Do you spell check your discussions?

Canada
March 18, 2010 9:37am CST
I find taht whenever I type up a discussion, response or comment I find quite a few spelling mistakes just from the typing. Maybe two letter will be switched or I hit the key next to the one I wanted and only rarely notice when Im actually typing. I never check through an I feel like some people may be offended or aggrevated by this? Are you? Do you?

I am not aggravated or offended by the mistakes that others make when typing because I do it myself too I glance quickly at what I type before i submit my post and correct the ones that I see, which I assume are the only ones, only to find that once it is posted there are a whole lot more I use two different computers and type quickly and often skip over the letters. At home they disappear though I thought that I had typed them while on the other computer from work, they become all jumbled up with no spaces. I am disappointed with myself for making them but once it's doe there is no way of repairing the damage done. We are not at school though we should be careful as everything that we post, typos included, will be seen by one and all

I personally try to ensure that I am always using the correct spelling or grammar in my messages but this does not always happen correctly of course. If I see someone who has used poor spelling or grammar then I do not find this annoying and personally I don't really understand why people get so heated about the whole thing. As long as you can read the message what is the problem really?

Obviously its annoying sometimes and you just cant help but show it through your frustration and comments back in mylot and other forms of mediums or media. But I agree, as long as you understand what the peson is trying to come across then its fine. Sometimes you cat be too careful though because I know of some people (my firends and such) who find it almost insulting. As if you dont care enough to check.

i have enabled spell check in my browser, so it's very rare that i make errors when typing, if i type with mistakes, it will show the word with an underline , so i will correct it.. i always wanted to type it correctly because others should find it very easy to read and understand my context ..

Spellchecker in a browser seems to be a favorite among mylotters and I can understand why. It simple, I beleive free, and helps A LOT. I want people to be able to understand what Im saying which is why I dont shorthand words (such as ppl instead of people) and I try to spell correctly but for the most part its not that big of a deal to me as long as my fellow mylottters can understand what Im saying.

I tend to be really OC about my spelling (I change misspellings immediately as I see them) so I don't feel the need for spell check. Besides, once the red squiggly lines appear, I edit the misspelled word right away. Now grammar checking is another issue. I need one sometimes because I fumble on some of the simplest subject-verb agreements. (laughs)

hi artsyfartsygypsy, i couldn't have agreed with you more. typing errors might not be that bad you might say, unless it's real bad. but by accidentally omitting a word may create an entirely new idea or meaning which can equally spell unpleasant results.

Yeah, and sometimes I find myself actually trying to decode what peopel say and it just kind of ruins the whole flow of the discussion in my mind. Unpleasent results are not the gaol here on mylot and that is sadly what is created. I think we should all work toward fixing this, but of coursemost wont. I know I dont like the idea of spending that extra time checking over my work if I think it's okay. I might pass a quick glance but nothing serious. Happy myloting. :)

Typos seem to be quite common so dont worry about it. lol and I see that you use the all powerful 'lol' just as I do. I also use smilies. :) I find they add a little something and a personal touch to the conversation. Although some dont make sense. I mean jsyk!? Just so you know. Is it really taht difficult to write? And those are the ones that people just decide to make up so their lives are just that much easier. I mean, I understand that some people arnt familiar with lol or lmao or others similar but dont just make some up or use uncommon ones to even the youth today outside you and your friends.

Hi, I make mistakes all the time. I type fast from working in an office for years & often hit the wrong key. I also get absorbed in what I am trying to say so often speed read my final submission & often still miss the mistakes!!! It's just one of them!! Most people it doesn't bother as you often only read the 1st & last letter of the word so you don't always pick up on mistakes or automatically recognise what the word should have been. My favorite mistake seems to be hitting the caps lock by accident, which is frustrating!! Have fun MrsL x x

I know exactly what you mean. I often do teh same thing and because of teh same reason. Quck typing from years of practice that ay. And in the officve I worked in the programs I used (one being Microsoft word) often enough autocorrected my word as I typed so I wouldnt notice or it wouldnt matter as it was done for me either way. The caps lock mistake is one I have encountered many a time and it is quite annoying. I just did it in a matter of act. That is one of those mistakes I cant just leave for the people to itepret because in my mind it is used to start a sentace ior emphasize everythign AND WHY WOULD I WANT THIS EMPHASIZED? Okay, actually it kind of worked in that situation. lol. Since our brains do that and we thereofre dont notice it really as we write, type or re-read, others can and usually will notice and some even make comments about it (thats the real stickller in my opinion). Or what if you dont know teh word in your vocabularly or you speak a different language mainly, then what? Then you get pretty confused in my opinion. Happy mylotting. :)

Hi artsyfartsgypsy, I do made typing error while I am here. But since mylot has spelling checker I will notice it by just look at the red line below the word. Sometimes it does not help because the word is right but the meaning is different and it can spoil the sentence. I rarely double check my post before posting it. Since my English is not as good as many people here, I rely much on spelling checker to identify any wrong spelling here.

I never check my spelling or grammar on here once I've finished typing in my discussion or response. Although, I am sure that maybe every once and awhile that there is a mistake that I have made. I don't become aggrivated by those who made the mistakes in their discussion. I'm quite fine with it, just as long as I can understand what they are trying to say.

When I typed wrongly, we will be prompted with the red curved line so I will go back and amend my words. I don't think I will feel offended or anything but sometimes, it might caused me so frustration if I don't really understand what is the post about especially when I am in the mood to reply.

Yeah, it defiantly gives you a bad feel when your in the mood tio reply and I find its even worse when Im not in the mood for crap and cant understand. I get frustrated and give up on that response, comment or discussion. It sucks but thats the sad truth of it for me. I usually go back and just lightly check my words but really I dont often. And then of course we have the grammer messing us up (there, their, they're) etc. Haha, those really mess some people up.

I think all we need here is understanding each other. language is about knowing each other, understanding what someone's means with their words. if we have understood about it, I think misspelling wouldn't be problem anymore. sure correct spelling is important, but maybe we just don't have enough time to check and recheck our mistyping.

Since I hardly have the time to do this, I seldom check the spelling of my work. I do hope that I did not do any major mistake so far.

Yes i do. I check my spell and then correct it. But i don't mistake usually.lol. Well when i type any word then i don't read it again before post it. I just submit it that's whenever i notice any mistake i just correct it on that time.

Sometimes when I am not in a hurry to respond, I really check my spelling but when I'm in a hurry to respond, I don't care anymore if I accidentally misspell words. This is not offending or aggravating anyway.

hi artsyfartsygypsy no I am not offended as even with firefox spell checker I still miss some of my own errors. oh I am human as anyone else and do make my share of errors to sad but true.We all need to be more tolerant of each other as none of us are really perfect at least I do not think so.he he.

I am not offended if anyone makes mistakes, as I make plenty of them myself. When it comes to proof reading my posts first, I don't do it like I should. When I do make any mistakes though, I will get a red line under the misspelled word, and then I go back and correct any of the misspelled words. I feel that as long as I can read my posts and anyone elses even with the misspelled words then it really doesn't matter all that much, and I am not sure we get penalized for making mistakes anyway. I mut enjoy my time so much in here that I hope to continue posting here for a very long time. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

When I'm at my regular nine to five, and I start out the discussion from there, I usually write it on Word first. That takes care of any spelling issues that I might have. I just then copy and paste on myLot when I'm ready. I don't feel offended if I see any spelling mistakes by others though. In my responses where I type in directly is where I also make a few mistakes here and there.

Writing it on Microsoft Word first seems like a really good idea and is probally one of the most efficent way to do a spell check on your mylot. Howver, Im not sure if I personally would because of teh time constraints and teh fact that Im fairly lazy. Plus the point that I dont think it matters enough here on mylot (of my spelling and grammer) for me to take the time to do that. We cant copy and paste either so Id be typing twice as much, again, not worth my vital and precious time.
