Many families are cutting back on where they will be traveling for the Spring Break and the summer. We did a staycation last year in which we stayed in the US and did a camping trip week. It was so amazing and fun. We actualy want to do it again this year! There are so many neat places in the US to see. We're thinkin go f a Yellowstone trip or a trip to D.C. There are many wonderful things to see right here in our own state that we haven't as a family seen yet.
What about you? Will you go abroad or stay closer to home? What do you have in your state that tourists should visit? (Include those great Mom and Pop restaraunts! They are the best!!)
Thanks and happy SAFE travels!

Yes, I will be going to Brisbane this coming May for a 3 months vacation. I am looking forward to this long holiday and hope to tour Australia with my sister who is staying there. My country is such a beautiful country with nice beaches great tourist spot like having the highest mountain in south east Asia and one of the best scuba diving spot in the world. But I haven't gone around the whole country yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to see my country more in near future.

Great response! I can almost see it in my mind! Have you been to the scuba spot? I've never gone myself. Not sure I would get the breathing part right adn affraid I'd snorkle some sea water right up my nose!
We have some friends in Australia... would be a wonderful place to go see!

hi bearballew As for myself, living here in Gold crest retirement center is a vacation all the times as you are waited on, but you know what thats boring I may be elderly but I am used to doing for myself. For those wishing to vacation in my state California ,why not go to Yosemite State Park, its a gorgeous place and you will enjoy your time there. also why not go down to NewPOrt beach and stroll along the Pacific, ting the best frozen Chocolate covered bananas. then go to Charlies Chili a small but well known old cafe for the best Chili anywhere. Also there is the SanDiego zoo, and Marine Land, Ca has verything, just visit the beach at Newport and stroll along enjoying the ocean and the sea shells and just relaxing. also go see the nuclear power plant at 'San onofre too. I imagine there are also places I have forgotten.Visit Capistrano as the swallows are due to come back again this March. thats a great place full of history. happy vacationing wherever you decide to go.

Thanks Hatley! I'd come visit YOU too on my road trip! Look through your family albums. I can learn so much from others.
I've beento some of those places you mentioned, but when I was much younger. I don't remember them, only their names.
Blummus,
I've never been to Sacramento. Sounds nice and relaxing. I was a Tahoe as a kid on a family trip... don't remember much... maybe it's time to go back!
ROAD TRIP!

Oh, I wish i could travel again. Even had made plans to leave in March and go to several places and meet people. But, things didn't work out so I don't have the money or the capacity to travel. I may take a short trip to a mountain resort town near by. And probably not.

We aren't going abroad but we are either going to have a staycation this year or a trip that we've always dreamed about. We just got an offer on our house and are in escrow. If all goes well, at the end of April, we'll pack up and drive the coast from California to Washington state. We're going to spend May and June at a house on the beach in Oregon since our condo won't be ready until July. The Oregon coast is a fabulous trip. I live in Southern California and there are tons of things to see and do here, starting with great beaches, Disneyland, Universal Studios etc. I think that every state has a tremendous amount of things to see and do but we never appreciate the things that we have in our own back yard. DH and I made a trip to Hawaii a couple of years ago and one of the places that we visited was Pearl Harbor. While waiting in line we struck up a conversation with a woman who was born and raised in Hawaii and this was her first trip to Pearl. She went to college on the mainland and just returned to Hawaii to live that year. That struck a cord with me. When we got home, I made a list of all of the things that people travel from all over the world to see in my home state and I went about visiting all of them. I'll leave California with no regrets. Take care.

I totally agree with you, there a lot of great things to do very close to you, I live in New York City, and there is always something different to do here. However, whenever I can I go to visit my family which lives out of the country, but these days with the economy state, I wouldn't be traveling that much if it wouldn't be because it is my family. These days we all have to cut back in all expenses, because we don't know what may happen tomorrow.

I am taking "around town" trips, meaning I only go to places around my area, and be it that I live in California, it is not that hard to do.

I haven't taken a big vacation in years. In fact my vacation involves doing something for a day and nothing more. I really don't have anything in mind this year. I'd love to take a trip to the beach or something for a few days. Anything to get away for a few days. I suddenly understand why people would want to go someone else for a few days after working for months on end. I never really understood why people would want to leave for so long but now I do but I still haven't planned anything. I may consider doing something later but right now no plans.

We always do a staycation. I think we are getting famous for them. Most of the time we don't even leave our town!

I'm a bit biased in my response, in that I've only been living in my present location for about 6 years. To me, a Staycation is the opportunity to explore and learn about the area I now live in.
However, even from my former home, a lot could be done. In a 150 mile radius, for most of us there are interesting things to see and do. Certainly the savings on airfare or hotels would go for a lot of entertainment. Even opting for an overnight stay in a neighboring city offers sports, music, educational and art venues to please just about any taste.
Here in Oklahoma there are lots of different ecological areas, from plains and prairie to mountains, desert and wetlands. There are tons of historical museums to explore. Even though Oklahoma has been a state for only about 100 years, it was the ending of the 'Trail of Tears', when many Indian Tribes were relocated here to make room for increasing numbers of east coast settlers. If nightlife is the thing, then there are many casinos, which have lots of entertainment in addition to gambling.

If it can even be considered a staycation, that is what we've done this year. We are very tight on money and that does have a tendency to make a difference. In addition to this, my husband has also been very busy at work and also dealing with his medical difficulties that we haven't been able to get away from home. We just took the summer for swimming and things like that and really didn't do anything special except for a few little family outings. I hope that we will be able to do more next year when the kids are a bit older.

We are planning a trip to Walt Disney land this year. Our first distant vacation. My oldest is 14 and youngest is 5 so I want to go before the 14 yr old is too old. Can you be too old for Disney land though..lol.
DC sounds fun. Do you normally go outside the US?

I was thinking you meant stay totally at home on vacation, which is what we did last year. This year we may not take a flying trip, but I want to go somewhere, do a little camping or something. What I'd really like to do is take the kids back east to meet the relatives back there, but I'm thinking I'd better pay off the credit cards instead.

We’ve been doing ‘staycations’ for a long time now because it has been ages since we have been able to afford to go anywhere. Our holidays are real stay at home ones! My husband has holidays each year around Christmas at the same time my daughter is on school holidays so we plan activities and fun things to do around home or on day outings. A camping trip sounds like a great idea and I may just put it to my husband this year!

We have not decided what we are doing for vacation but we usually stay in the US anyways. The only time we would travel outside of the US would be if we went on a cruise. I live in Texas and there are several things to see here. You can go to San Antonio and see the River Walk, Alamo, Sea World & Fiesta of Texas. Dallas/Fort Worth area go to Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor and even go to a Texas Rangers baseball game. Go to Galveston or Corpus Christi and see the beach.

Same here! Last year my family and I were planning on going to China, but ended up going on a staycation instead because the airfare was ridiculously high. The staycation ended up being really fun though. We went to napa and a whole bunch of little cities around there. We went water-rafting, ate delicious food, went boating, and a bunch of other stuff like that. The best thing though was that we were able to bring our dog with us and he was able to enjoy the staycation along with us. If we went to China, he would have been stuck at a friend's house missing out on wonderful bonding time. This year we are also planning on going on another staycation. We aren't sure where we want to go yet, but I'm sure we're gonna have a blast :)
