover up that smell. White onions dont have much for skin, do they? Must be getting more by weight for money. :) I was not aware of their medicinal properties. I tended to opt for pink ones because of taste. But... they taste a bit sweet. :( I dont really like my vegetables tasting sweet!

White onions add sweet taste to salads. Further the white colour also adds beauty to the dish for garnishing. I agree it does not have much skin but for tomato, onion gojju, this mingles well with tomato and green chilli.

hi,Buchi,I don;t know authentic knowledge on red and white onion.....but i share something from another source.... The red onion requires less cooking than its white cousin. Indeed, it is perfectly acceptable served raw and is delicious in salads. The colour derives from chemicals called anthocyanins, which are chemical indicators of acidity - if you want your red onions to remain red, make sure they are served in a dish with vinegar or lemon juice. http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071129083819AAyGaiq Have a nice day.

Thanks Baluyadavji for the detailed reply. This is the reply I expected from an Agricultural Officer. Yes onion served with vinegar, does not change it's colour and vinegar adds some sour taste to the onion. In hotels they serve that way.

Hai umadper, how are you? Yes red onion is very spicy and hot whereas white onion is a bit sweet. So white onion is suitable for salads. When I cook menthi leaves, I use white onion as the sweetness will subside the bitter taste.

White onions are really cool when stir fried and my mother uses it for making salads. The salad is made of cucumber, tomato, white onion, olives, mozzarella cheese dumplings, olive oil! Wow! Sounds tasty!

In my country they sell much white onion than red one. We use only the white one for cooking meals. We use it also much for salads, but for salads also we can use the red onion. We use the red one almost only in salads, so we call it *salad onion*

I am not sure what kind of onions my husband uses when cooking, but they are all good. The way I see it, if they are vegetables, and thus a part of the fruit and vegetable food group, they are good for one's health.

I have heard a lot of good feedbacks on white onions, but I don't usually use them because they are not really abundant in our place. What is readily available are the red onions that can be seen anywhere.

Even I cannot use white onion regularly in my cooking as we will not get them regularly in my place. May be it is available in big markets. But I cannot go to those far off places often. Whenever I get, I buy more and use it for long. The advantage of white onion is that, even if the skin becomes dark, inside it is fresh, unlike red onion.

I have heard and read that all onion family is good for your health. I´m very glad because I don´t eat mainly because food is good for my health, but because I like it. But I also think that if you care to listen to your body, you will eat healthy. I love onions, bunch onions, chives, you name it. I wouldn´t know how to cook without onions and garlic. My favorite cousin comes for diner every Friday and says that onions don´t agree with him. I think he´s just picky so I disguise them. How are you going to make a stew or caserole without onions? Until now, he has not been sick. After diner, while I´m serving him his second helping of dessert, I usually confess so I can go to bed with a clear concience.. My grandchildren have learned to love a well made meal, onions and all, since they were toddlers. They will not be fat adults as they have learned how to eat.

That is so nice of you to have brought up your grand children by making them eat the good vegetables from childhood. Onion is very good for health in so many ways. It even reduces the faulty fat and is good for digestion.

Very well said. White onion is good for garnishing and people, who use vegetables for making decorations especially in functions and marriages, use white onion to make ducks, cranes etc. as they need white colour for that.
