I have been avoiding shampoo this year.
It was my new years resolution.
So far I have managed it.
That doesn't mean not washing my hair ,just not using shampoo to do it.
I have really quite thin straight hair and it is usually a bit lifeless.
After reading about not shampooing, I decoded to give it a try and maybe have better hair .
So , first I tried dry shampooing it with cornflour.
This is a bit dusty but lasts about the same amount of time as ordinary shampooing.
Then I bought some bicarbonate of soda(used in cake making) and now I add it to a little bowl of water and massage it in as though it were shampoo.
It works much better than the cornflour and my hair is much bouncier, plus it only needs doing once a week.
My mother when a girl, used to wash hers with egg in rain water.
Dad always washed his with plain hot water but he did it every day before he shaved.
How do you wash your hair? Do you use shampoo or something else and how often do you need to do it?

I just wash my hair with shampoo everyday. Shampoo makes my hair dry but I can't find any alternative to it. When I don't wash my hair everyday, it becomes so oily and it feels a bit dirty sometimes. I don't like that feeling so I have to wash my hair with shampoo everyday.

The more it is washed, the oilier it gets.
You scalp produces oil to recondition your hair and then you wash it off.
The bicarbonate of soda removes dirt but lets your scalp keep some of the oils so you don't need it to keep adding more.

I am living in a tropical country so I need to wash my hair everyday. Oftentimes, I wash it twice a day. Living in a hot country can get you hair really messy that's why after traveling, I make sure I wash my hair and also my body to freshen up.

Do you use shampoo every time?
I sometimes shower after sports and just get wet rather than shampoo, don't really think of that as washing it,more a quick freshen up rinse.

My hair would look and smell awful if I did that. I know that back in the day, people washed their hair much less often. My mom was a hair dresser and she did tell me that washing it daily was not good for it. There are times when I've gone 2 days but I can't go any longer than that. When I was younger, my hair was very oily and if i didn't wash it everyday there was enough grease to fry donuts. Now that I'm older, I can get away with skipping some days but I have to at least condition it.

Still quite often.
Mum said that she and her sisters only did theirs about once every two weeks when she was a young girl.

I usually wash mine every second day because it gets quite oily. I use shampoo and what kind really depends. I think it is good to change your shampoo now and then so your hair does not get used to it. I have my hair dyed blonde so I usually use a shampoo especially for this but when it is darker I use a one for fine/thin hair to give it volume.

I have always used shampoo up till the end of last year.
I was reading about using alternatives and thought I would give it a try.
Before, I was washing it every 3rd day and it really needed it by that third day but now it is fine still on day 3 and just about needing it by the end of the week.

I always wash my hair everyday, but not shampooing it.
I use shampoo every other day...and sometimes i use lemon juice instead of shampoo.
I also use the aloe vera plants to scrub on my scalp and hair before having a bath and not using any shampoo.
It is not good to use shampoo all the time.
I also done self hot oil treatment to my hair by using fresh coconut milk.
Pouring the fresh coconut milk on my hair and gently massaging it,then cover with shower plastic cap,and a towel for at least 2 hours before rinsing or taking a bath, and use lemon juice as shampoo,a bit of honey can be add also to lemon juice to make hair bouncy and lively.
I usually do this once a month to make my hair stays shiny and smooth.
I don't go to parlor for hair treatment, for chemicals used at parlor shops may damaged to our hair.
Better use the herbal and natural herbs for caring our hair.

Oh can you use Aloe Vera too?
That is very interesting.
I think it must be alkaline.
I might have to have an experiment as I have quite a few plants of that type.

They always smell lovely don't they?
My daughter uses herbal shampoo too.
Mine was getting out of control as far as greasiness was concerned so I was looking for something less drastic.

Not very often.
Mainly as my hair is buzzed to the scalp.
Not shaven but just clipped closely.
I have had my hair like this for about 6 years straight.
I used to have really long hair. To my waist actually.
Then I'd wash twicw with shampoo then conditioner as well.
I did this almost everyday then as well.
I have used rainwater in the past and loved the feel.
As always.....

My husband has his clipped short.
Sometimes it is hardly there,he has it so closely cropped.
I think it is easier to keep short hair clean.
I had mine long at one point but I hated how if I washed my hair and then got dressed, it would be all wet down my back.

i wash my hair everyday. it is too hot here and i perspire a lot. but at my father side our hair is slowly vanishing. so i use my sond shampoo. i use mild so i can wash my hair with shampoo everyday. my wife uses shampoo every other day for she does not go out often and she does not perspire a lot like i do. good for you that you found alternative to use for your hair and it works.

My brother has lost a lot of his hair, he and my father had the same receding hairline.
If I were him ,I would have it cut very short like bruce willis .
I think being able to cut it so short must be very easy to look after, just wash your head every day really and your hair gets washed with it.
I would look very odd with such short hair though.

Bouncy hair is nice though, it at least makes your head seem the right shape.
Sometimes mine has been so thin and flat that I look like I don't have any in photographs.
IT doesn't help that it is light coloured too which never shows up well in pictures.

That is good that you are trying to get yourself off of using shampoo to wash your hair. For me, I haven't been using shampoo for a while. I think the chemicals in it react with my hair or scalp and make it all itchy. Since then I have been using the plain old white Ivory bar soap. It feels fine and really works at cleaning my head and hair and doesn't make it itchy.

Wow so you use just soap?
I guess you have worked out how to rinse it out well.
My husband find some soaps are itchy in their own right.
I think it is the amount of acidity they have.

Its still a bit nippy here weather wise so I definitely don't have a shower everyday.
People used to only have a bath once a week in the past and long ago ,hardly at all.
They did have wash basins though and they just washed the parts that needed it.
I think you are lucky to have a warm climate.

I wash my hair every day, I've been told this is very bad for my hair but I have hair that gets oily so easily it drives me mad. It has always been like that ever since I was younger. I usually use shampoo and conditioner and then every so ofter I use a leave in conditioner but not all the time.

Mine got greasy in my teens and the more it was washed, the quicker it got greasy.
I have now got it to the quite good stage of not needing to be washed more than once a week.

Shampoo does smell lovely.
I once had green apple shampoo which left me smelling like apples afterwards.
It was quite popular in the 1980s but now seems to have disappeared.

Hello Pandaeyes,
Everyone has their own way of washing their hair. Back in the old days I believe my parents wash their hair by using this one organ part from a chicken to dye and refreshes their black here. Now I'm talking back in Laos here. I myself don't shower as much back then I regret now I have bad hair and am shampooing every day. Exactually our parents force us to wash our hair, they say it's always a honor/blessing to be refreshed. My choice of brand is the pert plus and head*Shoulder but nowadays I use Neutrogena's formula shampoo. :)

You are right.
Some people oil their hair I think.
Long ago people powdered their hair.
It was a whole different world.

It is easier if you are washing all of you isnt it?
I do mine in the shower usually.
I have to take my little bowl of bicarbonate in with me but it is no trouble.
In the bath I don't like to sit with my hair wet after wards so I wrap my head in a towel as soon as I wash it.

I often wash my hair daily, it cannot be washed if
I have fever. When my hair was colored and relaxed
I did not used yet shampoo. To avoid dryness and
hardness to dry. I used only hair conditioner so that
my hair would be smooth to comb.
I already experienced after doing some hairstyles
I was already learned from it.
So I still stick to whatever conditioner to stay
my hair relax and straight too.

I use conditioner if I am going to cut my hair because it keeps it smooth and I can see if the edges are even.
That only happens about once every 3 months though.
I am far too lazy to bother with it in between.

That must get quite expensive on shampoos and conditioner but I expect it smells lovely.
I think the more we wash it, the more it battles to produce oils which is where my greasy hair problem originated.

you sound like you work quite hard to maintain your hair.
I remember women in the UK used to wear head scalves to keep their hair clean.
Back in the 30's when my mum was growing up,there was much less dirt in the air which helped prevent it getting too dirty too quickly.

Easy question for me, everyday I have kendo practice and I have to wear a head mask and a cloth underneath, and I sweat allot in it because of the hard training and heat from the mask, and not to mention my hair is long, so yes, everyday I wash my hair with gargnier fructis and then conditioner from gargnier also, my hair is hard type so I have no problem with shampoo.
Also a good advice from me is to practice something that makes you sweat allot, and then take a shower it opens your pores, makes your skin pretty and your hair hard, also eating fruits every day and vegetables, and no meat or as less as possible, fish is ok.

Thats interesting about the sweating.
I do sport nearly every day but I don't wash my hair every time.
I think you are right about the pores because my skin is much better since I started being more active.

I am washing my hair everyday and just like you I am also avoiding the shampoo. I just have the shampoo once a week. I normally used the conditioner or just plain water that's it. Sometimes they will say that my hair will be smelly however it didn't turn out like that. They even shocked that its not that smelly. So some people used the shampoo because of the smell only, I therefore conclude.

I remember a man at work who really was quite smelly.
I think he did use shampoo when he washed his hair but he hardly ever did wash it.
He said it cleaned itself and was not smelly but everyone else could smell it.
No one ever commented on it to him as far as I know.
I have asked my husband if mine was getting smelly and he says it isn't.
I think if it was, I would most likely be the last one to notice.
